5.0 out of 5 stars A Complete Guide for Accompanists, December 5, 2009

(REAL NAME)
This is an excellent text on accompanying and coaching. Adler begins with a bit of history on accompanying, from the beginning of time, into the age of thorough bass, through the age of the lied, and to present day. Adler differentiates between accompanying and coaching, and offers reasons for specializing in each. It contains a thorough guide on phonetics and diction in Italian, French, Spanish, and German, and gives examples from the literature on each teaching point. Most interesting is a section on accompanying ballet class. This is the first text I have seen that offers directions for the ballet accompanist on page 234-238. Adler's experience and expertise shine through.

My only complaint is that while the book is indexed, it from a day when footnotes were not required in scholarship, so it is not easy to go to his sources on specific points. It does include a bibliography. In all, a valuable resource for accompanists.
