5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Blues album
This album of hard driven rock and roll blues ranks along with sacred classics such as "The Paul Butterfield Blues Band" (self-titled), "Howling Wolf-The London Sessions, Muddy Waters-Fathers and Sons and B.B. King-Live at the Regal. There is a quote on the back cover from Charlie himself saying "This is the best damn band I've ever had". This is probably true. The...

3.0 out of 5 stars Musselwhite Good...Band Bad!
This is a 1990 release from Alligator Records that could have been better. But it does have some high points and Musselwhite's vocals sound great as does his harmonica playing. The guitarist seems to want to swing although the songs cry blues. The drummer way overplays and can be pretty distracting. One song, "Yesterdays" has some of the most melancholy harmonica I've...

The guitar and harmonica played unison screaming solos sometimes and other times there is whirling improv. The lyrics have the right combination of bar-stool wisdom and genuine pain. Charlie veteran whiskey gravel vocals are perfection itself. Don't miss this great album!

All I have to say that if you are a harmonica fan, a player or if it is your future then Musselwhite is your man! This is a truely fantastic CD show casing some of Charlie's excellent tunes. He is a wonderful blues man and American harmonica icon.Buy this and feel his emotion and the power of his instrument.

Charlie is pretty traditional blues but they write some great music and I think any blues fan would love this CD. I compare him with William Clarke which is a compliment to Charlie. Keep it up Charlie...sometimes older is better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mean, Tight, & Funky, December 7, 2007

I've listened to Charlie for over forty years; this is one of his best albums. Why? He wrote all the songs, he's backed by the funkiest band I've heard on any of his records, he doubles on slide--excellently--his writing has never been better, and there is a great diversity in the songs, something that is difficult to achieve on a blues recording.
In "She May Be Your Woman", the boastful Charlie taunts a husband by telling him how he--and not the husband--has kept that gal happy. "When she comes in about three o'clock in the morning, you can only wonder where that woman's been (she's been with me, that's where she's been!)" The harp blowing is just as swaggering and lowdown as the lyrics. "River Hip Woman" is more of an uptempo number but contains fabulous harp and tight support from the band.
"My Road Lies In Darkness" features Charlie on solo guitar, and he's GOOD!

You could do far worse if you wanted to pick this up as your first Musselwhite album.

The guitarist seems to want to swing although the songs cry blues. The drummer way overplays and can be pretty distracting. One song, "Yesterdays" has some of the most melancholy harmonica I've ever heard but the drummer ruins the feel of the song.

The best track on this CD is "My Road Lies in Darkness", a song with no drums, bass or even harmonica, just two very bluesy acoustic guitars and Musselwhite's voice. A couple of other strong cuts are the blues boogie tune "River Hip Mama" and the nine minute "She May Be Your Woman".
