This review is from: Acer Aspire One AO751h-1893 11.6-Inch Black Netbook - 8 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers)
My options were to get either a deal netbook or one that fits the minimal criteria.
I was one of the millions that Amazon disappointed by cancelling my HP mini order due to their mistake posting a very low price. But that is a different review.
So since the deal was gone I focused on what I wanted for features.

* I wanted at least a 10" widescreen display the Acer Aspire One AO751h-1893 has an 11.6" and the + is that it is a very high resolution screen. Fantastic is a good adjective to describe it.
* I wanted built in Bluetooth, easy to engage with two options one is the easy button next to the Wi-Fi and the second is the F3 option when holding down the fn button.
* I wanted the extended battery life. 8+ hours even more if I work in power saver mode (but it dims down too much, so for the sake of my eyes I will rarely use this option) even though the Ac power adapter is small after the first few days of use I stopped caring it because the battery life is so good. What I did not realize is that the extended life battery also extends the battery itself making it bulker than the photo. The photo shows a flush fitting battery if you order this expect an extended size.
* I wanted at least a 120 GB hard drive, this has 250 GB
* I wanted the 2 GB RAM, this allows Vista to operate properly and not slow down the system. The + is that it comes with Vista basic, saves me the trouble of installing it. But expect when connecting to the internet for the first time that the updates to the operating system and to the software to be time consuming.
* I wanted to pay less than $400 I got to pay $450 can't always get what you want! But over all I am very happy with my purchase. I have owned and used this computer for two weeks, I usually use an item a month before I review it, but since this computer is so light weight and portable I have taken it every were and used it enough so I could recommend it.

What I experienced using my Acer Aspire One AO751h-1893:

* The Atom processor is great it does not heat up and it is super quite. Once I removed all the junk that is preinstalled on the computer (most computer not just this) it is fast. I preferred the Atom N270 or N280 but this Atom Z520 is just fine. I have not owned either N Atom so I can not give my opinion about performance difference.
* The key board is comfortable to use and the touch pad is nice. (could be a few mm wider to allow the full benefit of the Flick, Pinch and Circular features)

It would have been nice to have an access button to the web cam. Like I mentioned earlier the Bluetooth has two easy access buttons but the web cam has none (that I have detected)
In conclusion this netbook looks and feels rugged and sturdy the screen is glossy so expect a fantastic picture and the battery life is great so you'll use it a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better then I expected it to be!! Vista Home basic is OK, August 28, 2009
This review is from: Acer Aspire One AO751h-1893 11.6-Inch Black Netbook - 8 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers)
This is my first NETBOOK, all my other computers are desktop and homebuilt. The price for the Acer was good and is
just about right for what you get. 2 gig of ram, 250 gig hd and a almost full size keyboard. The junk free software was removed - the first time on line - it did take a while for VISTA to upgrade but I left the NETBOOK plugged into AC power and had no problems. Note: do charge the battery prior to first use. Vista is not my OS of choice, I prefer XP Home Media Edition but this VISTA home basic is not bad nor does it seem to slow up the NETBOOK. True on bootup it is slow but it is a NETBOOK with a 1.3 cpu for goodness sake (smile)... over all I give it FIVE STARS with the note that the keyboard is just a wee bit tight for my BIG FINGERS! Take care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just get rid of Vista for XP or Linux and it is an AWSOME netbook., September 16, 2009

Acer is under the obligation to put Vista due to licensing in machines "capable" of running vista. At 2GB ram, it is "possible" to run Vista, but Vista is a dog in almost any machine! particularly with all its bloatware and excessive service packs and security "band aids" + resident antivirus.

