5.0 out of 5 stars Best Laptop EVER!, February 12, 2010
By
This review is from: Acer Aspire AS5740-5780 Laptop - Intel Core i3-330M 2.13GHz / 15.6" LCD / 4GB DDR3 Memory / 250GB HD / 8x DVD Super Multi Drive / HDMI Port / 802.11b/g/Draft-N / Built-in Webcam / Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) (Personal Computers)
Ok, I admit to being a techno junkie. I currently own five working laptops, and have bought (God only knows) how many desktops since the very first ones came out. I own HP, Gateway, Dell, Compaq, and two Acers. Without a doubt, Acer is on its way to becoming king of the laptop/netbook market! They produce a remarkable product at an extremely competitive price. I tested out every laptop at Office Depot, before buying this one for only $499. What sold me on this model was the incredibly brilliant screen and the amazing audio output with certified Dolby surround sound. It doesn't sound exactly like a home theater, but it's a vast improvement. Laptops are notorious for low volume and poor sound quality, so this model blew me away in a side-by-side comparison with other machines. I absolutely love Windows 7. The demo on the computer makes it easy to learn the new features, and lots of fun to play with. This machine is smoking fast, has an attractive design, and a wonderful multigesture touchpad. The ease with which you can enlarge text is a great convenience. I would have prefered a smaller, lighter model without the numeric keypad, but you can't have it all, so I sacrificed small size for what you get in this machine. (Anyways, I already own the Acer Aspire netbook.) And this screen size and aspect ratio is great for watching movies. Probably the biggest con with this machine is the somewhat poor battery life, but again, you can't have everything for such a low price, so I just keep it plugged in most of the time. Overall, it's the most enjoyable laptop I have ever owned.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice laptop at a good price, February 11, 2010

Bought it two days ago from OfficeDepot at 465 with bing cashback. Nice price with the new core i3. Very good dislpay and everything works as promised. Windows 7 is a charm but still takes a while to know how go around. Don't really like the 16:9 ratio format since it looks clumsy and way bigger than the old format, but it will be difficult to beat the trend. I rated this one one notch up from the old Acer Aspire 5630 I have owned for 3 years. The sound is better, screen is top notch, setup is easy and webcam is decent. The keyboard feels pretty good and the number pad is a nice addition - thanks to the new 16:9 format. The touch pad is nicely laid out and the buttons are properly designed with the right amount of resistance. The 250 GB disk size may be small for some, but I am thinking of adding a network drive anyway so it won't be an issue. The abgn wifi is good and don't drop signal as the my previous Acer. The moemory is upgradable to 8 GB and it comes with one HDMI port. Overall, everything is nicely designed. I would give it a five star if bluetooth is also included.

This review is from: Acer Aspire AS5740-5780 Laptop - Intel Core i3-330M 2.13GHz / 15.6" LCD / 4GB DDR3 Memory / 250GB HD / 8x DVD Super Multi Drive / HDMI Port / 802.11b/g/Draft-N / Built-in Webcam / Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) (Personal Computers)
I bought this computer about 2 months ago. I know nothing about the technical side of things but am a heavy user (I also use computers frequently) for correspondence, spreadsheets, graphics, and Internet.

PROS: We like this computer. Great screen, excellent for watching movies (thank you Netflix), and reasonably light.

CONS: They keyboard isn't reliable for the kind of typing I do (hunt and smash), the wide-screen format leaves me cold, and battery life could be better.

Overall, a good value for the price.

Best of all, when I had a problem this morning I called the 800 number, they answered promptly, I told them my serial number and described the problem. They told me how to fix it, and it works. Given previous interminable waits and runarounds from Dell and others, I'm pleasantly surprised.

