5.0 out of 5 stars Well documented and extremely informative!, June 12, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acai: An Extraordinary Antioxidant-Rich Palm Fruit from the Amazon (Paperback)
A few months ago, I went to a "Tasting" of a juice drink called Mona Vie. Its centerpiece is the Acai berry from the Brazilian rainforest. I signed up as a "distributor" for Mona Vie (a multi-level marketing program) and started drinking the juice. Why not give something a try that has been touted as "the world's #1 SuperFood" on Oprah, selected as the official drink of the Boston Red Sox, and documented as the highest anti-oxidant food? Well, I discovered that it does in fact work! Mona Vie is in my book "a miracle food" and it can all be traced back to the Acai berry and, just as importantly, to the way it is processed by Mona Vie -- freeze dried soon after it is harvested and then reconstituted not with water but with the juice of 18 other nutrient rich fruits. In 3 months, I have lost 26 pounds, lowed my cholesterol by 21 points, increased my energy level enormously, and generally feel like a 40 year old (not someone 73).
Now, I'm trying to find out WHY Mona Vie works as well as it does. Dr. Schauss is the world's top expert on Acai and this book explains in detail just what the berry is, and what it does. If you are interested in improving your health, I strongly suggest to get ahold of this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for discovering more about the potent health benefits of Acai, June 8, 2010

Alex Schauss is the world's leading expert on the Acai fruit, having researched it in depth for over 15 years. Having heard him speak live I bought this excellent book as a resource to learn more about the unparalleled health benefits of this little berry. If you care about your health, then I highly recommend you read this book and get drinking the juice!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not A Book But A Marketing Brochure for Monavie, October 10, 2009
This review is from: Acai: An Extraordinary Antioxidant-Rich Palm Fruit from the Amazon (Paperback)
To call this a "book" would be overly generous. The author is in cahoots with a multilevel marketing (aka pyramid scheme) organization that sells a scandalous acai-based fruit punch called Monavie, and this publication is really nothing more than a marketing brochure used by their distributors to hype the juice to prospective customers. The Monavie company sells distributorships to people who in turn buy large quantities of juice (in the hope of selling it at a profit, which is unlikely at $45 a bottle) as well as their own marketing materials, and this book is one of those marketing aids (which of course profits the author).

This work cannot be regarded as a serious or legitimate academic examination of acai. Much of the material covered is the authors own research; some unpublished and some published, and all of highly dubious value.

Acai may be an interesting fruit but the scant research to date is hopelessly tainted by hype and commercial conflict of interest, and this shoddy "book" just adds to the problem.