YES, the Acer' processor is only 1.33mhz which is not "powerful" per se but the memory more than makes up for it in XP and Linux. There is no other full size keyboard netbook with a 6 cell battery for the price. I tried the Toshiba "9 hour" netbook, but the keyboard was too small, the display way 10" vs. 11", and really, the processor at 1.6mhz is not much of an advantage over Acer's 1.33mhz. I happily surf the net, do Skype, Word, XL and even watched an episode of 24 streamed[...] with no issues.....any heavy powerpoints I leave to a full power notebook or desktop, but for most daily applications, it works just fine!

I suggest you do this to get the best performance and great user experiece........From the wizard, generate the "recovery disks" when you get the machine, should you want to put everything back to factory. Get a copy of XP home, Partition the 250gb drive into half so you may house both Linux and XP.....install XP first in the 125gb partition (you can download the drivers), then go to the UBUNTU site ([...]) and get the netbook tweaked version of desktop ver 9......not only does it come with all the "office" (as in MS office) stuff and most anything you'l need, it is EASY TO USE (i.e. it mimics windows operations, auto-installs, auto detects, auto-does, even the wireless network detection, etc. everything).....and you'l find yourself using windows less and less in favor of Ubuntu (which is a version of debian Linux, but extremely user friendly, particularly to the Windows user).

It does not get hot like a traditional notebook, it weight little, the battery lasts, the graphics are good......what else can I say? IT IS AWESOME what they've done with this netbook.

I returned this product and suffered the 15% restocking fee because I found it fell short of my minimum requirements. For internet access, word processing and other office like applications this netbook was fine, The single biggest shortfall for me was the netbooks inability to play video in an acceptable fashion. I was able to transfer various DVD movies in the original VOB format as well as DivX and AVI, but the playback was terrible (jerky, video/audio sync issues, etc). The only way I found to achieve acceptable playback rate was to reduce the image size which resulted in lower image quality. I suspect the limited video memory and slow processor were the main culprits. I ended up getting an 14" ACER Timeline with the SU3500 processor which satisfies my video/movie requirement. Bottom line,if you want a small, light computer with long battery life and only need to run office type applications this netbook is very nice. The screen is reasonably sized, the keyboard is comfortable, the processor speed, harddisk size and memory are adequate. If, on the otherhand, you want to have more graphics or video capability, I would suggest different option.

This is my first "laptop" computer. I'm waiting for my desktop to be totally outdated before I take the full plunge for a full scale laptop. This was purchased so my wife and I were not tethered to the office when we wanted to surf the web. Also the possibility exists this will be used in the near future for on-site programming of alarm systems. Large hard drives and lots of memory is not necessary for either task. Portability and battery life were of the most importance. For that this has delivered. I have been able to get approximately 7 hours out of the battery on the "balanced" setting. Weight is terrific. I do wish it had a wee bit more processing power, but it is what it is. I had an issue with crashing when it was left in sleep mode for a few hours, I believe it was the Bluetooth which was causing this. After I disabled it, no more problems. I would recommend this machine to friends who want a highly portable machine for basic applications.

4.0 out of 5 stars Alright for the money, August 25, 2009
This review is from: Acer Aspire One AO751h-1893 11.6-Inch Black Netbook - 8 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers)
Right out of the box this laptop kinda sucked. The video was choppy and computer was slow. I installed XP and updated the graphics card and now its all good. I only get about 6.5 hours battery time but I always run it on high preformance(anything else and its unbearably slow). If I had to buy another laptop I would go with a faster processer; but im not gonna return this one. Overall I am happy with this laptop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Netbook with VIsta Basic!!!, October 1, 2009
This review is from: Acer Aspire One AO751h-1893 11.6-Inch Black Netbook - 8 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers)
I have had this computer for more than two months and have enjoyed it thoroughly. After you delete the package software that comes with it, it runs smoothly and with few hitches.

On the Plus Side:

1. Battery life: 7-8 hours
2. Keyboard is large and easy to type on
3. Mobility: easy to carry and very light: about 1
kilo(2lbs.)
4. Atom processors: though they are slow on boot up they are very efficient and do not overheat. I have had Open Office running with 5 docs open, Firefox open to several webpages, Foxit reader, Faststone, Winamp, and Skype running at the same time with no problem.

