Acer has been dominating the Chromebook market by releasing high-quality, affordable, and reliable Chromebooks that stifle the competition--but does the new Acer Chromebook 13 really offer improvements worth ditching you old Chromebook for this newer one? Let's look at what upgrades have been made and let you decide if it's worth taking the plunge into this new Chromebook.

I'm going to focus a lot on the new processor as it is the first Chromebook to use the NVIDIA Tegra based K1 processor.

THE NEW NVIDIA TEGRA K1 CPU:

Switching to the NVIDIA Tegra based K1 CPU has given the newest Acer Chromebook 13 a peppier power plant while retaining the same 2GB RAM, 16GB on-board storage as its predecessor. The Chromebook c720 was the best Chromebook you could buy until the introduction of the Chromebook 13 although since it's so new, only time will tell if it truly outshines the Acer c720.

While the more powerful NVIDIA CPU may seem like a major upgrade, in reality and actual use-case scenarios, the difference will be virtually unnoticeable to the user. Why? Because the Acer c720, running a lower end Intel Celeron processor packed enough power to do literally everything you needed to do on a Chromebook.

The problem with the new Tegra K1 based processor from NVIDIA is that during extensive testing, it is having problems running some apps because of compatibility issues. Why does that matter? Well, since the Acer Chromebook 13 is the only Chromebook on the market right now using the NVIDIA Tegra based K1 processor, many Chrome app developers haven't built their apps to run on these CPU's and as a result, some apps simply won't run on this new model.

I pre-ordered this device back in early August and received it about two weeks ago and have had the chance to use it it many settings. Previously I had the HP Chromebook 14 which I would have rated a 4 star machine, but decided to sell that and order this since I wanted 1080p, Wireless AC, longer battery life and a fan -ess design.

The good:
The screen. I keep reading reviews about screen angles and things but maybe I'm weird in that either a) I only look at my laptop from proper viewing angles, or b) I don't have much to share with others unless I connect this to my projector via HDMI (which btw works great). The fanl-ess design and solid state (as are many Chromebooks) are good choices for durability, portability and battery life. Compared to the HP 14 there is a significant weight reduction in this Acer (even if specs say its minimal). The keyboard is a good size and the keys feel good to the touch. I can't comment on the processor at this time as I haven't pushed its limits, but it works as it should for basic things such as typing this review.

The quirky:
Well, many of these things could be software issues or bugs so I will try to update this review if I notice changes. First of all the WIFI reception is less than great. Don't get me wrong, it will pick up WIFI just like any other device. However sometimes it just doesn't seem to pull the full strength of the WIFI. For example, I have a back deck which is the farthest point from my router (which is 802.11n), roughly 35 feet. I enjoy sitting outside and listening to music, work on projects etc. While I have never had a problem, nor any of my friends have ever had problems with the connection out there with laptops or phones, I haven't been able to do things such as stream Pandora as it constantly buffers.

Brought it home and set it up with no problems at all. For me, a total Mac user, this was nothing short of miraculous. Love the feel of it on my lap. So lightweight.. and after using it the past two and a half hours it isn't warm at all. I think I am over buying Apple products.

I got my Chromebook 13 to my surprise on 9-26-14 just before I was leaving for a short vacation.(thank you Amazon) I couldn't wait to give this thing a run on the.......hotel wifi. Oh well it is what it is but ,to my surprise the hotel had 7mbs download speed. This was not as fast as my 50mbs at home but very good for a hotel. Coming for using the Samsung Series 3(2012) and the Chromebox(Google io with the I5 chip), I was very familiar with what to, and what not to expect from chrome devices and the OS itself. IMO. it's not for the real heavy task. My Samsung devices have been great for all my task, email, movies, music and lots of web browsing.I did do some work in Google Docs and convert some Word files here and there but left most of that to my Windows PC.

Now that I have this new Acer with this power bump I find is very easy to do it all from here.I'm not a heavy 20 tabs open kind of guy but,I found I could be with this device. I had no real lag even on the hotel wifi.I have been reading lot of reviews on many tech review sites that speak of lag and stutter, not so far on mine. But to be fair, I did do a power wash when I(yes me) screwed up the settings so bad I had to pull the ripcord. I think the power wash was a good thing because I feel like there is a performance boost. I don't know if any of the reviewers were on beta or just the stables but, I have always worked on beta. Beta get you the cool new stuff from Google with not too many bugs that you my find if you run in Dev mode.

Anyway, web pages open very fast. The resolution of 1920x1080 is a big improvement from the 1366x768 of my Samsung and most other Chrombooks . When is switched to the beta channel it changed to 1536x864 which still looked great. Reading text at both resolution was still a step up from the 1366.
