The Google Web Toolkit (GWT) is a key member of Google's popular array of software development solutions, and is easily the most popular Ajax framework solution for Java developers. Fully compatible with the most popular Java frameworks, Grails and Spring among them, GWT is quickly going to become an indispensable part of Java-minded developers' knowledge base.

Accelerated Google Web Toolkit offers a fast paced yet thorough introduction to GWT, offering serious developers not only key insights into the framework's capabilities, but also into how readers can most effectively incorporate GWT into their daily development routine.

3.0 out of 5 stars Accelerated GWT - its ok, August 21, 2009
This review is from: Accelerated GWT: Building Enterprise Google Web Toolkit Applications (Expert's Voice in Web Development) (Paperback)
Accelerated GWT from Apress by Vipul Gupta has shown me that you can't judge a book by its cover but you can judge a book by its title. As clearly indicated by the title, this book isn't professional GWT or advanced, it is accelerated, which when you really stop to think about it means " to cause faster or greater activity, development, progress, advancement." ([...]) Acceleration is exactly what this book is about: it covers pretty much every topic that is basic to GWT and it covers them very well.

That being said, the back cover caused me to judge this book incorrectly. The "Apress Roadmap" on the back indicates that Accelerated GWT should come after Beginning Google Web Toolkit and I disagree. I think Accelerating GWT should be on par with a beginning book. While the topics it covers are very diverse and dispersed it is only 300 pages long and thus doesn't cover any of the chosen topics in depth.

Overall I really enjoyed the book's content even if it was sparse at times. I think this book is a great tool to get up and running using GWT in no time but if you are looking for advanced information on any topics then consider purchasing another book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, August 25, 2008
By
Andy King (Scottsdale, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Accelerated GWT: Building Enterprise Google Web Toolkit Applications (Expert's Voice in Web Development) (Paperback)
This was the first book that I purchased as I begin to learn GWT. I had high expectations; I guess I was drawn in by the title. But after a first quick read I cannot recommend this book. A significant part of the book was dedicated to simply listing the widgets that are available in GWT and describing them ... I really don't need to read a book for such information, and particularly a book that has the word "Enterprise" in the title. I expected to see information that was geared toward large-scale and robust application construction, but instead the text seemed to meander through topics with a lack of true cohesiveness and direction.

A much better book, in my opinion, is: GWT in Practice, and excellent book for both beginning and intermediate GWT programmers.

5.0 out of 5 stars quite good accelerated overview, January 10, 2010
This review is from: Accelerated GWT: Building Enterprise Google Web Toolkit Applications (Expert's Voice in Web Development) (Paperback)
I found this book to be a quite good accelerated overview. It covers all the core concepts (RPC, widgets, projects, CSS) with useful and understandable examples. It covers advanced topics like custom serialization, the details of CSS, and a lengthy piece on internationalization with a good localization example.

In comparison, GWT in Practice (although a good book) left me not understanding the client side as well as I'd like. The criticisms from the other reviewers are fair, but this book deserves a much higher score. It was worth the time I put into it.

GWT 2.0 is out, and this is still a good book. The UiBinder is not covered, of course, but the core concepts are still mostly relevant with only a few deprecated topics covered.
