An Air Combat Classic,

This review is from: Ace of aces (Air combat classics) (Hardcover)
We live in an era now, of video cameras and media and over the last few years more and more effort has been made to document on video and in print, the combat
memories of our war veterans from all of the modern conflicts. Sadly, we have missed one of the most interesting groups, that being, the fighter pilots of the First World War. Tragically, they are all gone now. They would all be over 100 years old at this point. Precious few were ever captured discussing their experiences on film, and only a few ever wrote down their stories. Those that did are ones to be cherished and studied. In this book, we have one of the war's greatest fighter pilots and the Allies' top scoring ace....and, if we are to believe what he writes (and after studying his career, I tend to), he was the war's top ace. He had 75 confirmed kills, and counting unconfirmed, behind enemy lines kills, his score was around 127. He was Hollywood handsome, a crack shot on the ground or in the air, and just a bit arrogant (and maybe a little full of himself). He survived the war without a scratch and despite all of these qualties, (and maybe because of them) he was not beloved by the French people as were Guynemer or Nungesser. Never the less, if you are a student of this era of military history, you will want to read this book. Fonck had a talent for writing as well and captures the flavor of the times and creates some vivid mental pictures of his combats and the scenes he witnessed. If you can get a copy (they are sometimes hard to find) you will want to add this one to your library of military history.
