i get the new version of this book every year. this one seems to preach about good technique a little more than older versions.I get this book for one reason: it does a good job of keeping a climber out of trouble by seeing where other climbers (novice to experienced) have made bad judgment calls, or failed to make a decision that I could have easily made too. Reading their stories and analysis keeps me from making their errors or lack of foresight. It's a must read if you climb.

I guess its a good thing this book is a bit short read... Too bad they didn't include Canadian section - thus 4 stars. Definitely worth reading for anyone into the sport. I was almost on the scene of one of the accidents described, I saw evacuation process from nearby cliff. The "heavy rain and hail" mentioned in the book is understatement - we needed our helmets as a protection from hail and we went down canyoneering swift water technique b/c of the amount of rain. Some things should be experienced in person to realize - hard to put into a report.