I'll buy another ACER when the time comes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceeded my expectations!, February 9, 2010

This review is from: Acer Aspire AS5740-5780 Laptop - Intel Core i3-330M 2.13GHz / 15.6" LCD / 4GB DDR3 Memory / 250GB HD / 8x DVD Super Multi Drive / HDMI Port / 802.11b/g/Draft-N / Built-in Webcam / Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) (Personal Computers)
This is my first laptop and I did my research before buying it. I would normally never go for anything besides HP Computers but Quality over Quantity but I realized Acer is the number one best seller in Europe and manufacturer in the world. Which is why you can get not only great quantity such as: Intel Core i3-330M 2.13GHz which is the newest processor to this day so you wont be behind in a couple of years just up to date, 4GB DDR3, 320GB HDD, DVDRW, AND the new and improved Windows 7 Home Premium. You also get Quality ! and because they sell so much of their products this is why they can afford to sell such Great Qualities at such a good price not because they suck but because they're just that good and trying to reach America which they will so take advantage of this opportunity while the price is right lol The only con I would have with this product is the battery life but it has so much going on and its so fast but its still a good battery life I rather have a fast computer with less battery life then a slow computer with longer battery life. But anyways besides all this it is an amazing laptop!

P.S. As if that wasn't enough it also has HDMI which is a port by which you can connect it to your Television! which is awesome for me n others that have NetFlix because we can watch movies for free on your TV! and and and! the laptop is louder then other laptops but not super loud but it is louder then others because it has Dolby home theater with surround sound built in Yay!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love love love this computer, June 12, 2010

I wasn't sure if the core i3 would be fast enough for me and was thinking about getting one with a core i5 processor but I worried for nothing. I have never had a computer that was faster or more bug free. Or came loaded with less extraneous junk. The only shortcoming is that the sound is just ok. However, the only laptops that had better sound quality were HP, and that is about the only good thing i have to say about HP. DON'T BUY ONE is my advice on those, unless you want something loaded with junk, prone to overheating and burning out the motherboard, and lousy customer service. In fact my less than 3 y.o. HP laptop totally died and rather than give HP $[...] for a new motherboard for a crappy laptop that was nothing but trouble, I spent $[...] and got this one. A screaming deal but I would have been happy with this one if I had paid $800. I'm not sure about the four hour battery life but I got myself a netbook when I need that kind of portability.

In terms of my usage, I usually have [...] running, facebook, several of other websites, outlook, microsoft word, adobe files, and have no problems with speed or performance on this. I do very heavy internet stuff -- much of which involves downloading files from City websites. I also will run google earth and sometimes open up architectural plans (not in AutoCAD but just in pdf) and sometimes I'll have a graphics program open as well. And i'll have two other computers running and even with all that junk going on this one is still the fastest. Love it love it love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flawless as expected!, March 18, 2010
By
This review is from: Acer Aspire AS5740-5780 Laptop - Intel Core i3-330M 2.13GHz / 15.6" LCD / 4GB DDR3 Memory / 250GB HD / 8x DVD Super Multi Drive / HDMI Port / 802.11b/g/Draft-N / Built-in Webcam / Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) (Personal Computers)
I've been an Acer fan for a long time, i bought a giant tower back in 1997 or so and had the computer up until around 2005. Now mind you i kept it out in a room (not using it for a while) for around 4 months or so. Well the case was open and exposed and had, dust, cat hair, moisture, and any other element outside that you could have. So around 2005 or so after leaving it set i decided to boot it up thinking nah, there is no way this thing will work now, well to my joy it booted right UP! Couldn't believe it, so after a few weeks or so the power supply FINALLY went bad after near 9 years, so i rebuilt the whole inside and sold it on ebay for around 500$, with all new parts of course. The from around 2005 till 2009 i owned another Desktop which i took to Texas back and forth, left it in the car in 100 degree heat, rain etc. and it still kept trucking. Now onto this computer.

