This review is from: Accustar Alpha Track Test Kit AT 100 / Radon Gas Testing (Please Note: This Test Kit is Not Valid in New Jersey)
I've been studying this technology, and there appear to be too many choices in how to test for radon in homes. But Consumer Reports did a thorough job of evaluating the products on the market, in their September 2008 issue. (Their conclusions can be found online.) They highly rated two products. This one was their preferred choice, as a 90-day test, such as this one, is more accurate than a quick test. This particular product got their best rating. The other product is called RTCA 4-Pass Charcoal Cannister, which is a 2-7 day test. Oddly, Amazon does not carry that item. CR says that one sells for about $20. (Please note that I've bought but have not actually used this product yet. I'm merely sharing the results of credible research. It took me awhile to sort through the verbiage on this issue. I've simply shared the findings.) ~eric.

I bought this product to see if the level of radon gas had changed in the basement since purchasing the house some 6 or 7 years earlier. I chose this product because it had been rated fairly well by Consumer Reports.
I ran the test by keeping the product in the basement for about 6 months and then sent the product back to the manufacturer - free of additional charges - for evaluation. Got the results back by email (would have preferred a stamped/signed letter) and the results were the same as those done by a professional inspector when we had the house inspected before purchase. Great product worth buying for your own wellbeing, safety and peace of mind.

Mailed in the tester and received results via email within a week. Results seem reasonable but I have no way of checking for accuracy. Bought another to test over winter months.

I bought this item, hung it in the basement for 12 months, mailed it to the lab [no extra cost], got the report that my radon was in the OK limit, so no venting is needed...but I would never know how much or how little radon was in my home without it...

I bought a new house, and got this test. Taped it to the basement wall for 6 months (and kept the packaging taped next to it so I would not lose it). Test came back clean. Nice piece of mind and little cost.

This was the least expensive radon test kit. I paid the $10 extra to get fast results. Tested, sent it back and got results within a week. I was very low, 0.6. Am also doing long-term 3-month test to confirm.

I bought this since it was recommended in a leading magazine. I am so happy that I did. It accurately detected high levels of radon in my basement which meant I needed to put in an evacuation system.

I just purchased this item from Amazon.com. Shipped quickly. First it is really small sized (prpbably no more than a couple inches). Although it looks kind of big in the pictures. The instructions say it can be used for 3- 12 months (long range radon detection!! a plus). However it has to be shipped back to the company where it is analysed. They do send a prepaid first class mailing envelope but take no responsibility for lost in transit. recommend sending it back express mail to ensure delivery (another $15 !!). I will report again once I get the results back. It says NOT VALID in New Jersey.

I purchased the test in January of 2010 and followed the directions. I waited over a year before sending it back. I had to call the company to verify that it was okay to send. The woman was very helpful. I received the results within weeks through email. We have a reading of 5.9, so looks like we'll have to do something. I've ordered a test kit from a radon specialist to do a short term test for comparison. I wish I would have ordered two kits and done them simultaniously to be certain. I would give the test 5 stars if I knew that it was perfectly accurate, but the whole process was easy and very reasonable in cost. Too bad the venting system isn't as inexpensive! I'm glad I purchased this type of test and would recommend it.

Consider an electronic detector instead,

I wasted lots of dollars and time with these one-time testers, and waiting for the test results. I since got a Safety Siren Pro electronic radon detector, and wish I had at the outset. These presumably work as advertised, but it's nice to be able to get results in 48 hours, and to track readings, as well as to test different rooms, and different seasons. Buy a one-time test only if you are darn sure you won't need to do more testing. |
