Book Description

4 and upP and up

Hold on to your hats with this alphabet misadventure! Enter the colourful world of Dianna Bonder, where coughing camels, lazy llamas, and rowdy rooster all muddle their way through the letters of the alphabet. From Auntie Augusta's apple allspice pie to the zebra with a zipper, you can join the delightful animal and human characters, including a toad with a tepid cup of tea, complete with a pinch of flea. Find out what happens when an inquisitive goat finds his way into Granny's jumping bean garden. And all the while, keep your eyes peeled for the hidden letter cleverly disguised in each illustration.

Children and adults alike will be captivated by the tongue-twisting rhymes and amusing alliterations that accompany the images. And with each illustration bursting with detail in this renaissance-inspired title, this book is as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the ears.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-A peppy poem for each letter entertains but the sumptuous illustrations are the strength of this title. Each spread has a hidden letter tucked amid a bounty of letter representatives; hints for finding each one and a list of questions for each letter, complete with answers, appear at the end. Most of the characters seem plucked from nature or medieval fairy tales. The rhymes are not for beginning readers to tackle alone-such words as "queasy," "souffle," "memento," "rambunctious" or "Finkle Dinkle Fenheim" may perplex some children-but shared aloud, they're a delight. ("As Beatrice baked her breakfast of bacon, eggs, and bread/a bug bounced in her butter, and Beatrice turned beet-red./`It seems I've ruined your breakfast,' was the cheeky bug's rude boast,/and so with that, Bea scooped him out and spread him on her toast.") After a few read-alouds, listeners may well have memorized their favorite bits.

4.0 out of 5 stars Accidental Alphabet, February 4, 2011

This review is from: Accidental Alphabet (Paperback)
Ever since Graeme Base turned me on to alliterations with his Animalia calendar and book, I enjoy any book like this. The review above by the School Library Journal sums up the book well, though I would add that people as well as animals stumble through this book of short alliterative poetry of their misadventures. The hidden letters in each page of illustrations & the questions asked at the end teach children to be observant & to look again at the illustrations with a medieval touch.
I give this book a 4-star as some of the rhymes and alliterations are slightly weak, and can't quite compare to the genius of Steven Kellogg, the master of alliterative goofiness.
