4.0 out of 5 stars A good game that pales next to its predecessor.
"Tex Murphy: Overseer" is an entertaining game. Like "The Pandora Directive" before it, it uses live action scenes mixed with point and click exploration to guide you through what is ultimately an interactive movie. The game is fun, though not as good as "The Pandora Directive".

3.0 out of 5 stars Starting to get old
This is the third, and sadly final, installment of the modern incarnation of the tex murphy games..At least the company knew when to throw in the towel..For the first time, the game does appear slightly stale, and the once innovative gameplay becomes just another game...But this was 1997, and a simply good adventure game made then still surpasses most of the great...

This review is from: TEX MURPHY OVERSEER (CD-ROM)
"Tex Murphy: Overseer" is an entertaining game. Like "The Pandora Directive" before it, it uses live action scenes mixed with point and click exploration to guide you through what is ultimately an interactive movie. The game is fun, though not as good as "The Pandora Directive".

The great inventory and menu toolbar from TPD is gone, in favor of screens that are less convenient and sometimes jump out when you do not want them to. In turn, the puzzles are more scare the TPD, and are often much, much easier. The graphics are surprisingly not as good as in TPD, though the game runs in a similar fashion and is easy to catch on to.

All in all, I would suggest playing the game's predecessor before paying the money for this game. If you have played TPD, go ahead and buy this. The story is unique, the acting is good, and it is entertaining. You will not be as impressed or as involved as you were in the last one, but it is still a fun ride.

4.0 out of 5 stars buyers and sellers be careful, March 4, 2008
This review is from: TEX MURPHY OVERSEER (CD-ROM)
A lot of folks are selling this as a 4 CD rom set, even the ones claiming it is new. I bought one to replace the game I lent a 'friend' and never got back. When I got it, it had 4 discs numbered 2 thru 5. I believe the seller is honest. So I did a little research. According to wikipedia it is a 5 cd set with a bonus dvd. I put the discs in the computer just to check...and they are all data files, no setup or install files. It's got to be on that missing disc 1. In a way I'm glad it was disc 1 missing. I'd have been more upset if I'd played most of the way thru and been missing the last disc! :)
Any way I am a devoted Tex Fan and I agree that this game is not quite as good as Under a Killing Moon and The Pandora Directive but what you as a gamer need to understand is that it is a Pre-qual not a sequel. It is a modern version of the first and second Tex games ( Mean Streets and Martian Memorandum ) which were put out in 89 and 90. If I'm not mistaken Mean Streets is pre mouse! I've played the oldies, but it's been a while.
So if you love the detective genre Tex is awesome! But to be fair I would start with Overseer, then Under a killing Moon, and then Pandora so the stories are in order and make more sense. And get progressively better!
Peace!
oh and that seller...super cool...when I explained the situation...offered a total refund no problem!

4.0 out of 5 stars Tex in his last adventure... Dang Microsoft...., June 16, 2010
This review is from: TEX MURPHY OVERSEER (CD-ROM)
I love the Tex Murphy games! I do, but when Access Software got bought out by Microsoft, it was over for the goofy PI.

Overseer is actually a remake of the original game Mean Streets, but told in a different style. The actors are memorable, the gameplay is very tight and the ambient music really sets the scene of something is wrong with the picture.

The only problem is that some of the puzzles are either simple or mind numbing hard. Plenty of game to keep you occupied, but beware if you are planning on playing this on either the XP, Vista, of 7 OSes... The game was made for 95, and if your graphics card is really new, have fun trying to get the game to properly display the VR rooms.

Those are the only hassles, but with games made in the windows 95 era, that's to be expected.

I played this game when it first came out. It is still a cool game for its age. It took me a while to get it to work on win7 but it was worth it.
