The first thing I noticed when I turned this laptop on was the big beautiful bright screen. The second thing was that this looks like it should have cost way more than it did. The styling and ergonomics are very professional looking. The keyboard is easy to use and fits my larger fingers with ease, and I love the full included 10-key pad. The multi-touch touchpad is big and responsive. I love the built-in scroll function. I have installed Microsoft Office 2010, Photoshop CS5, WinAMP, Civilization IV, and Assassin's Creed so far, and all the programs run beautifully. I am not getting great speed out of Photoshop, but that is to be expected, after all this is a laptop. I especially love the hi-def visualizations in WinAMP. The dual-core processor so far has handled multitasking well. I was listening to music, burning DVDs, and playing Civ IV all at the same time with no problems. Windows 7 made connecting to my wireless network a snap, and I noticed much faster file transfer speeds with this laptop than i was getting with my Win XP desktop.
The only real complaint I have with this product is the lack of built-in bluetooth. But for less than 600 bucks, I can't expect everything. One other area where Acer went wrong is partnering with McAfee for antivirus protection. Ladies and Gentlemen, McAfee SUCKS. I quickly uninstalled it and installed ESET antivirus instead. Other small complaints include all the "free" trials of software preinstalled on the hard drive, and, the touchpad is maybe just a little TOO big, sometimes when typing my palm hits it, sending my cursor flying off. This computer won't play the newest and greatest games, but it handles everything else I've thrown at it with ease. Unless you need a hardcore gaming rig or the ability to render hi-def video in realtime, you can't beat this machine for the price.

I've had this laptop for several weeks and it has not disappointed. It is fast, loaded with extras, has a great display, and is less than 8 pounds! Also, the RAM can be expanded to 8Gig. This is a great laptop - comparable to those costing much more. A+++++++++

A great computer for the price with a good amount of extras. Well worth it. Speed is good and the screen size is even better. I would recommend this to anyone.

I bought the Acer Aspire AS7551-2531 as a gift to someone I know. But before I gave the computer to this very lucky person, I was testing it to see how good it really was. First off, Acer did something really nice with the packaging and the feeling I got from just opening it and observing the product was amazing. I won't spoil those details and will leave you to see for yourselves if you buy it.
Now onto the real specs of this affordable powerhouse. The memory of the laptop is very high speed and gave me a 7.5 on the Windows Experience Index (WEI). The processor is also very fast as it is the second generation dual core of the Athlon family, the Athlon II. The integrated ATI Radeon 4250 performs very well for its intended uses, which is more on the lines of video instead of gaming. But that did not stop me from trying it out on some of my games :) . I actually managed to play Street Fighter IV on this notebook (DVD I purchase when it first came out) with settings between mid to high at 1280x720. This was accomplished by downloading and installing the AMD Dual Core Optimizer (DCO) from AMD's support website. So with that I say that gaming wise, this laptop can have secondary or tertiary uses in light gaming, with the only exception of Street Fighter IV, which are games that do not require the beefy, monsters that are the desktop graphics cards on desktops. The sound quality on this laptop is also good. The only drawbacks I think of is the fact that the notebook has no Blu-ray drive built in, but perhaps this is a good thing considering the power of Radeon HD 4250. Also, it only comes with about 3 or 4 USB 2.0 ports, not the 3.0 standard, and no express card slot. In addition, The laptop has only 3.0 hours battery life. Besides those flaws, This laptop also has a very vivid and colorful picture via the jumbo 17.3 in widescreen display with enhanced Acer display technology. Hard drive size is also adequate. My final thought on this purchase is that this notebook is a great buy considering the price and it feels and looks like a professional product. If you want some portable gaming power, I would suggest that you look to spend in the $900.00 - $1000.00 range. Nonetheless, you won't be disappointed in buying this laptop if you are an everyday casual and some what demanding user.

One of the best I've ever owned,

I purchased this in Feb '10 from Staples, I find Feb is a good time to buy laptops. I've got 5 of them in the family, we ditched desktops a few years ago, and use network storage etc. I was very skeptical about the laptop before purchasing. The rep said they were "ok" but was pointing me towards hp. I've already got newer Lenovo (love it for ubuntu), HP, two Compaq's, and an older Dell. None of my laptops had a numeric keypad and I was tired of lugging around an external corded numeric keypad. My wife's HP has a numeric keypad, but it's a 15.6 display and the keyboard is crunched into a small space, so for me, needing to do a lot of accounting work, it wasn't practical. When I saw the 499 sale price I really wondered if it was going to work ok. I doubted just about everything about it, but the keyboard sold me. They keys are really nicely placed with a little separation like some Sony laptops. However, once I started using it, I found this was an awesome purchase especially in terms of value and performance.
I find the battery power routinely gives me 3.5+ hours and the processor doesn't break a sweat -- it's cool on my lap even after many hours of work. The screen gives me enough space to spit the screens and have enough space to work on my accounting work. Other benefits - the multi-gesture touchpad is cool and has proved useful. The wifi is great, picks up the n with my dlink 655 beautifully, and even as an ubuntu bigot I have grown to really like windows 7! Overall, I don't write many of these reviews, but I felt really strongly about this laptop, it has been great!

