'Scott, it's Rebecca. I need you.' After years of silence, Texan lawyer Scott Fenney receives a devastating phonecall from his ex-wife. She has been accused of murdering her boyfriend, Trey ? the man she left Scott for ? and is being held in a police cell. Now she is begging Scott to defend her. Scott is used to high-stakes cases, but this one is bigger than anything he has handled before. If Rebecca is found guilty, under Texan law she will be sentenced to death. He will have her blood on his hands. As he prepares to take the stand in the most dramatic courtroom appearance of his life, Scott is forced to question everything he believes to get to the truth ? to save the life of the ex-wife he still loves...

Review

This mix of family values, sex, sleaze and intrigue holds together in a gripping read with unexpected twists that ranks with anything Grisham has done in years The Times For my money, Grisham has grown stale over the past five years while Gimenez has gone from strength to strength...this is one of the best legal thrillers since Scott Turow's Presumed Innocent Daily Mail --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trying a man's judgement, December 2, 2010

Mark Gimenez, who knows Texas, takes his plotting and local color skills to the Gulf Coast for this legal thriller, which is in the Scott Turow tradition. Million-dollar Dallas attorney A. (for Atticus) Scott Fenney leaves Highland Park for Galveston to defend his ex-wife on a murder charge. The story is as good as the premise, and it goes down to the last sentence. Did Rebecca Fenney kill pro golfer Trey Rollins, the man she left her husband for? Gimenez, himself a BOI (Born on the Island), introduces readers to Galveston--after Hurricane Ike. The city becomes one of Gimenez's characters but doesn't get in the way of the compelling mystery, which climaxes with a twisting, turning murder trial, which is tastier than the shrimp at Gaido's.

This is a sequel to The Color of Law, and we find it amazing that this writer is not more widely known and that he is not widely published in the U.S. We read every book of Mark Gimenez that we can get our hands on, and thoroughly enjoy each one. Thank goodness that Amazon can give access to such writers.

My book club chose this book. I had never heard of Mark Gimenez before but love legal thrillers. To say the least, I was wonderfully surprised. Plus, our entire club enjoyed the book - which is most unusual! I can't wait to read his other books!
