Several flaws, April 11, 2011
The blurb: A love child must be very careful to be seen as fleetingly as possible--and never to be heard at all. For a love child is an embarrassment to her unwed mother, to her wealthy father and to a society that doesn't like to have its conscience troubled. But when the child becomes a woman as enchanting as Saranne, she can't be hidden forever from sight in a school for girls nor tucked away as a lady's companion who speaks only when spoken to. Gentlemen are bound to see her beauty and to interpret her silence as they wish, assuming that, as a love child, she knows all about love.
The above scenario only covered first 100 pages of the book (the latter part of the blurb was actually rather misleading), and rest of the book took a different turn after that; By the remaining 50 pages plot grew even more weird that I felt the author just totally lost the focus. There also were many flaws--The hero, Mr. DeLacey, was portrayed as a lawyer and landowner who seemed to possessed a lot of power. The fact is that lawyer's social value in that era was not as high as is in our current time, so it made a very unlikely power.
The heroine received bulk inheritance when she was a companion, but declined; Later received another fortune from his natural father whom didn't even wanted to acknowledge her at the beginning, these were just so unconvincing for the timid Saranne. Also, as a companion, she shared the same room with employer's granddaughter (when house had many other rooms); An absolutely wrong social propriety. The heroine was the weakest character in this book--she was gullible, easily fell for wrong guys, weak to stand up for her own rights, and no character growth either.
Other flaws such as: Lack of chemistry between h/h; too sudden of declaration for each other; too many characters appeared in the book without satisfactory explanations to their happenings and where abouts. The hair color on the book cover was wrong and clothing was too elegant for a companion. The book actually had a pretty promising beginning, unfortunately, too many mistakes.