I purchased this laptop about a week ago. so far, i love it. it does every thing i need too plus so much more. The speed is excelent and the picture quality blew my mind. I got this laptop to do school work on and was going to save my old laptop to mess around on. but when i used this one i just couldnt go back to my dell inspiron anymore. the key board on this thing is awsome. if you do alot of typing, like i do for school, you cant beat this keyboard. its big enough for any sized hands. and watching movies on this is great!!! the only problems i have with it is that it is so big its not that easy to take around. i dont mind taking it around with me at school, it just gets a bit annoying at times. but if you dont mind, then its perfect. the other problem is the multi touch track pad. it does not work as good as i thought it would but it does work. all in all, their are many more pros than cons. i was originaly going to get a macbook, but for the price i thought i would take my chances with this one and i am very glad i did. this computer is great and i strongly recomend it for college students, moderate gamers, anyone that types alot, and people who downloads movies. 5 out of 5!!!
P.S. it is a pc, so i recomend getting a antivirus. i use avast, its free and it works good. it comes with a trial mcafee but i hate it.

1. It cannot connect to my WI-FI '802'11n) network. I have 2 desktops, 2 netbooks (ASUS) one iPod, one iPad all connect to my wi-fi network nicely. My friends come to my home with laptops all can connect to the wi-fi network easily.
2. I called Acer customer service. I told the guy that "I just bought the laptop today" He said, there is a $129 charge for this problem. I was shocked that a brand new computer, no warranty.(on the wi-fi) My daughter said to me, " you knew Acer customer service was bad, (I bought a Acer laptop for my daughter 2 years ago, just few month later, the "i" key on the keyboard had no response. My daughter called up Acer for help, but always instructed to leave a message and will call back in24 hours. but Acer never did. then my daughter asked me to call Acer. I tried few times and never get answer) Why do you buy Acer again?" I called Amazon that night. Amazon issued me a return code and sent me prepaid return label via email. I return the laptop to Amazon the next day. Conclusion: 1. Don't buy Acer. 2. trust Amazon.

I purchased this last September, it looks nice and works fast, but within a few weeks the right mouse button stopped working. I contacted ACER unlike some
higher end manufacturers like HP, Acer will not replace faulty product, also you have to pay freight on returning it for repair. I must have spent some 20+ hours messing around with their customer service, and reloading data/software they even made me reformat the hard drive before agreeing I could return it for repair. Anyway not a good consumer experience, maybe you will have better luck, but I don't think I'll be buying another Acer.

Great Budget Laptop & Desktop Replacement,

This review is from: Acer Aspire AS7551-2531 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black) (Personal Computers)
I wanted a second PC so after seeing a friends earlier model Acer I chose this model.
The main thing I like is the full-size keyboard w/number pad, I never liked the tiny chicklet-sized keys on some laptops and Netbooks. I also don't care for the condensed keyboards on some laptops. The hardware on this laptop is more than adequate for video, e-mail, browsing and can even handle some games - although if you want a gaming laptop I'd spend more on one with a better 3D card. I was going to originally get a Netbook but figured the novelty of a light/small PC with a 10 inch screen would wear off after about 20 minutes. This laptop weighs 8 lbs and is more than portable, I enjoy the vibrant and bright 17" screen. Video and online TV look nice and playback on Netflix is good also. I have a wired and wireless network at home and hooking up to the wireless was a snap with Windows 7 networking made almost too easy. There is no Blue-tooth, but that doesn't bother me, I bought a Logitech Performance MX (on sale at the time) which takes up 1 of the 3 USB ports and it works great - no cables to mess with. This laptop is a great value at $649 when I bought it in July of 2010 and it's going strong, no problems. I bought this at Fry's Electronics and skipped the $80 extended warranty - this has a 2 year through Acer. I did see that the price was the same both at retail stores and online (Amazon). I'm quite happy with this laptop as a good and inexpensive desktop replacement PC. |
