5.0 out of 5 stars About as good as it gets for commercial dog foods, September 12, 2011
I have two german shepherds that are doing very well on a diet that includes Acana dog foods. Acana Grasslands is a very high quality grain free dog food using high quality natural ingredients. It does not include cheap fillers, or low quality animal "by products". It's made by the same company that makes Orijen, but has a lower meat content, which my younger dog seems to do well on. If you find Orijen to be too high in protein, Acana may be a good switch (I used to feed Orijen to my adult female, but when I got a puppy the breeder recommended switching to Acana because of the lower protein ... now that he's getting older I'm sticking with Acana because both dogs are doing very well on it and it's a bit cheaper than Orijen).

My adult female has had issues with allergies in the past - but has no issues with Acana. The people at my local high end / natural / hippie dog food store recommend rotating through the different types of Acana to vary the protein source, and I have been doing that somewhat and my dogs seem to do well on all of the Acanas and the switch never really seems to have any adverse impact on their digestion (I'll usually do 50/50 for a day or two as I switch). Grasslands is my favorite though because my dogs' daily diet also includes raw chicken wings and occasionally backs, so the Grasslands adds a little variation to their protein source (if I didn't feed raw chicken, the Wild Prairie Acana Wild Prairie Dog Food - 29.7 lb. would probably be my go-to choice, primarily because it's a bit cheaper. But overall my dogs are doing great on this diet - they are both lean and athletic with high energy and healthy coats. If you are currently feeding your dog a lower quality dog food (and 99% of the commercial dog foods available at most grocery stores are total garbage), you should try switching to a higher quality food like Acana and will likely see improved overall health.

I also supplement daily with salmon oil Grizzly Salmon Oil All-Natural Dog Food Supplement in Pump-Bottle Dispenser, 32 Ounces and nupro joint support Nupro Joint Support All Natural Dog Supplement

In the past, I've always purchased my dog foods locally even though it would be much more convenient to buy it on Amazon and have it shipped to my door because Acana and Orijen have always had outrageous shipping charges added on by the few sellers that offer them on Amazon. As of this writing, this Acana is sporting free shipping on top of a pretty reasonable price for the product vs. where I've seen it elsewhere, so overall this is a very good deal. Prices change periodically on Amazon so who knows if that will change, hopefully not.
