Nice Gentle Routine,
This review is from: Accessible Yoga for Every Body: Basic Series Two (DVD)
I just finished this program a few minutes ago and wanted to share my thoughts on it.
As a person with a daily yoga practice for the last seven years, a participant in regular classes, and with a home practice that incorporates programs of this sort(over 70 VHS/DVDs at last count) I would say that overall I really liked this. While my favorite type of yoga practice is vinyasa flow based, I do like to alternate with Gentle programs. While I was doing this particular program I was thinking it might be a program that would even be gentle enough for my mom (who is in her 60's), but as it continued I would have to say that there were a few spots where I felt it might be a little unsafe for her (and she has some experience with Yoga from classes and uses the Yoga Zone Basics 5 tape set). Even though Ms. Ward explains things very well and stresses to work at your own level and that "Yoga should never hurt", there are no modifications shown. For someone without previous experience of Yoga this could be a problem. There were a few times where I felt that had I not had the experience I have doing yoga that I could have caused some strain , particularly in my knees. I always listen to my body and don't try to always do exactly what the instructor is doing if I feel it's not sound for me at that given moment, but that has come with years of experience. Still, as an overall routine I did like this a lot and I can see that I'll use it quite frequently on my "gentle days". I really like her sequencing of the poses, the pacing, and the fact that there is a long relaxation at the end. It's about an hour long, but it really goes by quite quickly. I think Susan Winter Ward is an excellent instructor who has a great feel for teaching and a really soothing voice (which I find really helps in terms of the "feel" of the practice). So, in spite of my concerns I would highly recommend this practice but I think it is probably good to have at least a little bit of experience with yoga to be on the safe side. Namaste

Not for those with knee problems or most beginners of senior age,

I have been faithfully doing Basic Series 1 five to seven days a week for two months and like it very much. However, I thought I could use a little challenge so bought Basic Series 2 which in theory is just one step up from Basic Series 1. Perhaps Series 2 should have been named Basic series 2 1/2 as the poses were quite a bit more complicated and many really challenge the knee (a big problem area for me). Unlike Series 1, I did not find it that easy to follow the directions and had to keep looking up out of my bend or whatever to see what the pose was supposed to look like. Series 2 is more of a workout than Series 1 and though the running time is listed as 58 minutes, only about 50 of those are spent doing active poses. The last 8 minutes the students are lying on their mats in corpse pose and breathing deeply while Ms. Ward sits and looks solemnly at the camera.

I'm new to yoga so this product is just my speed. It's a bit long (50 mins or so) but very gentle. You can work at your own fitness level.

I had the day off and used Susan's video (Accessible Yoga) for my yoga practice. I was loking for warm-ups that open the chest for the class I'm teaching this week, and there are some good ones at the beginning of the video. I also like the various transitions from standing to sitting and vice versa. I really enjoy your detailed explanations of the poses, Susan. It seems that every time I practice with the video, something different resonates with me, and I'm able to deepen my understanding of a certain aspect of a pose. Namaste.

My wife and I are seniors and she was looking for a good yoga video for someone our age. She had taken a few lessons with a local instructor, but found that some routines were a bit too stressful for her joints.
This video recognizes that some seniors have physical limitations and cannot do all the same routines as younger folks. It presents moves that almost anyone can do, but still give the benefits of stretching and proper breathing.
