This is a great computer. I am a student, but somewhat of a power user. I do a lot of programming and heavy audio file processing. I am also a SERIOUS multitasker (e-mail, word processor, Twitter, music, browser with multiple tabs, all open at once), so was looking for a machine that would let me do that.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good not Great
I purchased the ACer AS5740-6025 a month ago and it is not great. The screen is shiny and very reflective and it fades out when it is in the wrong position. It is a better video and gaming computer than a work computer. The screen is vertically small for documents my old 14 inch screen was more vertical and worked better. Because of its limitaions as a work computer it...

The 4 GB of RAM and i5 processor are lightning fast. You won't have to close iTunes before using other applications anymore, that's for sure. Don't forget to uninstall all the crap you don't need before you get started - this will make it even faster.

The screen is crystal clear and very large. One con is that the screen is glossy. I prefer a matte screen because they show fingerprints less and are easier to see from different angles. But no big deal.

By the way, the casing is NOT bright blue like it seems in the picture. It is navy blue with a bit of shimmer, kind of like a car paint finish. Very attractive and not at all cheap looking.

The keyboard is a nice full size, despite having the full number pad on the right hand side. There is a handy button next to the trackpad that disables it so you won't get annoying mouse jumping as you type.

The one thing that REALLY annoys me about this computer is the extremely loud beeping noise it makes when you plug and unplug the A/C adapter. Even if you disable system beep and change the theme sounds to "None", it still beeps. Just remember to mute the sound before plugging/unplugging and it won't embarrass you in public. Acer should really address this annoyance, though.

But really, this is a GREAT buy. You won't regret purchasing this computer.

I was amazed at how easy it was to set up my new computer. This Acer was great right out of the box. Between it and the Windows 7 it was so easy. I turned it on and was walked through everything step by step. All the updates to the installed software went quickly and smoothly. But was was the best was when I went to hook up my 4 year old Samsung 19" external CRT,3 Year old Microsoft external Keyboard, and 3 year old Logitech mouse. It all worked plug and play. Found all the drivers and installed with me doing anything but plugging it in. Same thing with my 2 year old Cannon printer. I am giving the names of each just to elaborate that they we not Acer products or new products. Then I downloaded the Windows 7 upgrade adviser and ran it. This software told me what units I had plugged in that needed to have driver updates done to work correctly with Windows 7. The only one was the printer as the others were done automatically when I plugged in the USB cables. Now back to the computer. I love it. The keyboard is great and mouse pad (almost don't feel like I need the external stuff like I did with my previous laptops). The camera (Crystal eye) is as good as my Logitech external camera and even has wide angle. The microphone quality is good too. The dolby home theatre is better than anything I have ever had on other Laptops but I still prefer the external speakers. The I5 Dual Core speed is tremendous and all my programs open and close very quickly. I have only had this for two weeks but have enjoyed it every day. And I gotta say after having XP Pro, the Vista Ultimate (which I did not like but struggled through) I really so far am very impressed with Windows 7.

Picked up nearly the same model at Costco for $599 after discount. Only difference is a 320GB drive instead of the 500GB drive. Seems like fairly solid construction. Keyboard is quiet. Track pad is a tad sensitive but I've adjusted how I use the pad with my fingers. There is a button to shut the pad off should you decide to use a mouse. Processor is fast, and, as advertised, fires up to 2.5GHz+ when doing processor intensive things. Did run a few low graphics intensive games and it did a fairly admirable job, though definitely not on high settings. Wireless-n has been solid. No mute button on the console, which is something I like, but not a big deal. Screen is bright - brighter than expected - though does have a low viewing angle from the top - and the screen doesn't tilt as far back as my old Dell laptop did. So you really have to be pretty square in front of it. I'm not a huge fan of the outer blue plastic, but, hey, I don't look at the back of the screen when I'm using it. The matte finish on the touchpad and handrest is smart (not like the HP's which show fingerprints VERY easily). Overall, great value. Time will tell on durability (I'm hoping for 1.5-2yrs).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Laptop with great price, March 25, 2010

This review is from: Acer AS5740-6025 15.6-Inch Laptop (Blue) (Personal Computers)
I received this laptop a few days ago, it was packed well and arrived safely. The set up was easy, it took maybe two hours to create three recovery discs. Well, no one like to spend time on it but you have to, and almost every computer need you to burn your own recovery discs now days.
Screen was bright and clear, HD indeed. Processor is super fast, plus higher front bus speed and 4GB DDR3 RAM. The 500GB HD is one of the biggest all laptops featured. It runs cool, and not much junk softwear as other laptop.
I have compared all different brand, and narrow down to Asus and Acer (my wife has a Asus with T6600 processor, it runs fast and cool), Asus has two years warrantee, Acer only one year, but Acer has a faster processor and more solid key board. It's the best deal on the market now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great laptop...best value after much research!, April 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer AS5740-6025 15.6-Inch Laptop (Blue) (Personal Computers)
I am very happy with this laptop. This is the 2nd Acer Aspire we have purchased and have 3 Acer laptops in our house now. If we needed another, I would buy this exact one again. Researched many, almost stayed loyal to sony vaio (prior laptop), but this laptop was more bang for the buck...and it hasn't dissappointed.

Negatives:
-Battery life is not great. This is not a laptop for a coast to coast flight (US) but that's what a Kingle/iPad is for.
-Speakers arent great: i use tiny HP speakers at my desk and earphones when not...not a big issue for me.
-Touchpad is good enough...i use a wireless mouse though.

