A Step Above,
This review is from: Accurizing the Factory Rifle (Paperback)
This is a great book. It is a step or two above others I have read, offering creative insights on accurizing your rifle. If you have a lever action rifle this is the book for you! I have read next to no material whatsoever on modifying lever action rifles. This book goes into great detail on issues that rob acuracy and how to fix them. It is organized very well and should be very easy to find just the tip you need. There are lots of pictures to help out the written explainations as well. I did find myself wanting to see more usfeful diagrams though.
This is a must have for any gunsmithing library!

A great book for the home gunsmith,

This review is from: Accurizing the Factory Rifle (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for the person who wants to get the best out of his firearm and doesn't have a fully equipped shop. Most of the work can be done with hand tools (although a drill press is a big help). Mr. McPherson covers basics like polishing action parts and more exotic steps like stock-lightening and using RTV to damp vibrations. He includes all types of firearms: bolt actions, lever actions, and single-shots.
The biggest drawback to the book is its organization and that there is no index, so keep a pack of Post-It flags handy to mark the pages. The instructions are clear but you must read them a few times to fully understand what you are about to do. Many of the activities involve drilling holes in stocks and using epoxy bedding materials so take your time. There could be more photos and drawings and sometimes the text does not match the figure it describes. Even so, it should be on every home gunsmith's bookshelf.

This review is from: Accurizing the Factory Rifle (Paperback)
Today's rifles are manufactured at a high rate of production and as such there is not much hand fitting being done to improve accuracy or function. This is a great book that tells how to improve not only a bolt action but many others including lever actions.
The format is great in that he tells the good points and the bad points of different action types and what can be done to improve all of them. There is a lot of info in this book and it is not one you will read through in one night and toss aside. Keep it handy and you will read sections on actions, barrels and stocks. |
