Something you may want to know upfront: 6-bit HFRC and 1.5 Watt speakers,
By
This review is from: Acer H233H bmid 23-Inch Widescreen LCD Display (Black) (Electronics)
As many today's "cheap and fast" LCD monitors this one is a 6 bit screen. This said it can only produce 262,144 exact colors - and do this very fast.
Other 16,515,072 colors are produced using very sophisticated Hi-FRC time-based dithering algorithm, that actually flicks monitor dot slightly at very high frequency. Most people do not notice HFRC dithering and it does not create any inconvenience for computer related activities or for watching movies or for playing games. Nevertheless Hi-FRC systems visibly change colors shade depending on screen tilt. So if you are buying this screen for editing images (and I mean at least PhotoShop or Gimp here) or any other application that requires correct color representation you should consider more expensive 8 bit screen. With exception of this detail the monitor is real value for money. It should be mentioned that HDMI input and built-in speakers open couple of interesting capabilities for this product. For example, using (included!) HDMI cable you can easily use it as a monitor for X-Box, PS-3 (but not for Wii) or DVD player with HDMI output. Or you can connect it to your cable provider hi-def box therefore instantly converting monitor to small HDTV. The only problem is quality of integrated speakers - see below. Well, I am still using it as a computer monitor, connected by (included!) DVI cable and pretty happy with the image quality. The screen is sharp, bright and I do not have a single dead pixel (but your mileage may vary, of course). Oh, and they include the VGA cable too, just in case. Other pleasant details are touch controls instead of buttons and a special control for fast switching between Text, Game, Cinema and User monitor profiles. Acer also includes program utility for some fair color correction, though as I say - if you need a better one, you may need an 8 bit LCD. There are some drawbacks, of course. First, the screen cannot be adjusted vertically (but you can adjust tilt). Second, as I have mentioned, this tilt changes colors slightly. If you look from below, colors seems darker. Third, integrated speakers are not suitable for stadium concerts... well, to be frank, with 1.5 watt power they barely acceptable as desktop speakers. It's probably a good thing one cannot connect Wii to this monitor, because it will be really hard to hear anything from the safe distance required for Wii controller. Despite all drawback this is well deserved 5 star product. One cannot expect to buy luxury car for the price of low end sedan. In its category, for this price and as of today this monitor is a brilliant product.

I bought this last week at a local Best Buy. I've used it for word processing, PPT and Photoshop, as well as for watching movies & TV shows on iTunes. Performance has been excellent, images sharp, colors more accurate than my aged eyes can measure. I haven't tried the speakers.
It plugged right in to my MacBook and worked without a hitch. I didn't bother with the enclosed CD. All necessary cables were supplied in the box. Would I buy it again? Yes.

As good as I hoped for,

I don't have much of a in depth knowledge about monitors, I just bought this at best buy after seeing the price was the same online and CNET had good things to say about this one.
And I'm not disappointed, it worked like a charm out of box (but that's expected I guess). What wasn't was, the inbuilt speaker and the touch sensitive buttons. Agreed both are not big selling points but was nevertheless nice touches. The pictures look good and crisp and it has the highest resolution in that range (1920 x 1080 / 75 Hz) And it has loads of inputs (DVI,HDMI and normal VGA) plus it come with all the cables (Very impressed)

A Monitor of great justice,

This monitor is so good. As you may know, there is a zombie apocalypse going on and four brave warriors are struggling to take out these cursed undead. I was using my old 19" 4:3 LCD with 20,000:1 contrast ratio to view my remote avatar as he battled out the good fight.
But upon getting this new monitor it is like Paul on the road to Damascus - clearly I was blind before. Now I can see the intricate details that are required to adequately fight off the hordes of the undead. Little bits of graffiti from survivors are now crisp and clear, easily read by flashlight. And thanks to a KVM switch I can go back and forth between fighting zombies and earning the $money needed to keep up the up-link between my office and the remote-zombie-killing avatar. Thanks Acer - I know you want me to save the world and now I'm doing it in style at a price I can afford. I can't help but notice that in the zombie filled city, it's viewsonic monitors being trashed by the dead, while I watch in style with 40,000:1 contrast with my Acer. No dead pixels, easy to setup, works with KVM, rocks harder, is shiny, has HDMI + VGA inputs, and is big and black and powerful like some ancient warrior rising from the Kingdom of Ghana to fight an anachronistic T-Rex plaguing the local villagers!