5. Vista Basic runs well: Despite the reviews that say it does not. I find that most of those people already expect Vista to run poorly and have never used it very much. I find the speed good for a netbook that is not very powerful.

On the slightly Negative side:

1. Videos could be better: I have seen videos on You Tube with no problem: however, some of the streaming vids do have a delay on them. NB: I do not use this netbook for videos and do not see the point of watching a video on such a small screen. That said, I have watched a few movies on it and it played them decently enough.

2. Speaker Volume: Although adequate, it would be better to have slightly louder speaker volume.

General Use: I have been impressed with this netbook. Although not perfect, The battery life, lightness, keyboard and HD space far out way any negative factors in my opinion. Again, I think the slower processor is actually an advantage. Vista Basic runs well and If you are a normal user of Docs, Surfing, Music, and Skyping this should be a great computer for you.

NB: IF you hate Vista, are a Mac person, Linux person, Gamer, or a heavy video user this Acer netbook Is NOT for you.

Tips:

1. Dump the Junk Software
2. Turn off Blue Tooth. It drains the battery and slows down the computer
3. Avast AV runs well on it. So no problem to install an AV.
4. Us in balanced mode or Power saver mode to help extend the battery life.

2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible Performance, October 23, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer Aspire One AO751h-1893 11.6-Inch Black Netbook - 8 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers)
HI y'all
I've bought this netbook in order to substitute my small(8.9) screen Acer Aspire One, that had 1 giga Ram and atom n270 (that buy the way was a great computer).
Unfortunatelly when I bought this one I have impressed by hard drive size and RAM availability (2gb) and screen size (11.6''), and them I committed the worst mistake of my computer/Laptop/etbook life I didn't check the processor performance.
Accordling with INTEL this processor should be for mobile devices not for a notbook like device. Windows system performance is 1.9 the lowest I saw with Vista devices.
And by the way the netbook shouldn't come with vista, maybe a XP Home edition, could change my perception.
Don't buy it, if don't plain to change the OS.
Regards
PO

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Value for Money, October 12, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer Aspire One AO751h-1893 11.6-Inch Black Netbook - 8 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers)
This is nice bundle of value for money. I had very good experience with battery life, general responsiveness. I only had few qualms like 1) full screen movies from [...]were very snapshot-like, while from other sites such youtube or movies directly played from harddisk played perfectly. Voice is that not that loud but then you would almost always be using a headphones for netbooks anyway.

Final verdict is I like it and would recommend it as value for money product.

4.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars if it came with Windows XP, September 30, 2009
This review is from: Acer Aspire One AO751h-1893 11.6-Inch Black Netbook - 8 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers)
Finally a laptop that can be taken on long airplane journeys. It is small enough to fit on your lap, the battery lasts almost seven hours (with Bluetooth & WLAN off) and the display is just large enough to be convenient.
The CPU is of course not very powerful and if you happen to work with large Excel tables and a lot of formulas and macros the difference to a more powerful computer will be felt. But when I buy a laptop like this I know beforehand that not too much should be expected.
The design is sleek and durable and the laptop has everything one needs for travel: WLAN, Bluetooth, Webcam. To distinguish itself from the netbook category it comes with a higher resolution 11.6" screen, 2GByte RAM and a 250GByte SATA harddisk. No upgrades needed after purchase.

And now for the downside: This netbook has Windows Vista basic installed and a lot of other software that either slows down the system or starts asking for money after a few days. Even Google desktop search was installed! With such a configuration the computer becomes almost unusable. I had to buy an external CDROM drive (which are now considerably cheap) and install Windows XP.
With this small modification I am now completely happy with this laptop!

Be careful when you select your Acer laptop. Some come with only a 3 cell battery or a smaller harddisk or no bluetooth!
