1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry Amazon
I purchased this laptop because it was supposed to have an 8 hour battery "all day battery". I got it and fired it up and the first thing it did was crash. Then it crashed 2 more times trying to burn a DVD. When I fully charged the thing again, it said it had full charge and 4 hours use time left. I called Amazon and they said no problem it was defective so send it back...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Laptop for the $$$$, August 24, 2009
This review is from: Acer Aspire Timeline AS4810TZ-4696 14-Inch Laptop - 8+ Hours Battery Life (Personal Computers)
Pros:

-Bright LED Backlit screen.
-Very light and portable.
-Cool on your lap and quiet.
-DVD Burner.
-HDMI output.
-Solid battery life (5+ hours real world).
-Runs programs much better than Netbooks...heck, it has Vista pre-installed, it has to be powerful.

Cons:

-Bloatware! Tons of useless things installed...20+ trial games.
-Backup DVD's didn't burn.
-Almost zero documentation. Had to figure out on my own what all the flashing lights were.

This is the perfect combination of netbook & laptop. It has the price of a high-end netbook, with the performance of a laptop. It won't run 5 programs at once, burn a DVD, and render a movie at the same time, but it will do each of these by themselves with zero problems.

The screen is unbelievable. Very bright. You can't run it on the highest setting in the dark because it is blinding.

Battery life is very solid for the size of the battery. A lot of laptops have really big batteries attached to them to get long life. This computer doesn't have a big battery, but lasts a very long time. It has a battery management system pre-installed that does the same thing as Windows 7 RC. I turned it off and just used Windows 7.

Overall, this computer can't be beaten for the price. I have used/owned Apple laptops in the past. With Windows 7 running, this computer is better than any Mac at half the price...now, if only we could get rid of the crapware.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great laptop to take with you everywhere, September 11, 2009
This review is from: Acer Aspire Timeline AS4810TZ-4696 14-Inch Laptop - 8+ Hours Battery Life (Personal Computers)
First of all, you have to accept that there will be no "perfect" laptop unless you have a deep pocket. Yes, I would love to have a machine that gives me the best of everything but then, I would spend a lot more than this. My first laptop was a Toshiba Satellite M35X and it kept me on my nerves because the battery life was a miserable 2+ hr. I could not use the energy saving mode to work either because the screen would be too dim in any lit environment. I had to make sure I always shuts it down when taking a break and I had to charge it 3 times a day if not more often. It drove me nuts! And I eventually give up on taking it with me due to the Toshiba's 6+ lb weight. And to top it off, I paid over $900 for it!

So I finally decided that I have had enough with the Satellite and I learned my lessons. For my 2nd laptop, I decided to stick to what matters to me the most -- the weight and battery life. I was thrilled when the Timeline came to the market because all the light and thin and long battery life laptops just cost way more than I am willing to pay for. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the portability of this ACER Timeline 4810TZ. I only charge the battery once a day and I leave the cords at home. I am so relieved not having to be concerned about the battery level constantly. In energy saving mode the screen is still sharp and bright. I installed Visual Studio to do my programming work and it runs fine. It's very quiet and stays cool. (my Satellite was by no means noisy but the fan was annoying, and any laptop that runs hot should be a concern to you, my co-worker's HP was designed for cooking and it cooked itself to death in just over a year!) The sound quality is fine. Don't forget to update the video driver if yours comes with an older version or you might experience the problems mentioned in the other review. I have had this laptop for almost 3 months and the keys are just fine. I feel it's well built and looks elegant. Overall, this laptop is a great buy and if you need more processing power and can afford a little more (about $300 at time of this review), go for the model with the SU9400 processor. If you are not certain about Acer's reliability, your best bet will be to buy a 2 year old model because you just don't know what issues a new model might have. My Toshiba had a class action suit due to many many problems and wasn't Toshiba a decent brand? This is why now my strategy for computers is to spend the least for what I need and not overbuy. This way I can afford to upgrade more often regardless of my "luck" with any model.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Windows 7 Friendly., December 3, 2009

I needed something i can move around and the same time have some power behind it. I love the LED Screen, and the battery life is amazing (although you need to give up some power to do so), and the HDMI is a plus in my book.

