About the Author

Liz Ortiz-Mackes is a casting director, teacher and producer who has worked behind the scenes in the entertainment field since 1990. As the owner of Casting Solutions in New York City, Liz casts for film, theatre, television, commercials, industrials and digital media. Part of the special understanding and insight Liz brings to all that she does is based on her experience as a theatre director, directing plays in New York, Los Angeles, Boston and New Hampshire. Currently, Liz is on the faculty of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, is a guest instructor at the New York Film Academy and conducts monthly workshops for the Screen Actors Guild Foundation. As a producer, she is working on several film and television projects in development. She lives in New York City with her husband and two sons.

This is a great book for all actors of any age, as it tells you how you can land that audition. It is a common sense no holds barred approach to the whole process. I am an 82 year old actor and found many things in this book that I myself can apply. If you are just starting out I recommend it highly it will save you a lot of time & heartache in this process called auditioning....

I love this book. No need to try to second guess any more. You learn what CDs and other industry professionals want when you audition for commercials and legit, theater and film. Not an exhaustive book on technique, but concise and to the point, this book is a treasure of advice and techniques to help you get the job. Ms. Ortiz-Mackes also tells what NOT to do if you want a callback or to ever be considered for future projects.
The 19 "Hot Tips" are just that, very doable ideas and tools to expand your skills and create laudable performances. Besides addressing technique, this book provides checklists to help look your best, structures to use to analyze and prepare scripts, and many specific ideas for how to continue growing as an actor. She even suggests ways to take care of ourselves. Makes sense. We are our instruments. Beyond the technical advice and invaluable perspective, I was especially appreciative of the supportive way the author acknowledged that we are unique individuals with valuable differences to bring to our craft. This book made me reconsider what it is I'm doing and provided additional ways to approach the craft. For those new to the business, this book is an absolute necessity.

Ace Your Acting Audition is a great book that should be read and referred to often by actors seriously committed to working more. It is a low-key, common sense guide to becoming a better auditioner--the most important skill an actor can have. Like most actors, I've grown weary of the "4 Easy Steps to Becoming The Next Superstar"-type books. In a fun, easy-to-read style, Ms. Ortiz-Mackes sets out examples, advice and check lists that are relevant to actors at any stage of their career, and in doing so helps an actor approach the audition--a situation fraught with stress and second-guessing--with confidence and practicality.

As a successful casting director, noted teacher and producer, Ms. Ortiz-Mackes has perspective and expertise that are of enormous value to an actor, and Ace Your Acting Audition is priced so that any reader--even actors!--can easily afford it. This is a book that belongs in every actor's library.