The new I series Intel processors are great, this processor is equivalent to about a Duo Core 2 processor running at around 2.8ghz(so they say), its extremely fast and i say faster than any of the past intel chips have been. The I5's and I7's are great as well. The built of the pc is typical acer, nice, neat, simple, great key layout(with number pad), the aspect ratio screen of 16.9 may throw some people for a loop but you'll get use to it in time. I didn't buy the PC for games since i already have a PS3 and 360, and PC games just aren't that interesting to me anymore, so i use it for everything else. Its very very light, feels like 4 lbs or so, the wireless is flawless and as soon as i click the button BOOM your on. I am using a Belkin wireless which aren't really know for being good routers but this one picks it right up, i've had about every other type of laptop and tried connecting to it to no avail. A note to a lot of wireless
users, most computers now are coming with Atheros Wireless Adapters which are definitely the best on the marker. Broadcom and Intel pro wireless just stink. The battery life is around 3 1/2 hours depending on what your doing, of course, which is superb. I got this one at office depot on sale for 499 so it was a STEAL. The screen is a beautiful LED/LCD light screen which jumps write out at you and makes even regular low quality downloaded movies look great. The sound is very good, although the dolby digital(which isn't true dolby d) sounds a little strange with metal/rock or anything with a heavy guitar, it seems to put the voice out in the background, but hey thats small potatoes considering. The speakers are also very very loud and watching movies is just a joy in itself. I was leary at Acers laptop direction since they came out with the Acer One, and then bought Gateway/Emachines i could see they weren't putting as much effort into there own Acer machines anymore, and they were becoming harder to find. Well i'm glad they are back and selling well! For a while they were just selling cheapo (single core) processing laptops, and the acer timeline series was a complete disaster mainly because it was a great idea and design BUT they just couldnt handle VISTA with the specs that were on the inside. Bring them back now with windows 7 and the I series processors and you'd have a winner. So this is a great laptop, no fingerprints on the keypad or main area, the top in a nice colored glossy blue so fingerprints can be seen but you have to look closely. This laptop is everything you need and a little more.

Its very fast and converting music and videos is done within minutes. I do a lot of video file converting, AVI, to VSO(dvd format etc) and this thing just flies, it actually surpasses the speed of my Acer Desktop that i sold my parents this year and it has 8 gigs of DDR3 and a core 2 quad in it. How they do it i have no idea, but the speed on this puppy is just as fast if not faster in some cases. But the tower is a gaming rig, and also has Vista on it, so that may be why the difference in speed. So spend your money and get these while they last, don't bother with Best Buy, they don't sell anything but crap anymore and also they rip you off with the 15% restocking fee which is unfair because who buys something and is ALWAYS pleased with it? No one. Go to wal mart, staples, here, or anywhere else you can find it, you'll be glad you did. Btw the web cam is the best out there, very good for low light video conferencing.

Btw as i'm typing this it says i have 4hrs and 26mins, so wow even better than i thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars worth every penny, March 10, 2010
This review is from: Acer Aspire AS5740-5780 Laptop - Intel Core i3-330M 2.13GHz / 15.6" LCD / 4GB DDR3 Memory / 250GB HD / 8x DVD Super Multi Drive / HDMI Port / 802.11b/g/Draft-N / Built-in Webcam / Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) (Personal Computers)
I bought 3 of them in [...] for $499 with free shipping. I only had to pay tax. There is nothing out there that meet this specs. 4 core cpu, 3.5h battery, what a screen --> LED. DVDs look just amayzing. Why buy smom old technologe if you can have the newest technology for the same price. THINK ABOUT IT?

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the price of an Intel CORE i3, January 22, 2011

This review is from: Acer Aspire AS5740-5780 Laptop - Intel Core i3-330M 2.13GHz / 15.6" LCD / 4GB DDR3 Memory / 250GB HD / 8x DVD Super Multi Drive / HDMI Port / 802.11b/g/Draft-N / Built-in Webcam / Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) (Personal Computers)
Without a doubt, Acer is on its way to becoming the SAMSUNG of laptop/netbook market! I tested out HP, Toshiba and Gateway at the stores and ended up getting this one for less than $480. I've had this laptop for over 10 months now with no issues, none whatsoever. Acer Aspire AS5740-5780 Laptop - Intel Core i3-330M 2.13GHz / 15.6" LCD / 4GB DDR3 Memory / 250GB HD / 8x DVD Super Multi Drive / HDMI Port / 802.11b/g/Draft-N / Built-in Webcam / Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)I am running the Win 7 Home Edition that came standard off the box. I used it primarily for Office apps and browsing. Recently, I have started to plug it into my 42" LCD TV through HDMI. Resolution on my 42" screen is awesome, I watched almost all my movies with this laptop. Like the previous user, the sound is remarkable for an Acer. I would recommend this particular model for anyone looking to get an Intel Core i3 laptop. I think this machine is equipped to be good for another 2-3 years. It's running 64-bit and has HDMI outputs. The built-in webcam is solid as well. My friend's on Skype can't stop telling about the clarity of my video feed. Great buy and such a good deal for an Core i3. Makes no difference when compared to a Core i5.
