Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Based on the 1992 print dictionary of the same title, this covers engineering, life sciences, mathematics, computers, medical sciences, physical sciences, and the social sciences. It is yet another example of a CD-ROM that should be left a book. Granted, there are over 350 photographs included, but there is no listing of them and users will only find them by chance. We saw a few and came across some of the 3500 spoken pronunciations out of 130,000 entries. Searching is simple enough, although Boolean operators need to be bracketed and following up on a cross reference requires two steps. Definitions are rather brief, usually only two to three lines. Bottom Line: Stick with the book. The multimedia enhancements just do not add enough to make this dictionary a worthy purchase.

From Booklist

Our review of the print version of this dictionary [RBB Ja 15 93] recommended it highly for public, academic, and high-school libraries. Now all 125,000 entries plus some new terms are available in electronic form. The same disc will run on Windows and Macintosh computers. Enhancements to the CD-ROM version include spoken pronunciation for 3,500 difficult terms and 100 new color illustrations (in addition to the 250 black-and-white illustrations that appeared in the printed work). The chronology of science from the end of the volume has been updated through 1994 and is searchable by year or by word.

The dictionary can be searched by entry terms, or the full text can be searched by keyword. It is possible to do simple keyword searches or Boolean searches using proximity operators and truncation. Every entry in the dictionary is identified by the field(s) of science in which it is used, and the CD-ROM can be searched by these fields. Under seven broad fields, subfields are listed hierarchically. Select a subfield, and all the terms in the dictionary in that subfield are listed. The Window essays that introduced fields in the dictionary and all the appendixes from the print work can also be viewed. Searching is easy, even for the novice. Unfortunately, see references are not hot linked so a second search must be done when a cross-reference is encountered. Though the audio pronunciation is a useful feature, there are thousands of difficult words (e.g., names of enzymes) for which there is neither written nor audio pronunciation. The dictionary can be accessed from within a word processor, which makes it an ideal aid for science writers and editors.

The only competitor to this product is the considerably more expensive Science Navigator [RBB Ag 95], which contains the McGraw-Hill Concise Encyclopedia of Science and Technology as well as the 105,000-word McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms. Since the Academic Press Dictionary of Science & Technology is easy to use for ready reference in its print form, the CD-ROM version may not be a high priority for many libraries. However, science libraries and scientists will appreciate the enhanced access at a price that is less than the print version. Sandy Whiteley
