I have the 13" Macbook Pro Retina that I wanted to connect to a Dell Ultrasharp U2412M. I love my Dell monitor, but it came with no HDMI input, only DisplayPort. Having read about DisplayPort's advantages over DVI: Higher resolution with Ver. 1.2, audio, daisy-chaining, etc.; I decided to check into it on Amazon.

Apple's approach to video connection is to use a MiniDP to DVI Adaptor, and I wanted something cleaner and less bulky. When I began looking on Amazon I found DP cables for less than $10. But the reviews were all over the lot, with many people complaining about flickering and awake-from-sleep issues. For this reason I was leery of most offerings. This cable by Accell was more expensive, but it had better reviews. Also, when you go into other online tech stores like Newegg, you find them offered there. Accell offers a lifetime warranty and they are headquartered in CA. So I decided to take a chance.

The Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable comes in two versions: 1.1 and 1.2. The 1.2 version is much superior (and backward compatible to 1.1). Version 1.2 supports higher resolution (up to 4K), audio, lets you daisy-chain up to 3 monitors, and offers twice the data rate (up to 21 GB/sec). The cost of a Ver. 1.2 cable is only a couple of dollars more than the Ver. 1.1, making that decision a no-brainer.

When I ordered by cable, I ordered both the one and two meter length. I recommend the longer cable as one meter barely reached from the left side of my Macbook Pro. What is most pleasing is that I now do not have the short, white Apple adaptor coming out of the MBP into a large connector to a black, clunky DVI cable. I elevate my MBP on a stand (Hi-rise by 12South), and I found the Accell Mini Display cable fit more snugly than Apple's adaptor.

After buying a new monitor (a dell u2713hm) I soon found out the displayport cable I first bought was causing problems. My computer wouldn't start anymore with the displayport cable connected. After searching for a solution I found out it's a problem caused by the 20th pin in a displayport cable, which is the power pin. This pin shouldn't be connected, but for some reason in most cables it is. This causes all kind of weird problems, like the one I had.

I ordered this cable because I read somewhere that Accell cables are VESA-compliant, which means, the 20th pin isn't connected. Still not 100% sure, I bought this cable and it works perfectly. My computer boots, with this cable connected, it seems like Accell is the way to go when you're facing my problem. I've been using this cable for a couple of weeks now, problem free!

I didn't won't to give this adapter a bad review since it didn't work for my configuration and I did not use it. It may be a good adapter at the price. Below is how I reviewed the Apple Mini MB5717Z/A DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter:

I recently purchased a Mac Mini 2.6 GHz Quad-Core Intel core i7 and a 27” ASUS PB278Q WQHD LED-lit PLS Professional Graphics Monitor. The monitor came with several connecting cables, VGA-VGA, DVI-DVI, HDMI-HDMI, DisplayPort to DisplayPort. The Mac mini has an HDMI and a mini DislpayPort connection. I tried the HDMI, but of course the best resolution I could get was 1080. I needed an adapter cable to connect the Mac mini to the ASUS monitor. I tried three adapter cables. Neither the Accell B143B-003J UltraAV Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort 1.2 Cable, the StarTech M/M MDP2DPMM6 Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort Adapter Cable, nor the Monoprice 5106 Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter gave me the full 2560 X 1440 resolution of the monitor or fill the entire display of the monitor. I didn’t originally purchase the Apple Mini MB571Z/A DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter based on its price. I thought that the other adapter cables would work. I went ahead and ordered the Apple adapter cable. When it arrived, I connected it to the Mac mini and ASUS monitor. When I power the Mac and monitor back up, I immediately had full 2560 X1440 resolution and full screen display. I have been using the monitor with the Mac mini and Apple adapter cable now for six weeks and have had no issues. I have had no problems with the monitor waking from sleep mode like I have read in other reviews using other adapter cables to connect a Mac mini and ASUS monitor. This is correct adapter for my Mac mini configuration and monitor. I would not recommend trying to make the other adapter cables work.

I use this cable to drive my Dell U2913HM from Macbook Air.
All good, working as expected.
Shipping to Australia a bit expensive though.

I got 3 cables to drive 3 U3011 monitors are replacements for cables that were DisplayPort to Displayport with mDP adaptor. At first the cables appear to be very thin versus every other cable I've tried. But they are clearly marked v1.2. I have issues with the monitors ramdonly NOT going to sleep, little if any issue with the monitors coming out of sleep. These cables didn't fix the issues unfortunately, but they work fine when the monitors are on at full resolution. Read on-line that the NEC cables might work for related issues. Will give those a try.
