5.0 out of 5 stars Arr! Great deck!
The cards themselves are well-designed; illustrations from "Treasure Island" as well as portraits of well-known pirates on burnished antique parchment decorate the face side, while a glossy, bold Jolly Roger decorates the back. The velvet bag makes it easy to keep the deck together, and we found the "Pirates Gold" coin a godsend, as we were playing Gin on the beach, with...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not so impressed
I knew this item was not shipping from eBay, but the shipping charges were not disclosed on the initial order form. Note that the $7.79 shipping and handling fee will nearly double the price of this item whether you have enough to qualify for free super saver shipping from Amazon or not. Also, the carrying bag is too small to get the top closed with the cards in it. I...

The cards themselves are well-designed; illustrations from "Treasure Island" as well as portraits of well-known pirates on burnished antique parchment decorate the face side, while a glossy, bold Jolly Roger decorates the back. The velvet bag makes it easy to keep the deck together, and we found the "Pirates Gold" coin a godsend, as we were playing Gin on the beach, with the gentle breezes blowing the discard pile around. Placing the coin on top solved everything. The same deck sells for $5 in St. Thomas, but if you can't get there, buy them here! This is the best price I could find online.

Avast, ye scurvy dogs!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing pirate playing cards, January 25, 2006
= Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Pirate Playing Cards Set (Misc.)
These cards are fun to play with and semi-educational, they feature portraits of 12 actual pirates from the days of old. The dubloon is an added novelty, it makes for an interesting dealer marker in poker or just a fun coin to carry around as a lucky charm.

This set is very nice for coin and card divination! :) The illustrations are attractive and make it easy to read reversed and upright positions. The doubloon is useful for coin divination, and more can be ordered to make a complete set for this use. The box is great for storage and can be used for coin tossing to keep your coins from rolling away! (Dice, too, I guess!)

A few small downsides are: The pouch is actually too small for the cards. It's a struggle to get them in and out, and they could be damaged in the process. I got a larger pouch for my cards and use the one that came with the set for coins. (I use foreign coins for divination and did not buy more doubloons.) The lid to the box easily falls into the box. I fortified mine with a couple of gold stickers to make it overhang the box so that this would not happen. I would have preferred solid black backs on the cards to skull and crossbones, but it's OK.

I recommend these 2 books as companions to this set:

SIMPLY FORTUNE TELLING WITH PLAYING CARDS by John Dee
POCKET FORTUNETELLER COIN DIVINATION by Raymond Buckland

This set is a lot of fun and a great value!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not so impressed, August 25, 2007

I knew this item was not shipping from eBay, but the shipping charges were not disclosed on the initial order form. Note that the $7.79 shipping and handling fee will nearly double the price of this item whether you have enough to qualify for free super saver shipping from Amazon or not. Also, the carrying bag is too small to get the top closed with the cards in it. I would say that is rather poor planning. :(

Those two points aside, they are attractively printed cards that come in a heavy cardboard box with hinged lid that can be used as a nifty storage box (a "chest", if you will).
