Book Description

0313277389 978-0313277382 November 30, 1993 annotated edition
This detailed reference provides a complete record of Academy Award winners and nominees through 1991. All nominees in all categories are listed, and the volume includes recipients of special awards as well. Each award category begins with a short headnote that traces the development of the award and discusses significant facts about it. The award categories are divided into sections for each year. Within the listing for a particular year are the nominees for the award, related credits, and the winner of the award. Shale begins with a short historical overview of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Part I lists Academy Award winners and nominees by award categories, with sections devoted to annual awards, other awards, and discontinued categories. Part II is a chronological index of Academy Awards. Thus full information for an award can be located through either the type of award or the year. Shale concludes with appendices of academy founders, presidents, and directors of best pictures; a selected, annotated bibliography; and an index. The result is the most comprehensive record of the Academy Awards available.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Film historian Shale (English, Youngstown State Univ.) offers the most comprehensive and timely record of Academy Award winners, nominees, and honorees available. Arranged in two sections, by category and year, this well-indexed tome will become the prime source for locating not only past winners but also competitors. Additionally, film buffs will enjoy the brief category histories heading those sections, and the general introduction is a trivia trove. Users should note, however, that Shale does not provide detail other than honoree, film title, and studio on any film; this volume is essentially a quick directory to the Oscar. An excellent companion to Mason Wiley's Inside Oscar (Ballantine, 1992. rev. ed.) and Robert Osborne's 60 Years of the Oscar ( LJ 6/1/89). Highly recommended for all libraries.

From Booklist

A comprehensive record of Academy Award nominees and winners through 1992, this is a perfect complement to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' own Annual Index to Motion Picture Credits. While the latter is a yearly compilation of information on films that "opened in a commercial motion picture theater in the Los Angeles area for a consecutive run of not less than a week" (and are thus eligible for an award), The Academy Awards Index is a compilation of motion pictures actually honored by academy members through 1992.

Beginning with a brief history of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, part 1 lists nominees and winners of annual awards by category (best picture, actress, sound, etc.). After a brief history of the award, nominees are listed chronologically with winners printed in large type. "Other Awards," such as honorary Oscars and the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, are listed in a separate section, again, chronologically. "Discontinued Categories," such as "Unique and Artistic Picture" (given only once) and "Dance Direction" (given only three times) follow. Part 2 is a chronological list of Academy Awards. Each year's listings include the date and location of the awards ceremony and (except for the first year) the date the nominations were announced. As in part 1, winners are distinguished from nominees by the use of large type. Three appendixes list academy founders, academy presidents, and directors of best pictures. A bibliography "includes books published by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, books specifically about the Oscars, and those film histories, biographies, and other works that mention the Academy in a significant way." A very detailed index lists the names of all nominees and winners and other topics. An insert of black-and-white photographs consists largely of movie stills and pictures of awards ceremonies.

For large public libraries, academic libraries, and special libraries devoted to film history, this is an important and useful purchase.
