Dr. McFarlane conducts research, funded by the Centers for Disease Control, on abuse during pregnancy, the effects of abuse on maternal and infant health, and the effectiveness of clinical interventions to prevent abuse. Dr. McFarlane began working on abuse during pregnancy in 1984 and has since authored seminal studies on abuse during pregnancy and its connection with low birthweight. Her research findings have been presented to congressional committees, included in the national health objectives (Healthy People 2000), and used by clinicians in the U.S. and abroad to set standards of care for pregnant women. To prevent abuse during pregnancy, Dr. McFarlane directed a national educational program that was chronicled in an award-winning video (Crime Against the Future), funded by the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, introduced by the Surgeon General, and excerpted on national news networks.
To improve access to early prenatal care for high-risk Hispanic women, Dr. McFarlane applied for a two-year grant from the Houston-based Chapter of the March of Dimes. With this funding, she designed and tested a health care-delivery model entitled "De Madres a Madres," that has been featured in TIME Magazine and excerpted on the NBC "Today" network television program. Dr. McFarlane has authored more than 50 journal articles and six nursing textbooks. Dr. McFarlane presents regularly to national and international audiences.