Postives (far outweigh negatives):
-500GB, 4GB RAM for a little over $600 (Mar 2010 price).
-Great graphics/screen...it can be tough in direct sun, but I use it outside often.
-Fast processing, great keyboard, pretty light for a 15.6" laptop.
-4 USB ports, HDMI port to stream movies to TV, button to turn touchpad off....and a lot more.

SUMMARY: Very happy with this purchase. I order from Amazon frequently and have always been happy. I recommend this laptop and Amazon.

Just received. Amazon service as usual, perfect. My expectations were high and I have not been disapointed. Core i5 processor is fast. Screen is glossy but beautiful. Keyboard is excellent. Everything works. First experience with Windows 7; looks good, nothing to complain about it. Time will tell, but this seems to be a bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving this Laptop! A great product., June 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer AS5740-6025 15.6-Inch Laptop (Blue) (Personal Computers)
This laptop has been running like a dream for me.

I initially set out for a laptop I could use for school and some code development in a Virtual Machine environment. This laptop has easily reached that mark. I am using it for all the engineering programs I need to install on here like Matlab, Visual Studios, and Mathematica to name a few. Along with those programs, I am using other intensive programs like Photoshop CS5 and iTunes. I can run Photoshop CS5, a Chrome browser with 10-12+ tabs open, and iTunes with ease. I have not tried running a Virtual Machine with Ubuntu 10.04 x64 along with all those other programs running, but I have tried running the VM with the 10-12+ tabs open and it still runs that with ease.

What I am overall trying to get at is that this computer can handle anything a general everyday user would want to do. It can also handle the likes of a Computer Engineer wanting to do some side code development along in a Virtual Machine along with having a great laptop for college classes that isn't too heavy. Now obviously this laptop isn't the lightest laptop out there. If you want a light laptop, you should get a netbook.

Toshiba has pretty good netbooks and if you don't really care too much about the specs of the computer,.then HP has new Mini 10s that have lots of cute colors. MSI also has great netbooks, but I digress ...

Next, I will address the graphics card for all the kids who still have lots of free time to play computer games. I have Steam installed on this computer. I was able to download and install Team Fortress 2 (which for those who do not know, is a First Person Shooter game). I was also able to run that on my laptop. It can run on basic settings with some lag. I put all the settings to their lowest level making the terrain not that pretty, but it can play with no lag on those low settings. So you can play video games on this laptop as well but certainly not at the highest graphics settings ... probably not even the standard settings if your life in the game depends on not lagging. Now, on the lowest settings, this laptop can handle and will run smoothly. I have never played WoW and never plan to so I can't tell you how those kind of MMORPGs would run on this laptop but I can imagine that they will run with ease on this laptop since I've seen it run on other laptops that pale in comparison to this laptop. Now that being said, this really isn't a gaming laptop. If you want a gaming laptop with a better processor, be prepared to spend more money. I saw a laptop from Asus that had all the same specs (i5 processor 2.26 ghz, 500gig HDD, 4GB memory ...) but the only difference was the processor was better for gaming and the price jumped up around 250-300 dollars. Not worth it in my mind but to each their own.

As for battery life, for the summer session that I have been using this laptop with so far, I unplug it at about 850AM to catch the bus to class at around 9 and start my first class at 930 and that goes to 10:45. I use my laptop looking at powerpoint slides throughout the whole class. I then go straight to my next class and that goes from 11-12:15 and when that point is reached, the battery is at around 20%. I have this with the settings on power saver. So the battery life is about 3.5 hours - 4 hours. This works perfectly for my needs. Others may need more and may need less. If more is really needed, then buying an extra battery is an option or bringing your charger along is also an option. I believe they also have batteries that have even more capacity if you need that.

I have Windows 7 x64 installed on this laptop (since that is what came with it and what I wanted anyways) and it boots with ease.

I also love 4 USB ports that are on the laptop along with the HDMI hook up and a VGA monitor hook up. It does however lack the DVI hook up.

One MINOR quirk that was strange to me (but I figured it was still worth mentioning) about this and I believe (but I am not entirely sure) other Acer laptops is the fact that if the sound is on and you plug in or unplug your power, the laptop makes a rather loud system beep sound. This definitely caught me off guard when I first started using the computer. This would be okay if there was a way to disable this. However, this is not the case because it is not an option anywhere. I even googled to see if it could be disabled but it cannot. The only way to make it not beep is if you mute the sound when you unplug or plug back in the power. This is obviously hardly worth complaining about compared to the amount of power and versatility I have received from purchasing this laptop.

So let me wrap this up by saying that this laptop was a great investment for me and allows me to do everything from development to school work to some gaming all in a one mobile powerhouse. I got this laptop for a great discount of $600.00 and I consider that practically a steal on my part. This laptop is easily worth its cost and blows away competitor prices like HP having a laptop with the same specs for around $1,000.00. So go for it with this laptop. You won't be disappointed.

I needed a PC that could handle all of my basic computer needs and be able to also handle my multimedia needs. The PC has fantastic features. 4 USB inputs, an i5 core processor, HDMI & VGA connections and a full keyboard. The laptop is great. It is a bit bulky and since it only has a 720p resolution I cannot fully utilize the full screen of my 1080p HDTV. These features are the only reason that I did not give this laptop a 5 star rating.

The computer is fast, the keyboard is fine, ample memory space, the price was good. But the touchpad is considerably less responsive than anything else I've ever used. Perhaps this is a problem just for my model and maybe I should have sent it back to Amazon, but it's hard to know. Anyway, I'm trying to get used to it, though this frequently means having to touch the pad twice when once should have sufficed.
