I actually ended up purchasing mine from Best Buy because it was a little cheaper there. You immediately notice the speed of the core i5. They only clock this one at 1.8GHz but it performs much faster with the dual cores. It also has a self-initiating turbo feature that ups the CPU speed to 2.2GHz or higher when demand is high. To put it into perspective, my previous laptop was an AMD Sempron at 2.2GHz and this machine is much faster. The 6GB of memory really helps. I don't do a lot of gaming, but I do multitask all the time and the memory helps to keep the system from bogging down. The touchscreen is kind of cool although I'm not really sure I need it. A lot of people don't like Windows 8 and I'm not sure if I'm going to stick with it or not, but that doesn't change the fact that this is still a very solid laptop for the money you pay. Another thing I noticed about this machine is that they did a good job with ventilation. I have had issues with overheating with past laptops and it seems like they setup their cooling very well here. If you're looking for a solid Ultrabook that won't hurt your wallet too much, I would highly recommend this unit.

Update 12/14/2013:
After having this for a while and being able to further evaluate, I figured I would follow up. I am still very pleased with the speed of this laptop. It wakes from sleep almost instantly. The tasks that I do the most include internet browsing, email, word processing (Microsoft Word), and school-related research. I have had 10+ tabs open alongside open .pdf's and documents and this machine does not slow down even a bit. I am finally getting used to Windows 8 with the touchscreen, and now I am actually starting to like it.

Bought this laptop in August of 2014 and was amazed at how much laptop I got for the price. I payed just over $500 for this laptop which is an incredible price for 6GB of memory and 500GB Hard drive and an i5 processor. Worked amazingly for about the first 4 months...and then the problems begun. It began to crash on the weekly basis and I had to back everything up to a flashdrive daily to avoid losing what was on it. I finally took it to Bestbuy to get it looked at and had to pay $200 to fix the hard drive off of a 5 month old laptop. Then the fan began to act up. I removed the cover myself and cleaned dust out of the fan hoping it would help with the insane amounts of noise being emitted from the unit. It didn't and I again took it back to Bestbuy, they cleaned the fan and recommended I use a cooling pad to keep it from overheating. I did so and the problems stopped for a while. Then about three weeks ago the computer would die suddenly as soon as it was unplugged from an outlet even though the battery displayed fully charged. Took it back to Bestbuy for the third time two days ago and was told that I had a dead battery, and that the battery is no longer manufactured. Upon hearing this I called Acer to see what (if anything) could be done to save my laptop. I was on the phone for two and a half hours with a customer service representative who fed me excuse after excuse as to what had happened to my computer. So now I'm stuck with a laptop that cannot be used without being plugged in, and I'm out over $300. Please do not waste your time with this computer. Horrible manufacturing, horrible customer service, and a huge money dump.

I got this laptop on sale at $500, and it's served me well for a couple of years now. It's a very capable machine which has no trouble running anything I've wanted - up to a lightly-modded Fallout: New Vegas on "high" graphics settings. Its weaknesses are mostly in construction, as far as I'm concerned.

Bad #1: The laptop would randomly shut off when I first got it, with no Blue Screen of Death or warning. This turned out to be a battery problem, which was covered under my 1-year warranty.
Bad #2: The power button should have been located under the screen like on most laptops. Instead, it is on the computer's front, and you'll often turn it off with your leg or stomach on accident. You learn to avoid it, but it's irksome.
Bad #3: The case plastic is brittle. After ~1.5 years of use, the screw attachment points on one corner of the laptop cracked and rattled around inside the case. This hasn't caused a real issue, but with normal handling none of my other laptops have suffered this problem.

Good #1: The i5 processor does well with excessive multi-tab browsing in Chrome, plus video and every non-game program I've ever tried to run on it.
Good #2: The Intel Integrated HD Graphics 4000 perform quite nicely for games a few years old, e.g. Fallout: New Vegas.

Altogether, I'm happy to keep this computer. At one and a half years out, it holds up as a pretty good buy for $500, but it has had problems.
