I've had this little netbook for about a week now, and it is exactly right for our purposes: email, browsing, YouTube, MiniClip games, and word processing. It comes with Office 2010 starter (just word and excel) which is all we need. I'm not a techie and have no specifics to share, but this thing just WORKS. Right out of the box, you spend 10 minutes setting up, charge it up, and go. The first time you use Office you need to install it. I followed the recommendation of some other reviewers and (1) uninstalled some bloatware it came with (Acer games, NY Times Reader) and (2) installed Chrome and made it the default browser. IE was taking forever to load anything, but Chrome is much lighter and works perfectly. And the wireless is impressive-- it works even way down the long narrow hallway in my thick-brick-walls 1850's apartment building from where the router is placed-- our old Vaio couldn't handle it. The red is a nice warm cranberry/barn red shade-- a little pizzaz but it doesn't look like a toy. It's very light. It has no disk drive, but I see here on Amazon that inexpensive external ones are easy to find.

Two small gripes: (1) battery life is pretty short. Three hours at the most. It does charge up quickly though. (2) The keys are that sort of 'mushroom' format, they look just made for crumbs to sneak under and get stuck, and with kids in the house I feel the need to be protective. But obviously I need to do that anyway. And for less than $300 we won't be devastated even if the worst happens. Overall I could not be more pleased with this purchase!

I recommend the HP Mini case to go with this, black with silver swirls. It's just the right size, well made and very cushiony and protective.

This one is replacing a 2-yr-old Acer with a 9" screen, 1GB RAM/160GB HDD which I bought at Best Buy for $300+! I leave my full-size laptop at home because the Acer's more portable. I don't install hardly any applications on it; I save that for the home laptop. I only use it for internet access on location or on the road, and I can offload digital images from my camera's memory cards while traveling. It has a built-in SD card slot, and I also pack a USB CF card reader. This way I don't have to bring/buy extra cards for extended trips/vacations. Once home, I connect my Lacie Rugged portable HDD to it to offload the images, then connect the Lacie to the home laptop to process the photos. At home, the Acer resides in the garage as a utility laptop for internet browsing, Googling info for projects, user manuals, etc. I've never had a problem with the first one, and this one's even faster, bigger, brighter, yet still small enough to bring anywhere without weighing you down. Compared to my iPad, it's about the same dimensions except about twice as thick. Yet it's has full laptop functionality for less than half the price. It just doesn't have the iPad's coolness factor, and the touch screen. The only complaint I have is that the keyboard surface is so flat and smooth, that it's difficult to discern the touch pad and the individual keys by feel.

This horribly designed shell has a very small opening on the left hand side for ventilation. The thing over heats and freezes constantly, I thought there was possibly a way to kick up the fan speed from the BIOS but unfortunately the crappy BIOS is very limited. If you keep a chill pad with fans underneath it at all times, you will be fine... but isn't that why you bought this, for portability and ease? Don't waste your time and money.

Perfect little laptop. Ladies get this one!! It is small enough to put in your tote bag or large pocketbook while going on a trip. Remember that you have to re-confirm your trip?? No problems, this baby will do the job. It is internet ready!! The 4 hour battery is great. At the airport, you can check your email or write a letter. I suggest, that you get the external cd/dvd player. Add all your software (MS Office) and such. Forget Mcafee, download for free ADWARE by Lavasoft. It is free and does the job. It is very light weight. Get the sleeve to protect this laptop. I bought it because I needed a laptop for a class my company was sending me to. This baby did the job just fine, thank you.

First off I just needed a cheap computer to watch youtube/news and do email. I use Apple's Imac and Macbook pro for everything because they actually work all the time, don't crash or give me any grief. On to this toy. The Acer Aspire One with Windows 7 starter I thought was going to be better than previous models mainly due to Vista not destroying the computer to start with. Upon it up for the first time the setup (Win7) went ok but then the Acer software installer window comes up and begins raping your little system full of BLOATWARE!!! I'm talking Windows live essientials, Office 2010, Macaffe, Norton, and an endless string of worthless Acer programs. It slowed the netbook down to a crawl and lets face it, it's not to fast to begin with. You cannot stop the installation or do anything other than let Acer's auto launchers spam the hell out of you and spend an hour deleting it all afterward. So after removing the insane amount of garbage Acer auto installed on my pc it was finally time to use it. Windows 7 starter is kind of stupid as you cannot even change the background on this machine. Windows 7 is not much more than Vista with a few new cute features. It still has the same security problems, horrid browser (IE), and all the same frustration you have come to love (hate if you use a mac) with windows since 95. The bloatware installation almost made me bring it back (Go to hell Acer!) The performance of the netbook after all the garbageware was removed was decent but a lot of web pages load slowly where as my Macbook Pro and Imac load them instantly and all computers are on my personal home network.Read more ›
