This desktop is powered by the 1.80 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 dual-core processor, which provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance, and it features a 1.80 GHz speed, fast 800 MHz system bus, and large 2 MB L2 cache. The preinstalled Microsoft Windows Vista Business features a new user interface, named Windows Aero, that makes it easy to navigate through the operating system and from application to application. Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

• Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 processor has a 1.80 GHz processor speed, fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

  The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

  • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
  • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
  • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
  • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  This processor also includes Intel's Viiv technology, which enables you to quickly turn the PC on and off (after initial boot) with a touch of the included remote thanks to Intel's Quick Resume function. It also offers specially-designed software that makes network configuration easy, for connecting to portable media players, DVD players, TV sets and stereos.

• Hard Drive: The 160 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers more than enough room for multimedia presentations and storing valuable documents. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.

• Memory: The 1 GB of built-in memory (2 x 512 MB, 533 MHz) is a decent start for power users. But you'll want to max out the 2 GB capacity for working with today's demanding business productivity applications.

• DVD/CD Drive: The multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It offers the following write speeds: 4x for dual-layer DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL; 8x for single-layer DVD-R and DVD+R; 8x for DVD+RW; 6x for DVD-RW; 5x for DVD-RAM; and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW.

• Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with a multimedia keyboard and mouse.

Video & Audio
Video and graphics are powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3000, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) 4.0. It's been optimized for enhanced 3-D to allow for greater game compatibility and realism with new video and display features to deliver a theater-like entertainment experience through Intel Clear Video Technology (which enables high definition video). It also has an integrated audio card with Intel High Definition audio support.

Bought this at circuit city -- looking for a small form pc with Vista potential (avoid the upgrade fiasco noted around blogs and such) I installed it the next morning -- the system would reboot after every user input. It finally began to hum along and I do mean hum -- the thing sound like a 747 jet. After getting it to stay on for more than 10 minutes in an attempt to download the monitor software the system shut down proclaiming that "not enought resources were available to perform the task". I promptly packaged the thing and returned it to Circuit City -- be ware Circuit city mandates a 15% restocking fee on returned items -- irrespective of the reason for the return. I was forced to buy another PC at Circuit City in place of the ACER. They did not carry other small form PC's so that will remain my white elephant. If you do buy it despite my warning be sure to place it far from your desk to minimize the noise factor -- perhaps a spare room or the neighbor's house.
