Lots of Computer for a Little Price,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer Aspire AS5741-5763 15.6" Laptop (2.26 GHz Intel Core i3-350M Mobile Processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, Super-Multi Drive, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) Mesh Black (Personal Computers)
I ordered this laptop on 5/25, after reading good reviews on Newegg and CNet. I received it on 5/26 (One Day Shipping through Amazon Prime). My initial impressions were that, although the exterior leaves something to be desired (it's very plain and functional-looking), the computer seems very sturdy and well-built. The keyboard is full sized and easy to type on. The touchpad is a nice size, although to left/right click, you have to apply a good amount of pressure, which takes some getting used to. The screen quality is good, although it's very shiny, so you have to have it at the right angle or else it's reflects way too much light.
I had a problem at first with the computer freezing on startup, which was a little frustrating. However, once I uninstalled McAfee and other bloatware, the problem was resolved. I recommend getting rid of these programs before attempting to download other programs. Without them, it runs like a dream. It's a little on the heavy side, due to its large size. However, compared to other laptops this size, it's a reasonable weight. It'd only be a problem if you had to haul it around all day, but it would be comfortable to carry to or from class or work. The large screen would be perfect for watching movies or streamed video, although the speakers sound a little bit tinny. Overall, I am very pleased with this laptop. I use it mainly for watching movies, surfing the internet, and writing papers, but I think it'd be able to handle more intense activities, like gaming. Spec-wise, it's comparable to machines that cost twice as much. The built-in webcam and HD components are a nice touch. I think it'd be perfect for the first-time college student or home user, even if it doesn't look as slick as other computers. I'd give it 5 stars if it wasn't for the freezing issue. That's more of a problem with Windows than a problem with the laptop itself, though.

I was in the middle of changing jobs when my home laptop suffered a fatal accident (apparently computers don't like beer). Since I knew that I would probably receive a company laptop when I started my new job I just wanted something to hold me over. This computer was exactly what I was looking for.
Each time that I go computer shopping I am always amazed at how much the top-of-lines cost but equally surprised by the lower-end computers. Five to six hundred dollars can buy you a pretty nice machine these days. I wanted something with a fairly big, bright screen (as I've aged it seems as though print gets smaller and smaller), decent capacity hard drive and fast enough for web browsing and streaming video. I've had this one for over a month and I am very happy with it. However, I have one negative observation (I won't call it a complaint since I don't expect perfection at this price): the screen is bright, sharp and has great definition, but it also has a very limited viewing angle. Looking at it straight on is fine, tilting the screen back is still good, but if it is tilted forward just a little it darkens so much I can't use it. This is a problem only when I am watching Netflix and lean forward in my chair. Other than that it's just what I was looking for. I will probably give to one of my children (I have 6) as soon as I replace it. This would make a good all-around high school or college computer. Four stars!

I AM ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED WITH THIS LITTLE THING.,
This review is from: Acer Aspire AS5741-5763 15.6" Laptop (2.26 GHz Intel Core i3-350M Mobile Processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, Super-Multi Drive, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) Mesh Black (Personal Computers)
Computers are not my "thing" but in order to survive in my little world I have had to adjust. I did this a number of years ago and now, to my utter surprise (and I must admit, dismay), I find I cannot live without one...go figure.
Anyway, our grandson, whom we have raised all these years, will be leaving for college in the very near future and of course simply has to have his own computer to haul around with him. I have two lap tops myself plus my desk top, but one of the lap tops is in constant use for my work and the other I found could not stand a drop of only twenty feet down some stairs, again...go figure. Anyway, I was shocked when I first started shopping for a computer for the young lad as to the price of some of these things. I then stumbled across this Acre Aspire and as my wife and I both have Acre desk top computers which we have been delighted with, I thought...well, why not...at least I can afford the thing. It must be noted that I am on the cheap side, not really a skinflint, but certainly prudent. Before I turned this thing over to the boy I felt I needed to give it a try, more for the novelty of playing with a new toy than anything else. I must admit that I am completely impressed. This machine is heavier than my other two lap tops but since this is a 6'3" 200 pound young man who will be playing football at school, I figured the weight would matter little. I am a feeble old man and I really had no problems with in lugging it around to my nursing homes. I have found this computer to be absolutely ideal for watching movies on, doing my reports for my work, which by the way are quite similar in format and length to any papers he might be doing in college, and this computer is more than fast enough to web browse. The screen gives a wonderful picture and is more than large enough for his use. All in all I have absolutely no complaints about this computer. The price is extremely attractive as far as I am concerned. As a matter of fact, when my old lap top finally goes belly up, I plan to go with the 18.4 inch screen for myself. I would note though, and this is not a complaint as far as I am concerned, that the sound is a bit on the tinnish side. This is a matter of little moment when you consider the price of this thing. It is so nice to be able to spend a relatively smaller amount of money and be completely satisfied with something these days. Don Blankenship The Ozarks

