Of course it freezes up! Apparently you people know nothing about computers at all. Netbooks are cheap for a reason.
This particular one comes with windows 7 starter which can use only 1 processor, not 2! Also, they tend to come with slower hard drives(5400 RPM's) and only a gig or 2 of ram. While Acer states that their netbooks wont support more than 2 gigs, they actually do if you install the right operating system. Upgrade to atleast windows 7 home premium, a 4GB DDR31066 RAM cartridge, and utilize "Ready Boost" and your netbook will be blazing fast. Ready boost is a feature of windows 7 that uses solid state (flash memory) as if it were RAM. Windows does this by caching frequently used data to this solid state memory (either a USB flash drive or a SD card like the ones you use for your camera. Skip the Flash drive annd get a Sandisk SD ultra card from amazon. Theyre cheap, costing only $10 or $20. Buy one that supports atleast 20MB/s data read rates. The point is this, if you people want your netbooks to be fast, you have to make them fast. Ditch the RAM, hard drives, and the windows 7 starter. If you want a super fast netbook then purchase a seagate Momentus XT ( you can look up the specs online), they are lightening fast. The Acer netbooks are powerful, its the peripherals and the os that hamper them. Besides if you want to use a dual core and take advantage of windows 7 features, you need atleast windows 7 home premium or windows 7 professional (this one supports ready drive!).

Cannot stand <ppl% so I am not in to supporting anything from them. Android is certainly the way to go for a tablet, but I wanted a real NIC port as I need that for my job. This model is the perfect fit - much lighter than my clumsy work laptop and does the job just a quick and in style. Customers always use it as a talking point. Windows Starter is cute and that is it. Purchase the 2GB ram, and install any 64Bit version of Win7. My performance index jumped .9 just by loading a fresh install of x64 WIN7 PRO. Great purchase at a great price. The display will blow you away compared to a laptop....

I've tried two dual core AOD257 models, aquamarine and white. Keep in mind the white doesn't look attractive at all, more like a plastic toy. Both have the bad habbit of freezing while transfering files over my home network, downloading files from internet or streaming a Netflix video. Once they freeze, you have to restart them from the power button. It seems to be some problem with the wireless network card/configuration. I've seen reviews about freezing also with the Happy2 line of Acer.

I finally bought a purple Gateway LT2804u which is the dual core Gateway equivalent of AOD257. Gateway was bought by Acer so they have very similar specifications but the Getway doesn't freeze. It is very responsive and works perfectly while networking. It is also very quiet and much more attractive than the AOD257 models.

My previous netbook was an Acer and I was very happy with it. I got the 9-cell battery for that one and while it added to the weight, I never ran out of juice. I gave away my old one, but realized that I used the netbook far more than I used my full-size laptop, so decided to get another Acer. I got the AOD257 and am happy with it, I have a house full of computers but use the little Acer Netbook more than the rest. The small form factor is great for most things.

However. Acer is actively hostile to the idea of user-upgrades. First of all, there is the crippleware of Windows 7 Starter Edition. Very, very bad OS that throttles what capability your machine may have. Of course all the netbook makers are apparently in collusion with Microsoft to make that experience so painful you will quickly upgrade to Home Premium. Grit your teeth and Do that.

Next, upgrade the RAM. However, Acer requires you to practically disassemble the whole netbook: remove 18 screws!!! AND the keyboard to get at the RAM. There are videos of how to do this on the web, but it is still very scary and dangerous. Same thing if you decide to upgrade the hard disk or replace it with an SSD.

The Toshiba netbook is at least as good as the Acer, and upgrades require removing a single screw to get at the RAM. Should have gone with the Toshiba.

I wanted a very basic, easy to carry laptop to carry on trips and do very basic e-mailing and web surfing at a reasonable price. Initially this Acer seemed to fit the bill. I knew it would be somewhat limited because of the Win7 Starter program and the 1GB ram. So the first thing I did when I got it was to remove as much pre-loaded excess as possible. I then started loading the few basic programs I needed to fit my needs. I struggled for over six hours attempting to load these programs. Everything done on the computer was super slow. And during that time, the computer froze approximately 40 times (no exageration!) and I had to power off the laptop and re-start it each time (about a 10-15 minute process for each freeze). I never could get the programs I needed loaded. I decided this was completely inadequate for even my basic needs. I initiated the system restore and am returning this product. I don't know if it was Win7 Starter, the 1GB ram, a sub-standard processor or an isolated lemon. I suppose I could have spent another $100 - $150 to upgrade it to see if that made it "adequate". But why buy a computer that needs to have upgrades as soon as you get it? I'm now shopping for a more adequate small/mini laptop more likely to serve my needs out of the box. It will not be an Acer.