PS.

Item qualifies for Windows 7 Upgrade 64 bit English Edition!

------------------UPDATE WINDOWS 7 INSTALLATION-------------------------

Please beware, the DVD drive does not function properly with this lap top after Windows 7 Installation. There seems to be some bugs for Windows 7 64 bit. I was required to delete scripts, enter the command prompt, and still no luck. Tech support stump, and from simple Google searches many people experience same problem. I recommend if you buy this lap top you maintain on keeping Windows Vista and not venturing into Windows 7.

First, check into Smartcaps from [...] to Resolve the Cap Lock problem (There being no status light - been using this product for years on other laptops, this time it is a necessity/lifesaver!)

Got it for my lady, to quiet down the complaints about cords, connectivity & XP problems - knowing that any problems would only increase the volume. She was not picked for her technical expertise.

It has been nice and quiet ever since. The 8-hour battery lets her carry it around unencumbered throughout the ranch, she knows about the "power-saver" button and returns it to power in the evenings. The controls are quirky but that only seems to add to its charm - her assessment of the screen is that it is like the mirror on a ladies' compact - thin and solid.

By the way, selected the 14" over the 13" strictly for the CD player - did not need the complaints. Did not mention the lack of Bluetooth to her - and hopefully she won't be reading this. Picked up a cheap, tiny USB Bluetooth radio planning to leave it plugged in, but it protrudes too obtrusively, more like a mushroom than a bump.

Otherwise, am Very Happy - and things are quiet. For now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Acer Timeline SU2700 series, December 26, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer Aspire Timeline AS4810TZ-4696 14-Inch Laptop - 8+ Hours Battery Life (Personal Computers)
I have always liked Acer product and this one is no exception.
I am satisfied for the price that I paid for the laptop.

Pros:
1. Slim body
2. Very light for its size (14")
3. Very spacious keyboard
4. Long battery life (almost 8 hours)

Cons,
1. SU2700 at 1.3 GHz single core is quite slow at times.
2. Returning from Stand by takes up to 1 minute occasionally.
3. Windows 7 would be a great addition instead of Windows Vista (takes up too much room)

Recommendations:
Buy an Acer Timeline, but a duo core with Windows 7.

That is not a full refund, if they do not fix that I am done buying from Amazon!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Acer Aspire Timeline 14 in. 8+ hour battery laptop, February 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer Aspire Timeline AS4810TZ-4696 14-Inch Laptop - 8+ Hours Battery Life (Personal Computers)
Excellent laptop with the exception of poor workmanship on outside materials. There are plastic clip that hide the wires that connect the monitor to the base that keep coming off. One side stays on, but the other does not. Contact Acer support and they route you to India or some other country on the other side of our world and there English is poor. Could not understand them so we just gave up. Support is poor!

Other than that, the laptop is nice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not built for Windows 7, December 28, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer Aspire Timeline AS4810TZ-4696 14-Inch Laptop - 8+ Hours Battery Life (Personal Computers)
I love this laptop. The only thing is that I updated to Windows 7 and not everything works with it. The WebCam does not record videos, even with third party programs; it does, however, take snapshots. The microphone does not work either. Updating the drivers does not seem to do anything to fix the problems. The DVD drive also does not work too well. Other than that this product is great. The battery life does last for eight hours and the screen is very nice. I run very demanding programs and it handles them with little lag time.
These are minor things to run Windows 7.

Got mine for $450 during black friday sale and it is amazing. Way way more powerful than a netbook for almost the same price. I have yet to test the reliability(Of course it takes a few weeks of usage) but I havent been disappointed so far.
