5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value
When I told people I was going to buy an ACER there were lots of rolling eyes. "Dude get a proper computer.." is what I heard a lot. For the price it was hard to resist though so I took the plunge.

I was attracted to this laptop by the dedicated graphics card so I could play fs2004. I was watching other sites for the best deal but amazon had a brief sale...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value, May 11, 2008
This review is from: Acer Aspire 5720-6661 15.4-inch Laptop (1.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) (Personal Computers)
When I told people I was going to buy an ACER there were lots of rolling eyes. "Dude get a proper computer.." is what I heard a lot. For the price it was hard to resist though so I took the plunge.

I was attracted to this laptop by the dedicated graphics card so I could play fs2004. I was watching other sites for the best deal but amazon had a brief sale on this computer so I jumped on it.

Overall I was very impressed with the capabilities of this machine. It starts up nice and quick (especially after you delete all the 'bloatware') and seems to run smoothly even if it is Vista. I don't think I would expect to play Crysis on this thing but Half Life 2 was great. Photoshop runs with no problems. Lots of slots for usb, firewire, etc.

If given another chance I would buy this again since you can't go wrong for the price. From what I've heard ACER's product support is abysmal so I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope for the best.

Pros...Excellent value, dedicated graphics, dual-core, good battery

Cons...No display driver for XP, twitchy touchpad, supposedly bad support, glossy case easily marred by fingerprints, glossy monitor (prefer flat)

After spending a frustrating hour searching on the internet I found that this was a common problem with Acer latpops. The touchpad driver acer ships with this product doesn't work right and forces vista to use massive amounts of ram. Thankfully it's an easy enough fix and their are plenty of instructions how to on the internet.

If you buy this laptop, and don't get me wrong (it's a great deal for what you get), make sure you update the touchpad driver as soon as possible.

4.0 out of 5 stars I like it, June 28, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer Aspire 5720-6661 15.4-inch Laptop (1.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) (Personal Computers)
I got this on an Amazon sale and it was a great deal. I'm happy with Vista; haven't seen any problems with it. I've played an HD DVD on it with no problem. It does lag on the typing, but I haven't bothered with a fix for it yet. The only thing I would have liked is for the screen resolution to be a little higher; it's only 1280x800. It has a lot more ram, larger hard drive and faster than my HP laptop and was about 1/3 the price at the time I bought it.

good deal for decent graphics..contrary to other review has restore partition and software to create backup discs..both of which I've tested and work fine..actually has some decent software included dvd/cd burner, dvd producer etc..plays hd-dvd discs faultlessly..if you can get this at $699 or less it's a good deal

5.0 out of 5 stars A great value, May 30, 2009
This review is from: Acer Aspire 5720-6661 15.4-inch Laptop (1.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) (Personal Computers)
Having used this computer for almost a year now, it has performed splendidly. Everything worked as promised, and I have found it to be very useful for both school and playing video games.

The only two problems I have are that sometimes the mousepad is a little dodgy (I use a wireless mouse instead), and it tends to run very hot.

Otherwise this computer is a great bargain. I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars sort of ok, May 4, 2010

I got it as used item a year ago for 500 bucks. works good , no issues. very heavy . cd drive makes noise.
key pad is not so intuitive esp with the page up / page down. seems acer used its own standard.
has good processing power [core 2 duo]. did not crash often.
Too much for just home use. I would suggest dell inspiron for home use. hopefully they upgraded to windows 7 - cooler than vista.
screen is big and good . To connect to TV you can use the DVI to HDMI cable. Bit disappointed that it did not have hdmi to hdmi cable. speakers are good [ not like HP though. could have been better for the high end laptop]

pros: no issues so far . works good
cons : size , weight .

2.0 out of 5 stars Shocked and Disappointed, August 9, 2009
This review is from: Acer Aspire 5720-6661 15.4-inch Laptop (1.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) (Personal Computers)
When I first booted the computer, it prompted me to use a password. I created a password. Later, I could not log on because the keys did not correspond to the original word I created! So, I could not actually boot the computer. After trying it numerous times, to my surprise, it actually booted and I used it. When I used it, it worked beautifully. But the same thing happened when I turned it off and tried to reboot again. I read a review of this computer before and a similar issue with keys was raised. It's about time that this problem is solved once and for all by the manufacturer. I would think it should not be a big thing to resolve this problem. But the fact that this problem exists and I was forced to return the computer, shows that there is a poor workmanship in the manufacturing of this product. My old laptop that I was trying to replace with this one was an IBM. So, now I went ahead and purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad. So far that one is working well for me. Yes, the price was much higher but I got what I paid for!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad., March 7, 2009
This review is from: Acer Aspire 5720-6661 15.4-inch Laptop (1.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) (Personal Computers)
Feels cheap, looks cheap and performs cheap. It runs Vista half decent but after a month or so I noticed slow downs in performance. I keep my Windows Vista OS on any computer in top shape with virus scans, maintenance, defrags, system cleans, etc. so my OS is not what was causing these slowdowns. The Gateway Tseries however stayed top speed and impressed me with it's performance and great price. Given the choice I would say the Acer Extenza is good, the Aspire is ok but the gateway T-Series is better. Dell makes the bust quality pc/laptops you can buy, but in fair price comparision - Gateway-T Series or Dell Insperion is better deal for your dollar and have similar price of this unit.

3.0 out of 5 stars Seemed like a bargain, May 27, 2008

UPDATE 6/30/2009: The DVD/CD player is just poorly aligned. Once I got that resolved I can get it to play them... just takes some fiddling. Also finally used the webcam for Skype. I have to say that feature alone makes the rest of the issues bearable. It's GREAT to have a video cam actually built into the computer.

UPDATE 10/12/2008: This computer will not play a DVD, it will not function as a TV. It does not do what it advertises.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: I'm not terribly computer savy so the below is perhaps a result of my ignorance.

The computer was easy to set up, but I can't get the CD player to play a cd. It may well be that it isn't meant to (it's a DVD player really) but my experience was always that it would... and I like to play music while I'm playing games or online.

My mom's comment was that it was very much "like a Mac" but of course I've always had a PC so it is just a little off-putting to me - it doesn't seem well organized and the default settings aren't really descriptive.

All of that aside, the graphics are incredible - if that's what you want it seems to deliver in spades.