Solid, functional laptop that really performs,

I picked this up at one of the office supply stores, because it was on sale. I'd been considering a Toshiba, which was the same price here on Amazon, but after I got to use this one at the store I changed my mind.
The laptop has 3 USB ports, and an HDMI port, as well as a card reader. It's got B/G/N wireless, and a dual-layer DVD Super Drive. The Intel Core i3 is faster than I needed, but the price was right. The 320GB hdd is fast and quiet, and the 4GB of RAM is more than adequate. The webcam is fine for video chatting, and the Acer software works great for capturing snaps and short videos. It works well with Skype and Google Talk. I use the laptop for web browsing, Open Office documents, writing, and light gaming. It hasn't had any problems with anything I've asked it to do. There have been no pauses or hiccups. It simply works. I spend about three hours a day typing, and the keyboard on this is one of the best keyboards I've ever used. I'm typing this review on a Microsoft keyboard on my desktop PC, and the laptop keyboard is far better than this one. It's quiet, and the keys have just the right amount of travel and no pesky side-to-side motion. There is a numeric keypad on the right, which I have no use for, but if you've got a need, it's there. It doesn't get in the way if you don't use it. The exterior of the case has a textured finish which doesn't show fingerprints. The case is plastic, of course, but it feels sturdy enough. I doubt it would survive a fall onto concrete, but for life in a backpack it should be great. The touchpad is responsive. I had to go into Control Panel and turn the sensitivity all the way up, but that's pretty typical for the way I use touchpads. The button is easy to press, and is quiet. There's a function-key for disabling the trackpad is you're using an external mouse, which is great if you do a lot of typing and your wrists have a habit of moving the cursor around. Overall, it's a quiet machine. I used the Prime95 test to stress the CPU a bit, and I was able to make the fan come on, but even then it's not annoying or overly loud. The hard drive is also quiet. The speakers are a bit underpowered, even when turned all the way up. It's fine if it's a quiet room, but on the train I can barely hear the sounds. But, if I'm listening to music, I'm using headphones anyway, so it's fine. There are headphones and microphone ports on the left side, right at the front. Very convenient. The laptop does come with a bit of bloatware on it. MS-Office trial, Works, etc. It took about 2 hours to get everything removed and cleaned up. But, since that stuff keeps the prices low, I don't mind. I think it's a worthwhile investment to remove it, though. Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium is fine for what it is. I would like to point out that this machine will play Star Craft II. The graphics options all need to be on "low" but game play is quite smooth. I'm not a hardcore gamer. I probably play less than six hours a month, but I wanted to see if this machine could handle the load, and it does just fine. Overall, I'm pleased. This is my second Acer product, and based on my experiences, it will not be my last.

I'll start with my experience. I have been working with and on computers for 15 years and have been in the IT industry for the past 5. In the past I have had desktops and laptops from compaq, dell, HP, and toshiba.
Acer as a brand was never in my spotlight. I've been wary of their quality since they were willing to purchase such an awful company as emachines. However, after a month of research or so, I decided to give them a try based on specs, price, and a demo machine in an office store. I am quite pleased so far with this laptop. We've had it a little over a month. After about 10 minutes of bloatware removal, which is actually not bad, I was ready to get it set up to my liking. I was easily able to add my home wireless network, my work wireless and my school wireless w/o any problems. The nic speed seems really good, transferring my files from my desktop (around 10-15 gb) took very little time (maybe an hour). Processing speed is decent for a lower end. Video download and playback work well, including streaming from the laptop to my PS3 using PlayOn. Video card is very good. Speakers are too quiet though, even for a laptop. This laptop is light and sleek. The matte finish does hold a few fingerprints but many many less than the glossy finish on most models. Overall I think this was a wonderful choice and I'm very happy with my decision so far. My wife even likes it and she hates computers. Amazon had the cheapest price out of the 8-10 stores I checked. For this price I think I made a great choice. If i do happen to find any faults I will be sure to update/create a new review.

4 gigs of RAM - runs very nicely. Keyboard feels a little cheap, but that is my only complaint. For less then an iPad, you really get a lot more.

I bought this laptop for my brother now that he is starting college, love the numeric keys included in the keyboard. So far the performance is great, quick turn on and turn off. For the specs we were looking for this was an excelent deal.

Did a lot of review reading before making my purchase. I decided on the core i3 as I figured it would be a faster processor. So far so good and I love it! I have not had any problems though still getting used to the mouse pad. I would suggest this purchase to anyone!

I bought this for my wife yesterday for a birthday gift, and so far so good. Light, fast, and good battery life only $499.00 at Office Max until 7-17-10. I used the WiFi and a usb powered cooling pad for half the time and got about 3 Hrs, so maybe 4 Hrs without a cooling fan on and power saver mode on. FYI, I used the cooling fan because my wife's lap pad is warped, bad for cooling, the laptop itself is very silent, only noticeable sound is the fan when it got warm, I loaded her programs and files on it and it took about 4 hours. For the specs it is very much worth $500. Amazon is normally very competitive, not so much this week on the model compared to my local Office Max.

Unpleasant Experience,

I purchased this laptop not too long after it came out. At just over 1 year, when everything on the warranty conveniently expires, the hard drive started having boot issues and the DVD drive flat out stopped working. It also started overheating and randomly shutting down and there were some other quirks. The laptop has never been dropped, remotely abused or had anything spilled on it. Now here's where it gets fun. You can't actually talk to a live person at Acer if you're "out of the warranty period". Instead you get to do things by email, which is as fun as it sounds. You'll deal with multiple people, all working from the same script. Eventually you'll figure out that in the case of a hard drive replacement to reinstall the OS you have to purchase a Recovery Pack from the maker of the inferior product, so that you can fix the inferior product. In my case you will also find that one of the Recovery disks does not work, at which point you will re-enter customer service hell. I will never touch another ACER product. This good deal gets a lot less good once you start paying for repairs. |
