Book Description

Abusive Head Trauma in Infants and Children: A Medical, Legal, and Forensic Reference addresses all aspects of abusive head trauma cases in one complete reference for clinicians, investigators, prosecutors, and social workers. The text details the application of medical science to the investigation and prosecution of abusive cases, as well as issues of long-term outcomes, developmental and educational needs, and strategies for community-based education and prevention. More than 600 clinical photographs illustrate abusive head injuries with case studies and multidisciplinary analysis, including discussions of shaken baby syndrome, shaken impact syndrome, differential diagnoses, mimics of abusive head trauma, forensic analysis, autopsies, prosecutorial issues, long-term care of survivors, and the roles of social services and law enforcement. This single-volume edition combines the best clinical writing with high-quality photographic content found in color atlases. Abusive Head Trauma Supplementary CD-ROM depicts how head injuries occur using 3-D customizable animated scenes. Detailed forensic animations make this text a necessary tool for explaining the complex biomechanics of abusive head injury to investigators, mandated reporters, judges, and jurors. This electronic reference also contains illustrated case studies that address the biomechanical, radiological, ophthalmological, medical, and pathologic findings of different mechanisms of abusive head trauma, including shaking injuries. A ready-to-use slideshow presentation, with speaker s notes, is targeted for training medical, legal, law enforcement, and social service professionals. Together, this single-volume hardbound edition and supplementary CD-ROM represent the knowledge of today s leading experts in the field. With its thoroughly researched clinical text, high-quality images, 3-D animation, and slideshow presentation, Abusive Head Trauma in Infants and Children is a wealth of knowledge and educational resources.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Although controversy on the nomenclature and mechanics of abusive head trauma continue, it remains a major cause of death and morbidity in infants. The text's authors of this text have developed a helpful guide for physicians, both those familiar and unfamiliar with the problem. Dr. Boos provides a thoughtful and cogent discussion of the evaluation for possible abusive head trauma. Dr. Sirotnak's chapter provides an extensive, well referenced, look at unusual, but important, differential diagnoses. --Kenneth W. Feldman, MD, Pediatrics, Children s Hospital and Regional Center, Seattle, Washington

The book itself is a clear reflection of the partnerships necessary to accurately identify and address the most serious inflicted injuries to infants and young children. The contributors definitively illustrate that multidisciplinary must be much more than a catchword. Knowledge, cooperation and collaboration are essential to effectively protect children. --Gus H. Kolilis, Chief, State Technical Assistance Team, Jefferson City, Missouri

Abusive Head Trauma in Infants and Children brings together in one volume the most complete treatment ever of the medical and legal issues involved in what are perhaps the most challenging prosecutions in our nation s courtrooms. Prosecutors and investigators will find it to be an essential guide to bringing the strongest possible case against the abusers of our children. --Paul Logli, President of the National District Attorneys Association, 2005-2006, Winnebago County State s Attorney, Rockford, Illinois
