Product Description

The AccuStar PicoCan 275 open face charcoal canister is used for short term radon testing (48-96 Hours). Instructions, Data Sheet, Pre-Paid Return Mailer, and Results from Laboratory Analysis ARE INCLUDED IN THE PRICE OF THE TEST KIT. The results are sent by email or U.S. Mail. The results are distributed from the Accustar Lab (PA), within 3-5 business days of receipt of the canister. The PicoCan Model 275 is an open face activated charcoal canister radon testing device that is comprised of a metal canister with the dimensions of 2-3/4" in diameter, and 1" in depth. The PicoCan 275 canister contains 25 grams of activated charcoal held in place by a metal screen. The PicoCan 275 canister is closed with a metal lid and sealed with vinyl tape. This device should to be exposed to indoor air for a minimum of 48 hours and a maximum of 96 hours, with a recommended exposure of 48 hours. A complete calibration for each device has been developed from devices that have been exposed in a radon chamber operated by Bowser-Morner in Dayton, OH. Exposures have included different radon concentrations, durations and relative humidity. To Start Radon Testing, remove the tape and the lid and place the canister in the room to be tested for 48-96 hours. Fill out the Data Sheet; Including start date and time, ending date and time, and location tested. During the exposure period the device is left open and undisturbed, so that radon-laden air can diffuse through the metal screen and adsorb onto the activated charcoal. At the end of the testing period, replace the lid on and reseal the edge with the vinyl tape. The device must be returned to the lab for analysis within 8 days from the date of closure. Laboratory Analysis: The closed device is placed on a gamma detector. Gamma emissions from the decay of radon adsorbed on the charcoal are counted. A calibration factor accounting for exposure time and decay time is used to calculate radon concentration. This test is Not Valid in New Jersey

Don’t waste your money. This product is a scam. The testing product originates from and is processed by AccuStar. I collected and sent the sample in accordance with the instructions. I sent the sample to AccuStar in AccuStar’s PREPAID packaging. The shipping is included in the purchase price of the test kit. The AccuStar representative told me that they received the sample late and therefore they could not test it. Apparently AccuStar expects the purchaser to buy the product again and again sending it to AccuStar until it arrives in time. If I selected the shipping method I would expect to be responsible for the timely delivery of the sample, but when the shipping method and means is selected by AccuStar and PREPAID to AccuStar by the customer I think AccuStar is responsible. Apparently this is not the first time this has happened because the AccuStar representative was defensive and rude when I called.

Good packaging and shipping both to me and back for analysis. The results were posted quickly. I used another brand at the same time and location to have a cross check of the accuracy, both indicated the same result. Overall happy, would use this product again.

What can you say about a Charcoal Radon Test Kit other than this is the same product used by some home inspector. Some home inspectors have gone to computer / digital readers but as long as this is done properly, it's just a reliable. The difference is the computers can tell if a window or door was open during the test and the canister do not. I brought a new home and had 30 days to test, so this was perfect for me since I controlled the environment of the home during the test.

I ordered an Accustar test kit and a competitor test kit. They were competatively priced.

Accustar is a nice metal can with a screen that holds the charcoal in, take off the top, set it on the floor and fill out the paperwork, this is really dumb proof. Competitor was a carboard letter with a brown paper bag full of charcoal in it had to write all over the letter, could hardly read what they were asking you to write and record. Accustar is built way better and it comes with a return box.

I put it in the mail back to them on a Friday and recieved the results via email the next Thursday. Still haven't heard from the other comany.

To date I have been encountering more Radon readings from investment properties then I care to talk about. With that said I never tested my own home. I do have an inspector that can preform this service for me however I read, researched and learned about AccuStar so I wanted to give it a try. I have to say I was very pleased and what a simple easy to use product. I followed the guidelines, filled out the appropriate paper work, left container our for the allotted time and sent in with the box and postage paid stamp that is provided by the company. Their customer service and the speed that the company got back to me with the reading was amazing. I received an mail within a few days, printed off the Pdf with the reading, filed away and happy to say I was please with the snap shot three day reading. I now purchased the longer test to be safe and will use AccuStar. I highly recommended AccuStar and would suggest to a friend. Service was fantastic! Reading was accurate! The price on Amazon was the best!

Important: Read the paper work and guide lines to preform the test to receive the best reading. Also recommended do the follow up test which takes 3 to 4 months. Of course if you receive a high reading 4.0 or higher contact a professional for further testing and possible mitigation.

I bought the AcuStar Activated Charcoal Radon Test Kit to check on the radon level at
our home's basement. If you live in an area prone to high radon levels this easy to set
up kit will give you that information when you send it in to AcuStar to have it analyzed.
