This is my review after two weeks of use. I am a database developer; I work with Sql server 2005 client tools, virtual box, MS office, VPNs and other development recourses. In general terms, this computer has enough speed and processing capabilities to perform a good job.

I could summarize the pros and cons of this machine in this way:

Pros:
* Intel I3 is fast enough to perform programming work. Very good in multitasking.
* 4G ram gives you a very good program execution with fast access to resources.
* 500GB of storage is great for pictures and work documents.
* EXCELENT display (HD with Led).
* Good image quality for the built-in web cam.
* Quiet enough (fan and hard drive).
* Over 4 hours battery (six cells), NICE!.

Cons:
* The worst thing of this machine is its SOUND. Only one mono speaker is SAD.
* The keyboard seems to be weak. I am afraid that in the short term it could fail.
* The mouse smart-pad should be located one inch more to the right side to avoid accidental touches.
* You must push hard to plug in something in the USB ports.

Funny note: I bought this laptop in Amazon and some software from Ebay was found installed in it from factory!!.

Note for international buyers. This laptop will be sent to your country within a huge box!, then if your local carrier charges you for volume weight, you could be overcharged.

I needed a new computer, but I didn't want to spend more than $500 if I could help it. On sale, this computer met that criteria and had the best features of any sub-$500 laptop I could find (and I looked at a lot). The only other laptop I could find with similar features for the price was from MSI, and though I've heard good things about MSI I've owned other Acer products over the years and they've been good to me, so I went with this one. FYI, Acer owns both Gateway and eMachines.

Most sub-$500 notebooks don't have great processors. This one comes with a dual-core I3 with two hyperthreads per core, meaning it can run four tasks at one time (cheaper processors lack hyperthreading and can only run one task per core). I was a little worried about the Intel HD graphics (though the new HD chip is supposedly much better than the old GMA 4500MHD), but so far it has performed well. I would have preferred the Radeon HD 4250 or similar chip, but these all come with AMD processors in this price range and I felt the I3-380M was significantly better than the AMD chips I was seeing. I also wanted at least 4GB of memory and a 500MB hard drive, and many cheaper notebooks skimp on one or the other. Running Windows 7 with less than 4GB can be an excercise in frustration and is not recommended.

The screen is good, though it's sensitive to viewing angle. The DVD drive is noisy, as are most laptop DVD drives. No Blue-Ray or lightscribe. You have to write out your own recovery disks (4 DVDs worth). I like the keyboard and the touchpad is good (unlike other reviewers, I don't mind the placement). Having three USB ports has been useful (and I don't find them hard to plug things into). I wanted both HDMI and VGA output on my laptop (for presentations) and this computer has them.

Just got mine in Monday, and it operates just fine. However, the keys are flat, not concave, and there are no bumps on the J and F keys, so this is taking some getting used to while typing. I'm making more mistakes than I usually do, but I think after some practice, this shouldn't be too much of a problem...and besides, it's not like I have a job where my typing accuracy is important lol

This laptop was great. Build quality is awesome. I liked the texture of the casing and the feel of the keys. Numeric key pad is a plus and the 6 cell battery was good for over 5 hrs for me. Only thing was...after about 3 weeks of use, the laptop would make a high pitched noise every time it went to sleep. Then the speaker would chime in and out with an intermittent "hissing" sound. I'm returning it today, luckily I'm still in the 30 day window. I want the same one, but will probably look for a different due to the issue. Seems like the high pitched noise is common for all Acer laptops...based on my research. Google it.

When I first opened the the laptop I noticed that the keyboard was cheap. It didn't have the grooves on the keys and you could barely feel the bumb on F and J. Since it has a number pad the keyboard is a bit tight. If you have long nails or bandages on your finger and you're typing relatively fast, the keys might get caught with your nail or bandaid and get pulled off. The laptop was very fast but the 2nd week I used it, there would be a pop up saying that I couldn't run a Click to Run program. I tried to find the file and it ended up to be the Microsoft Office 2010 that the laptop came with. I don't recommend seting up Microsoft Office because of this pop up. Everytime you do windows update and the computer has to restart, it takes atleast 30 minutes. Then when it starts up it takes another 5 minutes.

I don't recommend pulling off the sticky plastic on the computer because the computers black and it makes it look dirty all the time. The computer gets hot really fast since there's only one air vent. The charger gets really hot too. The plug for the charger is for a 3 hole walljack. You might need a converter if you don't have one of those.

The mouse pad is smooth and not so grippy so that's good, but its moved slightly off the middle of the computer. If you make an account with a password for the computer, start up time is dramatically affect.
