Well its good to know some things NEVER change....
Way back in 2000 I bought my very first computer...it was an acer.....a pc not a laptop but the thing didnt work right from the minute i got it and trying to deal with tech support that A.) spoke NO english and B.) apparently it is their job NOT to help in any way...well i went round and round with tech support for about a week and then sent my husband to the store where i bought it to demand a refund..thankfully they gave it to him and i swore i would never buy an ACER product again. I live in Puerto Rico now and my computer just fried after running for 8 years (not bad) but in the process of trying to get parts to build a new comp i have discovered that computer parts are hard to get here and every computer store here carries only ACER parts...I havent figured out why that is yet but i was actually thinking that since it has been 10 years that ACER has surely improved since then and i was considering buyng one.....thank goodness i came across this site...I'll take my chances with ebay!

I bought my Acer in January of 2008 and I have no major problems with mine, save the occasional thing with the sound driver not loading when booting, or the wifi being very weak. I use mine nearly every day, and just came back from a week long vacation and it worked like a champ. Aside from these minor problems, mine works well. I got rid of the crapware bundled on it, and put on only antivirus, antispyware, and Office XP Professional. A few tweaks, and it boots quickly (remember this is only a celeron 1.8GHz) and does what I want it to, usually watch videos or listen to online radio stations, or some emails.

As for the last reviewer, a coworker bought the same machine as me, and put XP on it. Trust me, this laptop works much better with XP than Vista, especially since it came with only 512MB of ram. When we tried to have Acer send restore discs, they wanted $30 for them. About the same time we got all the drivers loaded, an envelope with the discs arrived from Acer. I guess they felt guilty since they didn't ask my friend to pay for them. So they arent all bad.

Would I buy another Acer? Maybe, but there are so many others out there with just as much to offer.

I bought this laptop 17 months ago and started having problems with it within the first three months of owning it. The first problem was that the disk drive made really strange noises. The second problem was that my battery would not connect correctly. The next thing to go was my screen. At first it would get lines on it and come back and then it would go white. Soon after I started getting a white screen randomly when I would turn it on.
I contacted Acer in May 2008 about the warranty. I was told that I could ship it at my expense to them in Texas and they would review the computer for 48 hours. If they could not duplicate the problem in 48 hours they would send it back to me unfixed. I honestly could not afford to ship my computer to Texas after having just purchased it, espeically not knowing if it would be fixed or not. They told me not to send the battery to lighten the load, but the battery was part of the problem. I asked them to send me a shipping label since it was under warranty but they refused. Of course, with each person I spoke to I was told something different about what the problems may or may not have been.
Now the warranty is up (which never helped me in the first place since I could not pay to ship it) and I am stuck with a computer that doesn't work. The disk drive is completely broken (I tried reinstalling it per Acer customer service) but I can see where something is torn inside so installation had nothing to do with it. I am 100% disappointed in Acer and am now computer shopping again so that I will be able to use the computer for teaching in August.
I will not be buying an Acer and would encourage you to stay away as well!
