Great Computer at a Good Price, May 30, 2008
This review is from: Acer Aspire (Personal Computers)
I have owned an Acer laptop for 5 years and never had any problems. There is a series of Acer 5920 laptops covering a wide price range and I have had one for several months. I find it to be a superb computer for my purposes at a good price. The biggest difference between computers in this series is the computing chip used. Although completely satisfactory for most purposes, this particular model is probably a bit slow for gamers. Also the Vista operating system is a memory hog so upgrading to 3 or 4 gigabytes is a good idea. Be sure to register your new computer (of whatever brand) with the manufacturer and keep good hard copy records in case you need support. For what it is worth the 5920 was designed for Acer by BMW. My technical level - very high.

Nice price, poor computer, December 19, 2008
This review is from: Acer Aspire (Personal Computers)
I bought this computer for my mom last Christmas, and out of the box it worked great, was fast, not a problem at all. Fast forward to less than 2 months later and it shut itself off. Checked the power, made sure everything was plugged in (normal things you do to make sure its working) then I felt the adapter, it was ice cold. Sent an email off to Acer, they told me its probably the adapter or an internal problem, told me to make sure and get back to them. It was clearly the adapter, however, my mom hiked the AT for 6 months so she obviously did not need a computer. When she returned instead of contacting them I just got a replacement, no problem, worked great, just like the first day. Fast forward to today, the computer greets her with a restore prompt. Think it odd, try to do the restore, repair, memory fix, even the PQSERVICE partition all unavailable, citing corruption. Still in the process of trying to fix, but I definitely cannot recommend this computer. I say search elsewhere, perhaps, Acer has other better computers out there, but this one is not one of them. In fact, I have never seen so many problems with a new computer in my life, and all within less than a year.
UPDATE: Turns out the issue is a result of Vista and Service Pack 1, so it's actually Microsoft's fault. However, I got a response from Acer, their recommendation: buy the restore discs. I hope, if you buy an Acer, you have better luck than me and that you never have to deal with support, since their idea of fixing things seems to involve buying something.
