4.0 out of 5 stars A word of caution
This lockbox has 10 buttons to set the combination, but it's an unordered combination - that is, 1234 is the same as 4213. If you use all 10 buttons, there is a 100% chance that someone pressing all 10 buttons will open it. That said, someone without the combination does indeed have over 1000 possible combinations to try (1023), which is better than a four-digit...

2.0 out of 5 stars Jammed Lock
I purchased this product about a month ago and last week it jammed. I combination would work, but the unlock lever would not go down all the way. It had to be drilled into to retrieve my keys. I thought that a key was stuck, but that was not the case. It was a defective lock box. I would like a replacement. Is there a warranty for this item?

Also, this is the same box that the local fire departments use for getting a key into businesses and homes where the owner has requested it, though the fire box uses a tubular key. A very, very solid box with a great reputation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keysafe Review, June 18, 2009
This review is from: GE AccessPoint 001015 KeySafe Original 5-Key Permanent, Pushbutton, Titanium Gray (Tools & Home Improvement)
OK this is NOT a high end security key box. You are required to select between 5 and 7 numbers for your combination and the numbers can be entered in any sequence. I suspect there are only a few hundred possible combinations IF you knew that fact. However, most people who might be trying to bypass your security would rather break a window than go to all that trouble.

The documentation that comes with the device is NOT clear. After spending 20 minutes trying to understand the instructions I did a search and found an "English" page with 1,2,3 steps on-line at the GE site. It took only 3 minutes after that to get things working properly. (Note: the secret is that you have to rotate the screws 180 degrees on the back on the safe door for EACH number you are selecting as your number combination.)

I would not like to try opening this box with any power tool in my collection - it appears to be very durable.

It is very pricey for what it is but it does seem to work.

My daughter has used one for years with no problems that being the reason I bought it.

We used to hide a key in various places around the yard, so we're much more sophisticated with the GE Security Keysafe. Yes, there may be a few ways to put in the code, but it offers wonderful peace of mind that we will never be locked out. It looks good and is fairly heavy, and in our minds, well worth the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Owned 3 for over 10 years...Has yet to fail, March 22, 2011
This review is from: GE AccessPoint 001015 KeySafe Original 5-Key Permanent, Pushbutton, Titanium Gray (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have owned several of these and have them in place at a home in California and Las Vegas. The one in CA i have screwed to a piece of trim on the outside of my garage. I generally have accessed it approx. 3 time a year...usually when my girlfriend beats me home. Vegas I have attached to the top of my front door as this is a vacation home and many friends stay there when I am not present.

Pros:

Strong- Forgot the combo and it literally took me 4 hours of beating it with a hammer to eventually get a crowbar in the dang thing before i finally got it open. Also, at my Vegas house, someone tried several times to open it by hitting it with a rock, they had no luck.

Changeable code- You can change the code endlessly. Good for when you break up w/ the girl or have different guests (or maids) come by.

Cons:

You have to get 4 substantial screws to secure it to a house. (The holes are inside behind the combination plate after you open it.)

Overall, I swear by them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid and secure, February 14, 2011

There are two versions of this, a two key and a five key version. The two key version does not stick out as much and would be a better choice if only two keys need to be stored. I've used the two key version in two different applications over the past four years. In both cases, I've secured this under a covered porch. It has never failed. The box is more solid and harder to break into than any standard door or window -- anyone wanting to break into a house would definitely have more trouble getting into these boxes than into a locked window. They will also have more trouble getting into the box than finding the key you've hidden under that rock.

You do have to reenter the combination to close the box after using it. THIS IS GOOD! -- if you change the combination this is a check that you have it correctly set before you lock the box. We put one on a not-for-profit building that has several people accessing it. We don't have to issue keys to everyone and we can change the combination when we want to give temporary access to someone doing work on the building then change it back easily.

Five stars, not because it's perfect, but because it does the job well is reasonably priced and gives more security than typical schemes for keeping an extra key handy.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT for Frozen Climates, the blind, & in LOW LIGHT!!!, April 23, 2010
This review is from: GE AccessPoint 001015 KeySafe Original 5-Key Permanent, Pushbutton, Titanium Gray (Tools & Home Improvement)
I HAVE used my SAME lock box (same brand) for 15 years at two different locations. (Both in California's Central Valley- Hot, Wet, Cold 25F-110F environment)

WITH NO PROBLEMS.

This box has ALWAYS been installed where, at night, there is NO light, just shadows.

I ask you to attempt to open a "combination or number" lock at night, no street light, no flashlight, etc.,...HOW FRUSTRATING IS THAT? I KNOW!

I had a combination lock box (made by this same company) for 5 years prior this box....well, I was S.O.L. (outta luck) when there was no light.

This present box works wonderfully (DO NOT GET THE TWO-KEY MODEL--all Keys are not sized the same, especially auto keys).

AND if I lived in a frozen climate (I have), such as Boston, St. Paul, Chicago...I would love this box because I could push the buttons WITH MY gloves/mittens ON MY HANDS and it will unlock. Seaside? It will not rust.

IT IS VERY EASY TO CHANGE THE push-button sequence.

IT IS Great for visual/tactic learners. Just tell them "all four corner buttons", "top, middle, bottom buttons (both sides OR left OR right side)...Those that love numbers? Numbers are there as well but not in braille.

My lock-box HAS NEVER been hacked. In 20 years, my house has never been broken into despite being located in the lower socio-economic downtown area of California's State Capital City. And I used this brand of lock-box the entire time. 15 years using this push-button model!

(I'm now sending one to a friend near Seattle, WA....that is what prompted me to write this review)

Great product, as other people say, you can't use the same number twice in the combination, but anyway you have tons of possible combinations, so it's almost imposible to guess the combination. You do have to know the code to take it in and out. Compared to similar products, I don't think there's a better one.

By the way always choose the "5 key" over the "2 key" since the two key cost almost as much and depending on your key size may not fit.

Unit arrived in 3 days. I am very please with how sturdy this little fellow is and how easy it was to install on the door frame. Setting the unique key combination was easy too! This product looks like it will last forever. Only disadvantage is once you release the face plate to gain access to your key you must then re-enter the key code to mount it back in place which can be tricky if you are caring anything in your other hand.

This product is an invaluable aid for my mother in law, who is 85 and

ailing.Friends and family carers and medics can access her home without her

answering the door. As it is mechanical there is no danger of it not

working during a power cut.

Fairly heavy duty item. The other comments about entering a combo in any order are correct. But it's good enough for use with my RV. Half the process of keeping something secure is to place it out of sight of the average person, and this will work well for me.
