Excellent Self-Study for Access 2007 VBA,
By
This review is from: Access 2007 VBA Programmer's Reference (Programmer to Programmer) (Paperback)
This book has extensive coverage of an area vital to Access developers and power users, by a very knowledgeable team, ably led by Teresa Hennig. It includes something more than an overview explaining new features of Access 2007. That is important because: many features are new and changed in Access 2007, much of what we do with VBA is automating and enhancing features we use manually via the user interface, and the new Office 2007 user interface can be overwhelming without a helping "hand up". Then the book covers VBA from the basics to in-depth advanced levels. It is a worthy successor to the Access 2003 VBA Programmer's Reference and, in my opinion, "raises the bar" for VBA books. I'll be using it as a reference in presentations to my Access user groups, as well as a handy reference for my own work. I recommend it to Access power users, as well as aspiring and working Access developers.

Minimal 2007 conversion details,
By
This review is from: Access 2007 VBA Programmer's Reference (Programmer to Programmer) (Paperback)
I purchased this book in main part because the description suggested that it addressed the 2007 changes in Access, including helpful information in upgrading to 2007. However, I felt that clearly was the not case. Yes, it contains typically found information that applies to the 2007 version, but is virtually absent real detail providing specific guidance on the problems and complexities that can be encountered in VBA, Ribbon use, and references when converting Access 2002/2003 up to 2007. No details regarding managing old toolbars converted to Add-in tabs. No details on which old VBA does not convert, or causes predictable conflicts. No details on reference conflicts that can cause immediate problems. I expected more from four professional Access developers. Having now converted Access databases, I've found multiple code differences that could have been brought to my attention that would have saved me subtantial trial and error time loss. Should I have expected more conversion information detail? Normally when going from one version to another, I would find it helpful but not critically important. However, because of the huge impact of Microsoft's new user interface, as well as VBA changes - and their impact on existing prior-version databases - conversion detail would be extremely valuable. So only based on this targeted expectation from this book, I would not recommend it over any other Access book - with regards to usefulness in dealing with conversion problems and complexities.

Access 2007 Transition,
By
This review is from: Access 2007 VBA Programmer's Reference (Programmer to Programmer) (Paperback)
I starting developing with Access 97 and have used each version since. I specialize in accounting applications and there have licensed several Access accounting applications for modification. This book addressed (easy to understand format) the areas that affect developers most (the U.I., code, classes). It is definitely for the experienced. It is a welcome addition to my library.

Great Resource for ANYONE working with Access,

This review is from: Access 2007 VBA Programmer's Reference (Programmer to Programmer) (Paperback)
Access 2007 VBA is a great book for experienced and novice programmers alike. It is thoroughly detailed and yet covers the VBA basics at the beginning. What I like about this book is that it covers details that other books seem to always miss. This would include Microsoft Office integration. Or, in other words, the code that lets you work with other Office applications like manipulating Excel from Access or Word from Access. It also goes into working with Outlook and even SharePoint, which are two of the hardest to find information on when working with Access VBA. I am finding this book to be a great addition to my library and I believe you will too.

Great Desk Reference and Self paced study system.,

This review is from: Access 2007 VBA Programmer's Reference (Programmer to Programmer) (Paperback)
My copy of the Access 2003 VBA was well worn by the time Access 2007 VBA Programmer's Reference became available. This new book is well written and organized and it is a great successor to the previous version. The team did an excellent job explaining and illustrating the new features in Access 2007, as well as the features that existed in previous versions of Access.
There are many new features in Access 2007 and this reference helps the developer get the best performance from Access 2007. I would recommend this book for all skill levels.

Extremely Good Text,
By Craig M. (Southern California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Access 2007 VBA Programmer's Reference (Programmer to Programmer) (Paperback)
I've been using Access off and on since Windows 95 and Access 2. This is absolutely one of the best texts on VBA I have read. Examples are clear, and appropriate; and explainations are complete without being longer than the need to be. The coverage of Access 2007's new features appears to be right on the money.

This books was a TREMENDOUS help in writing a Human Resources application for my company. I'm no programmer--but this book helped me a great deal with some of the VB that was needed for the database. I did also rely on the internet a lot but this was a handy tool that covered a majority of the basics--the internet was for more advanced scripting. I highly recommend the book for those who work with Access often...and even for those who want to take advantage of the cool things code will enable you to do.

Fantastic! BEST book on Access,

This review is from: Access 2007 VBA Programmer's Reference (Programmer to Programmer) (Paperback)
Without a doubt, the Access 2007 VBA Programmers Reference by Teresa Hennig, Rob Cooper, Geoff Griffith, and Armen Stein is the BEST technical book I have had the pleasure to read. Teresa's energy and enthusiasm shows on every page. Rob, Geoff, and Armen add greatness to the team. I absolutely love the path that the book takes! Unlike the title suggests, this book covers far more than VBA.
I got much more than I was expecting; thought it would be focused on code -- but No! For someone who is transitioning to 2007 from previous versions, there is extensive knowledge on what to expect in the new version -- not just lists, but thorough and easy-to-understand explanations. For someone starting with Access 2007, everything is interesting and very well-explained! ... whether you used previous versions or not. It is a hard book to put down (even though it is so big)! I would recommend this book to anyone who is developing with Access (no matter what version), anyone who WANTS to be a programmer, and finally, anyone who just uses Access (you will be assimilated <smile>). The book is so much more than code ... and for those looking for a great code reference, you found it! Warm Regards, Crystal * (: have an awesome day :) *

Well written for even an Access newbie,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Access 2007 VBA Programmer's Reference (Programmer to Programmer) (Paperback)
I had done very little code writing, and only that which I needed and found by googling. So I found myself writing code for what I needed to happen, but not having a clue of what I was writing. I read the reviews on this book and the 5 star folks are very correct. This is an excellent book for beginners and advanced programmers, which is a tough spread to cover. As a newbie, I was able to self-teach myself the basics of VBA and now am able to read and use advanced code much more easily. Well worth the purchase and I have tabs stuck all over the place. The appendixes were worth the price alone, and the tips they share are valuable. Great job.

Great book for Access beginner to intermediate,
By Patrick Headley (Highlands Ranch, CO, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Access 2007 VBA Programmer's Reference (Programmer to Programmer) (Paperback)
As a user of Microsoft Access since Access 97 I have a great deal of experience with Microsoft Access. My reason for reading this book was to learn about new features in Access 2007 that I haven't stumbled upon myself or heard about through the user group in which I belong. Having past experience with Access meant that I didn't read the entire book or read it in any particular order.
What I found is this. This book demonstrated new features in Microsoft Access 2007 that I didn't know about before. I believe the book would be a good read for beginning Access/VBA users that want to gain valuable knowledge with Access and VBA. For intermediate and advanced users this book would also make a good reference for user's that want to gain knowledge on specific features in Microsoft Access. I found the knowledge of the authors to be quite good and, qually as important, it was easy an easy book to read and understand. I now have the Microsoft Access 2010 Programmer's Reference in hand (written by three of the same authors of Access 2007 VBA Programmer's Reference) and I am looking forward to reading it in greater detail than I did with the Access 2007 VBA Programmer's Reference. |
