4.0 out of 5 stars Simple and effective solution, November 16, 2005
This review is from: Acecad DigiMemo A501 Digital Notepad with Memory (Electronics)
With this unit you get a nice pad to hold you blocknote (Any paper will do! Just do not exceed the A5 size), and a convenient pen, which uses ordinary ink (so-called "short Lamy" refills, available in any stationary store). I find it very convenient for taking lecture notes and performing paper-and-pencil mathematical calculations.

Before you make your own decision, check if any of the following is a problem for you:

1. The paper size A5 is a standard in Europe and many other countries. But US customers may wish either to order a good pack of this paper size from the UK, or custom-cut the right block with a guillotine paper cutter.

2. The notes are saved in a proprietary file format, and you need to have a PDF authoring software (like PDF writer), if you prefer to keep and distribute PDF. Note that page export in raster formats like BMP, GIF, or JPG is already supported by the software supplied.

3. The pad is totally unsuitable for left-handed people.

None of the above is a trouble for me, so I find this device a very good and cost-effective solution for bookkeeping your handwritten notes. Especially recommend it for students.

I rate the product one star below the maximums because of the following incident: when I first tried to use the newly bought device, the pen strokes had been recorded inaccurately, which many omissions and distortions. I was quite upset at first, but then the carefully written manual helped me to find and eliminate the problem. The battery for the pen was too thin and the contact between it and a copper screening cap was missing. Some may consider it poor quality, but for me it's an indication of a thoroughly compiled manual.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great product terrible design, March 15, 2006

This product is actually useful, but the serious design flaws render this productivity tool less useful then you would have believed, when you purchased it.
The serious flaws are;
- There is no holder for the pen, the one supplied is an external attachment and is totally useless. This means that if you forget, misplace or lose your pen, the Notepad will be rendered useless.
- The USB port is totally a design flaw. The USB port socket is deep inside the slot in the front, and only the cable supplied by the product vendor fits in. No other standard USB cable can be used, I have tried atleast 10.

So in short, a great product with a crappy design.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bait and Switch. Buyer beware., September 27, 2005
This review is from: Acecad DigiMemo A501 Digital Notepad with Memory (Electronics)
The paper that comes with the unit is actually not ordinary at all. It is a small pad (not a4 size). It is about 5 inches by 7 inches of writing space. Very hard to take notes with this. Additionally, after checking 5 stores (officemax, etc) NOBODY carries the pad size, you have to drop down to an even smaller pad which ends up sliding around.

Stay away.
