Book Description

Keleya Smith is a confident Southern woman who finds herself at an inadvertent crossroad at age twenty-six, waiting for life to unveil meaning and purpose. She thought she had the ultimate catch with Kris, but their four-year relationship is destroyed with one night of deceit. The breakup forces Keleya to come to a discomforting realization: she is unfulfilled, often seeking refuge in her hobby, family, and friends. Despite the emotional damage, Keleya remains loyal to love. So when fate drops someone new at her doorstep, she transfers the yearning for intimacy, respect, and friendship to Jordan—an attractive twenty-nine-year-old native of Philadelphia. This newfound relationship with Jordan catches Keleya by surprise and tests her looming desire for her old confidant Kris. But when feelings for Jordan transform into more than casual dating, her faith in authentic relationships is challenged by an unforeseen circumstance. In the struggle to manage trust and vulnerability, Keleya finds herself caught in a whirlwind of old loves and new possibilities.

On top of romantic woes, Keleya has to navigate relationships with her best friend, JaCola, and immediate family members. Now, more than ever, she is at odds with her gossiping sister, Nkosazana, and pained by the broken relationship with her father. Over the course of a year, Keleya has to face some shocking truths. But in the end, she finds solace in her love life and herself.

About the Author

During childhood and teenage years, author L. Cherelle wrote short stories and plays, but it was not until 2009 that she decided to take a leap of faith and prove to herself that the process of writing and publishing is surmountable. In December 2009, she transferred her passion for all things handmade to the art of storytelling. L. Cherelle writes stories that reflect the lives and relationships of Southern, lesbian identified Black women in the hope that readers will seek authenticity in their relationships and within themselves. “Through my characters, I hope that all women shed damaging stereotypes and tainted expectations. We can expound on the meaning of womanhood by forming our own definitions.” L. Cherelle uses her relationships and experiences as a jump off for characterization and plot development, pulling lessons from the joys and pains of friends and family members. “It is important that my characters be relatable and a reflection of who I am and what we—Black, lesbian-identified women—experience.” Accept the Unexpected is L. Cherelle’s debut novel and definitely not her last. She is currently writing and editing future Resolute Publishing titles. “Novel writing is an adventure. It has forced me to push myself and believe in myself as well. I look forward to expanding my imagination even more and growing for readers.” L. Cherelle is a native of Memphis, TN.

4.0 out of 5 stars Whatever You Want May 6, 2011

Accept the Unexpected by L. Cherelle is a novel about an African-American lesbian couple and the trials and tribulations that they experience in dating. Accept the Unexpected was upbeat, realistic and provided a look into a relationship that is full of miscommunication, values, self-worth and more.

Keleya and Kris are a devoted loving couple until one of them decides to stray. Can this relationship be saved, or will the deception keep them apart? Keleya is a strong, black woman who knows what she wants and refuses to settle, but after her breakup she decides it is time to re-evaluate what she has been putting up with, and what she actually wants from a partner. With no explanation, and some half truths, Keleya spends more time with her friends and family while trying to determine if she will get back into the dating scene.

Concerned friends decide to hook Keleya up with Jordan, a sexy, black woman who seems well put together and knows what she wants. After spending time together they share some of the same beliefs and decide to give it a go, that is until drama strikes this relationship as well. Is Keleya doomed; will she eventually find love, or give up trying? Can she mend herself and in turn find what she is looking for? Accept the Unexpected is full of drama and will have you racing to the finish line to see if Keleya will indeed accept love and be able to forgive those who have wronged her. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story and cannot wait to see what else Ms. Cherelle has in store for her readers. I recommend Accept the Unexpected to readers of all genres.

4.0 out of 5 stars Expect something good... April 3, 2011
Format:Paperback
"Accept the Unexpected" is about a black lesbian's journey through moments of hurt, love, success and growth that bring her life full circle.

Keleya, a Southern Lady with moments of fire, finds herself in near shock by events early in the book. With the support of friends, family and a new love she finds a way to handle each situation. As she grows, she learns that there's a time to embrace and that there's a time to let go.

"Accept the Unexpected" is full of the life and dialogue of black lesbians. The family time is priceless. You will feel the unique traits of each character and be reminded of the thought process of a few women that you know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good! July 10, 2011
Format:Paperback
"Accept the Unexpected" by L. Cherelle revolves around the relationship of Kelaya and Kris. The couple are African-American lesbians who find their relationship at a crossroads after a night of deceit. After the deceit is brought to light, the question of shall they stay together is raised.

Kelaya, who is the main character, must decide for herself what she wants in a relationship and what she expects from a potential partner. Kelaya spends time with family and friends as she decides if she wants to try her hand at the dating scene again. Enter Jordan, a woman who Kelaya's friends thought would be a good match for her.

Kelaya and Jordan hit it off immediately as they have many things in common and are looking for the same character traits in a relationship. Everything seems to be going perfect in their relationship until Kris re-enters the picture. The rollercoaster of if Kelaya will stay in her current relationship or return to Kris begins and it is a familiar twist of emotions that all of us, whether heterosexual or homosexual, can understand.

I would recommend "Accept the Unexpected" to everyone because forgiveness, redemption, and love are topics that everyone can understand. I look forward to reading more of L. Cherelle's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Journeys We Take To Love.... January 27, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
L. Cherelle did a wonderful job crafting characters whom I enjoyed! Keleya and Kris had me quietly hoping at times and excitedly cheering at others, all the while wondering if they were going to find their way back to love. I rather enjoyed the lessons Keleya encountered. Yes, I believe we, as lovers, must accept the unexpected and be willing to learn from our mistakes. If we are willing to easily and readily give up on love, then we suffer the consequences of that action. But the gems in our crown shine brightest when we turn and face the person in the mirror and vie to make a better decision next time. Keleya learns from her missteps. You must read it to know surmise how she does that! The novel is truly well worth the read.

I wanted more of Keleya and Kris, but I did relish Keleya and Jordan and the heat of their gently smoldering passion, their touch and go, start and stop love. Yet I know that sometimes we part as lovers and experience the delight of others in the absence of our heart's desire.

The cast of this read will keep you laughing, sighing and wondering. Be prepared to fall in love and lose yourself in Memphis...in the maze of your own heart!

Imagine that! I had the privilege of being in an online writing group that boasted L. Cherelle as a member! I found her to be warm, resourceful, engaging, intelligent and a Southern lady, somewhat like Keleya. :) Indeed, I'm looking forward to reading her new novel!
