The Acer R11 Chromebook is a product with something of an identity crisis, but one that I still quite like, for reasons I'll explain in detail below.
In brief, the R11 is much better for people who want a Chromebook that is often used with its keyboard for content creation of any kind, but also want an IPS touchscreen display, whereas the Flip is much better for people who often use it as a touchscreen device and use it less frequently as a content creation device.
The Chromebook a lot of people expected to compare this to is the Asus C100P "Chromebook Flip", which is another touchscreen Chromebook with four different use modes. However, outside of their use of IPS touchscreen displays, these Chromebooks could not be more different. The Flip is a sleek, light device with a metal case, which feels just about small enough to be used as a pseudo-tablet, but just large enough to be a laptop when you need one. Inside, it is powered by an ARM-based Rockchip SoC.
The R11, on the other hand, is an 11.Read more ›
Display: seems much better than the previous 720 models, being IPS. Better viewing angles for sure. Now - this is not the Toshiba Chromebook 2 display, not the caliber you will find on a more expensive Windows/Mac machine... the colors and brightness still fade away when you rotate the display up/down and left/right. But it's certainly better than the old TN screen. More importantly, however, it is not as bright as I would like it to be. I keep it at almost full brightness indoors. I don't think I'll be able to see much outside, but will have to see. That's too bad, because I like to use the Chromebook to check newly recorded GoPro footage outside. There is some light leakage in corners, not a big deal, only noticeable on black backgrounds. Touchscreen works very well - responsive, no issues there.
Performance: the machine feels slower to me than the older generation Celeron and i3 720. We will have to see some benchmarks from official reviews later, but generally the 3150 processor feels less snappy to me than even the original 2955. Don't get me wrong - it's not nearly as bad as the 2840 in the more recent generations (like the older Toshiba Chromebook 2) or the Rockchip in the Asus Chromebook Flip. It's much more snappy, websites load and scroll quicker. But I can't shake the feeling that it's not as quick as the older 720 was.Read more ›
If you're looking for an affordable mobile computing option for your family, the Acer Chromebook R11 is definitely a great buy! So many things appealed to me about it. On first glance, I love that it can open into so many positions. Use it as a traditional laptop, a tent, a stand-up display (like a backwards laptop) and even a tablet. I'll spare you the tech specs that I shared in my blog review, because you can scroll right up and see them. Also, this is a review from a mom/blogger/layman's point of view. There are other fabulous reviewers here who cover the tech angles way better than I could, so read those too before making your decision.
I love that it has internal storage. This is an absolute must for me, as I wanted the Chromebook so I could sit on my couch and prep graphics for blog posts. In order to do that, I need to be able to store pictures on the drive, upload them to my favorite online photo editing sites, then download the finished version. You also get 100 GB of free storage on Google Drive for 2 years.
I also love the Tablet mode. Yes, it's a rather large and thick tablet. Yes, I have other actual tablets. But for some of my work purposes, I need a desktop browser and even though my iPad and Android tablets have Chrome, it's clunky and slow on them. I love that I can fold the R11 back and get to work on scheduling social media, browsing Amazon (I did almost all my holiday shopping in tablet mode on the R11) and pretty much anything else I can do from the comfort of my couch.
As others have mentioned, occasionally it seems like the R11 forgets its in tablet mode and doesn't bring up the touch keyboard.Read more ›