High Def on the Cheap,

This is a 1080p display for $200. That being said, it is not the best display in the world, but did you really expect it to be? I work for a video production company, so I spend my days dealing with formats, codecs, and video quality. When I started monitor shopping, I wanted something for my bedroom that could double as a second monitor for my 24" iMac and a display for my xbox 360.
Here's all the things wrong that I noticed: -Backlight bleed through the top and the bottom of the screen. Only noticeable when the screen is black or very dark. I really doubt this will bother anyone during normal use. -The stand is kind of flimsy and not height adjustable. Easily solved by putting it on top of something. It's low enough that you would only ever have to raise it. -Colors shift when you look at it from the left or right side. -Gets darker and lighter when you look at it from above or below (polarizing? I think that's what it's called). It's like the display on a laptop. The viewing angle isn't the best, but it's not the worst either. When I was looking at all the displays in Best Buy, it was one of the better ones. As long as you don't need super accurate color, it shouldn't bother you. And the only way to get a monitor that doesn't do this is to splurge on a higher quality one that doesn't use the cheap tn film technology. That will cost twice as much. -The touch buttons suck. Whatever. -The colors are off a little bit. Very noticeable when you look at color bars and test patterns and whatnot, during everyday use, not so much. Just factory settings were fine for what I was using it for. If you're anal about it, you can adjust it yourself. I didn't notice anything, but when I need accurate colors, my iMac display is really good. I wouldn't use this. -On the positive side. No dead pixels out of the box. -No ghosting or screen lag at all, even with something super fast paced like Street Fighter 4. In the end, it comes down to what you're looking for. If you're looking for a main display to do photoshop work on, this isn't it. If you're looking for a second display, or you just don't want that hdmi plug on the back of your xbox to go to waste, this is perfect. I took it out of the box, plugged in my xbox, and enjoyed some 1080p Street Fighter all night for $200. My suggestion: don't but a monitor without looking at it first. You could spend hours reading reviews online, or line them up at an electronics store and decide in 20 seconds.

Incredible! Highly Recommended!,
This review is from: Acer H233H bmid 23-Inch Widescreen LCD Display (Black) (Electronics)
I purchased this product from a local Best Buy after doing some online research for it. I normally purchase Samsung or LG screens just because I can rest assured that they will be excellent monitors, but I decided to try Acer for the first time with this monitor.
I paid $219 at Best Buy, bought the extend 4 year warranty for an additional $39.95, for an out the door price of $278. I've been using this monitor now for a while, and CANNOT tell the difference between it and the LG 22" I have next to it! What an amazing monitor! 40,000:1 contrast, 23" wide, full 1080P, THIS MONITOR GETS AN A+++++++++++!

You get what you pay for. I bought X233H it but quickly sold and replaced it with the much higher priced 20" Del 2007FP.
In many respect the X233H 23" widescreen was flawless. There were no bad pixels and the colors were bright. I had no complaints in viewing things such as photos of flowers, the desert, the ocean, or the sky. Photos of people were disappointing; probably because unlike flowers or the desert, etc., I can tell when skin tones are off. It does text very well with high resolution. However, thing that are very lightly outlined such as the boxes you see on the internet asking to fill in your email, etc., sometimes are not visible like they are on most other monitors including a year 2000 CRT monitor. On eBay if you click to view the automatic bids, you can tell the automatic bids are there, however the automatic bids are not readable unless you click and drag to highlight them, similar to how you copy and paste. Without highlighting, the automatic bids, that are easily readable on other monitors, are almost invisible on the X233H. At Acer you cannot talk to a person. Everything is automated and their email tech support is worthless. I made six attempt to get an answer to find out if the condition I described above regarding the almost invisible boxes and automatic eBay bids are normal for the X233H and never got an answer. Well I got replies, but they were not answers. It was more like automatic computer generated replies based on key words in my messages. However, to Acer's credit, I understand they have good warranty service, even if automated. Basically, if you want an inexpensive 23" widescreen monitor and can live with the several deficiencies I described, the Acer 233H is a good buy. However, if you require better quality and good color reproduction, you will need to look for a smaller or more expensive monitor. For example, even though the Dell 20" 2007FP has a screen that has 15 percent fewer square inches, it is still almost twice as expensive as the X233H.

if there's a better screen for the money...,

I just bought this screen from BB (about $23o, + 18. for a mini dvi to dvi adapter. could have shaved $25 from total if I had ordered online) and now I can't remember what life was like before I hooked it up to my macbook. the first review on this product page lays it out in terms of technical specs, and I don't know alot about that stuff anyway, so I won't bore you. I will say that I read a ton of user reviews, and for the money, this screen is very hard to beat. it's not very adjustable height-wise, but pretty much all relevant cables are included, except the mini dvi adapter, and the picture is fabulous right out of the box, no installs, no tweaking. it's possible that if you're looking to do some serious photo manipulation or graphic design you might need something up market, but for surfing, watching movie/tv downloads, basic photo/video editing, word processing etc, this can't be beat! highly recommended!!

PROS:
I bought this after noticing my 3 year old 19" Dell LCD was loosing color definition as I had began to compensate for dimming with brightness and contrast adjustments. The H233H does not have this problem. This thing is bright, and colors look amazing. I calibrated it with GretagMacbeth ColorChecker chart and it's impressively accurate. The black levels are nice and deep but not 40000:1. I briefly tested the HDMI input with my xbox360 and was happy to see full screen HD resolution. CONS: The built in 1.5W speakers are tiny and are not really usable. I'm not sure why they are even included. The stand is rather rigid and offers very little adjustability. Note: ATOW - I've owned it for one month and bought it from Amazon.com

Acer H233HBmid 23" monitor is great. A nice look and incredible picture.
They were fast on having it sent out and received it quickly. For the cost you can't you would have to spend a lot more to get more screen but the clarity would not be as good. I did my research and this is a great deal. |
