5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for Healthcare or Manufacturing Lean Projects, January 19, 2008

This review is from: Accounting for World Class Operations (Winner of the Shingo Prize for Manufacturing Excellence) (Hardcover)
Solomon's years of lean operations and accounting experience make this a must have for your lean collection. This is an excellent book that explains in layman's language why traditional cost accounting standards that date back to the railroads are doing healthcare and manufacturing institutions a great disservice today. Cost accounting standards and traditional finance approaches to ROI, are 2nd only to change management (culture) as to why so many lean initiatives fail. This book offers concrete examples backed up by New Lean Profit and Loss statements being implemented at actual companies. These newly formatted statements support lean implementations and meet GAAP accounting requirements even better than traditional measures.

5.0 out of 5 stars A keystone text for successful Lean Mfg. implementations, December 21, 2008
This review is from: Accounting for World Class Operations (Winner of the Shingo Prize for Manufacturing Excellence) (Hardcover)
The traditional Finance/accounting perspectives and metrics are among the top reasons that Lean Manufacturing implementations falter and fail. Lean change agents MUST understand how improvements in any department can be distorted and made to look counterproductive by inappropriate accounting methods. Likewise, Finance folks MUST understand how to reflect the true benefits of the Lean changes being made.

This book is a tremendous aid to both parties in the Lean journey. In conjunction with "Who's Counting?", the information made available by Jerrold Solomon is both understandable and immediately applicable to virtually any Lean implementation planning or analysis activity. Truly a "must-read"!

4.0 out of 5 stars Improvement Leaders Accounting Support!, January 22, 2009
This review is from: Accounting for World Class Operations (Winner of the Shingo Prize for Manufacturing Excellence) (Hardcover)
Not as easy to read as Jerry's novels, but very important information for process or operations improvers everywhere. Improvement leaders must understand in advance how the results of your efforts will be accounted for and what the impacts of accounting statements will be. Having seen more than a few would be improvers and improvements in commercial operations and in government service agencies defeated by misunderstood and misused financial information, this text contains very important guidance to help improve both operations and accounting. It provides detailed financial statement information not included in Jerry's business novels and fills a necessary gap in understanding how to format and report the results of past operations and to guide future operations. Its illustrations are easy to understand. I recommend it and Jerry's previous books to anyone seriously interested in operations improvement and to our accountants and schools for managerial accounting.
