This is exactly the kind of Iaido practice katana i've been looking for. Everything about is just perfect. The sword came in sword bag stored cardboard box inside another box packed with packing peanuts which exploded in my face upon tearing a hole in the final box. I removed the black sword sword and began inspecting the sword. first thing i noticed is that the saya (scabbard/sheath) is a black matte plastic type material. Not the usual black piano lacquer that most katanas come in or advertised on the product image. This to me is actually preferable because the black matte material is very strong and is less likely to dent, scratch, or leave finger/hand prints. It's also easier to grip.
The Sageo kind of resembles thick shoelace, but it does it's job. The ito (handlewrap) is made out of cotton and is very tightly wrapped. The tsuka (sword handle) actually is made out of hardwood and real ray-skin. Which is kind of unusual for a katana of this price range. The tsuba (hand guard) has a pinwheel design that is either made out of brass, steel, iron, or some kind of alloy. It's hard to tell with the antiquidated finish.
I removed the katana from the saya and inspected the blade. The first thing i noticed is that the blade is somewhat heavy, but becomes unnoticeable after holding for a while. The metal is made of carbon steel. The blade is also thick. The blade is definitely not sharp, respectively. The very tip of the blade is still rather sharp and can do some real damage if you're really determined. The Hi (blood groove) is uniform and consitent throughout the length of the blade. The Hamon (temper line/blade pattern is obviously wire-brushed and not traditional, but very stylish nonetheless.

From the moment this sword left the box, I've been very impressed. All the fittings are tight, and in order. I expected to spend at least a little time fixing a wobble or rattling, but this is solidly constructed. The handle wrap (Ito) is very comfortable and attractive, hasn't budged a bit. The weight is wonderful, and I'm definitely feeling it in my forearm. The groove makes a very satisfying sound when swung properly. The saya is VERY basic, but I like functionality over flair. It is definitely not sharp--The edge is flat. You're in no danger of being cut unless you're really determined.

This is an awesome first iaito for its price-point. Definitely keeping this one for a long time.

This is the exact sword I was looking for.
I wanted an iaito (unsharpened blade) for Iaido practice.
It was a little bit heavier then my sharpened sword, but that difference quickly became less noticeable the more I used it.

It is made solidly and tight. The only problems I've encountered but this is a minor one is that the decorative gold piece that ardorns the eye of the Kurikata (the whole for the Sageo, string) loosened. it was nothing a touch of superglue didn't fix.

I recommend this product. A great deal for the money.

Bought one on a different account. Handle wrap comes loose at the top with use. The very tip is still sharp, but that is the norm. The saya dented eight times during the first five minutes I had it out of the box; the sword is quality for dollar paid, but the scabbard could use some work. Also the gold rims on the kurikata fell off when I untied the decorative knot it came in. My sensei had tilted his head with a perplexed expression after he swung it; it doesn't make the right sound as it was swung, but it is suitable for beginners. -K. Hays.

EDIT:

I bought a quality $650 iaito a couple of weeks ago and realized that this iaito is a bit heavy for prolonged use; a previously unnoticed wrist pain (I blamed it on shoveling snow) disappeared altogether after I made the transition. Taking that into account, I would not recommend this to anyone with any chronic problems or pain from the elbows down, or to anyone looking for a sword to practice forms with more than a couple hours a week (this sword is just too unwieldy for more than 45 minutes at a time), and again definitely not to an experienced swordsman. Anyway, as long as you don't train too hard, you should have no problem.

This is my first iaito. I've held other swords before, and the balance on this one is great. The edge is flat, so it won't cut you. I was impressed with the quality of the saya, I was expecting it to be cheap plastic but the inside of it was actually made of wood, and the outside seems to be made of decent quality plastic. My only concern is a tiny bit of the blade near the habaki comes above the habaki just a little bit, which can scrape a little bit of wood off the inside of the saya when drawing it. But that is nothing to worry about if you're using proper drawing technique. It seems to be really well made, no rattle at all. It feels great in your hands, and feels good to swing.

This sword is good for the money. The blade is very front heavy and takes considerable effort to get any sound from the blade at all. The sword is only good for slow practice, and anything faster than that will result in bad technique. I recommend this only for a complete beginner, and if your serious about learning the sword, consider buying a better one.

Plus side is that the sword has all the parts.

All in all the swords alright.
