Ready to use out of the box and reasonably lightweight, the Accutire MS-5550 is a fairly versatile tool for inflating everything from car tires to basketballs. It comes with multiple attachments that make it useful for inflating these different devices and with the capability of 300 psi, it can inflate most anything that needs pumped up.

Like most households, mine needs an air compressor from time to time, especially for inflating bicycle tires, which just never seem to hold their air. This air compressor works okay for occasional use and I like that it utilizes a digital readout gauge for easier readings and offers an emergency light for nighttime use. The device comes with a two year warranty and with the included attachments, I have used it to inflate basketballs and other sporting devices. Based on these facts, Accutire MS-5550 seems like a sure winner and a good air compressor for the average household.

However, once you have used this air compressor a few times, you quickly recognize some of its shortfalls. The first annoyance is with the air line- it has a difficult time clamping itself tightly on the stem of a bicycle tire or regular tire. If the stems are long enough, you may have better luck but otherwise, there is a good chance it will not form a tight seal and that means each time you try to turn on the power and start pumping, it will shut off after a few seconds. It does this with my bicycle tires and vehicle tires. I have to pump these items up gradually, a few spurts of air at a time. The device does work better with basketballs, volleyballs, etc. Since you need to use a needle- type attachment for these types of things, there is no need to worry about the seal and thus it has no problem inflating to the desired level and then shutting itself off.

This inflator is garbage. The digital screen comes with instruction telling you to zero it out by holding the reset button, This process doesn't work. The cable is too short to make it to the back tires of my E150 fullsize van. Lastly, the air pump didn't shutoff when reaching the pressure I set.

I didn't get the Accutire MS-5550 for inflating tires, and it's a good thing. Within perhaps six weeks, I used the device three times, and already it is inneffective and not worth keeping.

The first thing I noticed about it is the cheap plastic. It is not a heavy duty unit at all; it weighs in at maybe 4 pounds and the plastic, I think, is why it's so light. I found myself using it the same way I use my iPod; extremely careful not to drop it! We used it to inflate a pool raft the first time, and it took quite a while (I do wish I'd timed it!), and we used the air compressor I gave my wife to inflate the second pool raft (I will update this review and get the make and model of it when I get home; it's in her car). Her compressor, a sleek, miniature briefcase of a tool, well-built and solid, inflated the same model raft in about 60% the time.

The emergency light on the MS-5550 is not an LED, by the way. Antiquated! And the guage is cheap; I never had the chance to compare it against my digital air-pressure guage because this guage stopped working completely as of the third time we used it.

I'll just stop here and say I wouldn't recommend this thing at all. We do still have it because I might need to inflate a basketball sometime when my wife's car and the good compressor it contains is not at home. I can barely give it two stars... more like 1.5.

Pump shuts off by itself for no reason. Pressure gauge doesn't seem to work most of the time. It was okay to use to air up my car tires, but seemed to be a pretty cheaply made product for the price. Not horrible, just not great.

I'm really annoyed that this device, with a two year warranty, died after five months. When I went to mail it in for warranty service, the postage ($17) was more than half the cost of the product itself. I'm really not happy with this purchase.

Too much variability in the electronic shutoff pressure. Quick disconnect on valve stem very difficult to install and remove quickly. Returned unit and bought a Campbell Hausfeld with mechanical shutoff . You will always lose some air when removing the hose from the valve stem so compensate with a slightly higher shutoff pressure.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The most important part of this product works. It will inflate your tire. The power lead is long enough to reach from most cigarette lighters to all of your vehicle's wheels and a little bit beyond. The motor runs, the pump pumps, air goes in, your tire pressure rises. All good so far.

It also has a little storage compartment for the power cord and air hose. Neat!

That's as far as it goes for the pros.

Cons:
Noisy: You won't want to use this at 3am when you're trying not to disturb the neighbors

Cheap/not durable: Not just plastic, CHEAP plastic, flexes a lot, doesn't seem like the casing would survive rough conditions. Even the cord feels thin and easily sliced or broken

Dim light: Don't even bother with the little red emergency light, dim old-style flashlight bulb, How about a CREE or similar LED. My LED flash on my phone puts out 10X more light than this does.

Bulky: This isn't the first 12V compressor I've had, it's similar hardware to my last one but twice as big. That plastic case feels at least half empty. Wasting space in the trunk.

Gauge didn't work right on mine: I probably got a bad one, but the gauge read out works, and the buttons work in some cases, but reset didn't work, auto-shutoff didn't work, and since I couldn't reset the gauge it started at 6.5psi, meaning I had to subtract 6.5psi from the readout as I filled it. Instead of 32.5psi, I filled it to 39. It worked, but was annoying.

Slow: Slow, but that's typical with these small emergency inflators. going from 26.5psi to 32.5psi on a tire on my Dodge Charger took about 4-5 minutes.

Recap; It'll refill your tire. If you find yourself low on air and needing to boost tire pressure, you'll be glad to have this thing. 99.9% of the rest of the time, you'll be wanting to chuck it in the dumpster. There are better options out there, I'd keep looking.
