So much bang for your buck, it could create a universe, April 3, 2010
This review is from: Acer AS5740-6025 15.6-Inch Laptop (Blue) (Personal Computers)
This is a great computer. I am a student, but somewhat of a power user. I do a lot of programming and heavy audio file processing. I am also a SERIOUS multitasker (e-mail, word processor, Twitter, music, browser with multiple tabs, all open at once), so was looking for a machine that would let me do that.
The 4 GB of RAM and i5 processor are lightning fast. You won't have to close iTunes before using other applications anymore, that's for sure. Don't forget to uninstall all the crap you don't need before you get started - this will make it even faster.
The screen is crystal clear and very large. One con is that the screen is glossy. I prefer a matte screen because they show fingerprints less and are easier to see from different angles. But no big deal.
By the way, the casing is NOT bright blue like it seems in the picture. It is navy blue with a bit of shimmer, kind of like a car paint finish. Very attractive and not at all cheap looking.
The keyboard is a nice full size, despite having the full number pad on the right hand side. There is a handy button next to the trackpad that disables it so you won't get annoying mouse jumping as you type.
The one thing that REALLY annoys me about this computer is the extremely loud beeping noise it makes when you plug and unplug the A/C adapter. Even if you disable system beep and change the theme sounds to "None", it still beeps. Just remember to mute the sound before plugging/unplugging and it won't embarrass you in public. Acer should really address this annoyance, though.
But really, this is a GREAT buy. You won't regret purchasing this computer.

I was amazed, March 24, 2010
This review is from: Acer AS5740-6025 15.6-Inch Laptop (Blue) (Personal Computers)
I was amazed at how easy it was to set up my new computer. This Acer was great right out of the box. Between it and the Windows 7 it was so easy. I turned it on and was walked through everything step by step. All the updates to the installed software went quickly and smoothly. But was was the best was when I went to hook up my 4 year old Samsung 19" external CRT,3 Year old Microsoft external Keyboard, and 3 year old Logitech mouse. It all worked plug and play. Found all the drivers and installed with me doing anything but plugging it in. Same thing with my 2 year old Cannon printer. I am giving the names of each just to elaborate that they we not Acer products or new products. Then I downloaded the Windows 7 upgrade adviser and ran it. This software told me what units I had plugged in that needed to have driver updates done to work correctly with Windows 7. The only one was the printer as the others were done automatically when I plugged in the USB cables. Now back to the computer. I love it. The keyboard is great and mouse pad (almost don't feel like I need the external stuff like I did with my previous laptops). The camera (Crystal eye) is as good as my Logitech external camera and even has wide angle. The microphone quality is good too. The dolby home theatre is better than anything I have ever had on other Laptops but I still prefer the external speakers. The I5 Dual Core speed is tremendous and all my programs open and close very quickly. I have only had this for two weeks but have enjoyed it every day. And I gotta say after having XP Pro, the Vista Ultimate (which I did not like but struggled through) I really so far am very impressed with Windows 7.

Picked up nearly the same model at Costco for $599 after discount. Only difference is a 320GB drive instead of the 500GB drive. Seems like fairly solid construction. Keyboard is quiet. Track pad is a tad sensitive but I've adjusted how I use the pad with my fingers. There is a button to shut the pad off should you decide to use a mouse. Processor is fast, and, as advertised, fires up to 2.5GHz+ when doing processor intensive things. Did run a few low graphics intensive games and it did a fairly admirable job, though definitely not on high settings. Wireless-n has been solid. No mute button on the console, which is something I like, but not a big deal. Screen is bright - brighter than expected - though does have a low viewing angle from the top - and the screen doesn't tilt as far back as my old Dell laptop did. So you really have to be pretty square in front of it. I'm not a huge fan of the outer blue plastic, but, hey, I don't look at the back of the screen when I'm using it. The matte finish on the touchpad and handrest is smart (not like the HP's which show fingerprints VERY easily). Overall, great value. Time will tell on durability (I'm hoping for 1.5-2yrs).
