I used the computer for about 2 months. So far everything runs well except two things:

1. A main reason I picked this computer was Amazon's description said it came with a CD/DVD drive. This turned out to be not true.

2. Everytime I turned on the computer it took a long time (>5 min) for the computer to link to my home wireless network. I know it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome so far!, February 5, 2010

Well, I've had this little baby for 3 and half days and I love it! It's fast, Windows 7 is surprisingly slick and once I get used to it I'll probably like it even more. The notebook itself is nice and "netbook" sized and very light. This was one of the only models of notebook/netbook that had all the things that I wanted:

-Small and portable, not 13-15 inch screens. This 11.6" screen (measure diagonally) makes the whole thing about the size of a sheet of paper!

-Windows 7 64-bit.

-Atleast 2GB of ram and room for more (This comes with 3GB ram and supports up to 4GB)

-1080p HD Video support and HDMI port (which worked perfectly with my Samsung LCD, plugged right in and was simple as can be)

-Keyboard is full-sized

-Best part of all which is what made me buy this over the ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1201N-PU17-SL 12.1-Inch Silver Netbook - 5 Hours of Battery Life is that the battery life is MUCH longer! The advertised 8+ hours isn't too exaggerated, I got about 6 hours out of my first charge, and it easily could have been over 7 hrs if I had adjusted the settings a bit. The "balanced" power setting which changes depending on your battery level kept it perfect for a long time, but I turned up the brightness after it started dimming to conserve energy. No problem, it's now set to stay where I like it.

I also like how fast it boots up from sleeping or actually starting up. Windows 7 is going on my Desktop computer for sure.

I wasn't too crazy about the touch pad, it seemed too slow or overly sensitive, but I'm sure if I wanted to get used to it. The pinch-zoom and scroll features are really nice though! I still bought a mouse with it though, for when I'm able to use it (Logitech V220 Cordless Optical Mouse for Notebooks (Dark Silver)).

The keyboard might take a *little* bit of getting used to, but that's fine, what keyboard doesn't take a little getting used to? I should mention that it isn't really set up for any kind of graphics. I haven't tested any games on it since I don't plan on using it for anything much other than school, but from what I read at Newegg it's not going to play many 3D games, and certainly no newer ones at all. But, it can play Blu-Ray if you have an external BD drive. Pretty cool!

I will try to update this once I've owned it longer and field tested it more. So far so good, no regrets all. Buy this laptop! (also available in Black, but I dont want to be constantly wiping fingerprints off it...no prints on silver)

I first read about the Acer AS1810 in "a leading consumer magazine" (C.R.) where it received high marks for performance. I've had my laptop - the nicely done Olympic edition - about two weeks and have been very happy with it. Programs launch quickly, web browsing is fast and easy (even with downloading large video files), and the touchpad is the best I've ever used - I especially like the `press and scroll' (my own term) feature to scan pages. The large keys provide a good sense of touch, and the display is great. Did I mention that's its lightweight and has 8+ hours of battery life? An outstanding little computer!

I've had this computer for a week now, it's just what I'd been looking for. It boots very quickly. It seems very capable and powerful -- I will not be gaming... I just wanted a smaller, lighter machine that I could take with me to use at work on breaks, when traveling, and that didn't weigh me down in carry-on luggage.

I like the keyboard and the way the keys feel. Some function keys (delete for examp;e) are in different places than my previous laptop (HP) but I am getting used to this already. I actually like the delete key location (full upper right corner.) It's hard to miss it now. With it on my lap the size of the keyboard and the depth between front edge and the keys feels comfortable, it seems easier to type on than my old full-size laptop. Held on my lap, it is warm underneath but not even close to hot, very comfortable.

The screen is clear, clean images. This is my first small-notebook (they call this a netbook + ) and I am still getting used to the smaller screen print... on some webpages I have to increase the font to read easily (I am not young!). But this is part of the smaller size machine... not a flaw. With the screen back a little it does seem a little top-heavy. On a flat surface this isn't an issue, but I do notice it when I put it on a cushion on my lap to raise it up a little.

I have not yet tested the full extent of the battery. Used it only on battery one evening for a couple of hours and the battery had gone down maybe a third.

The touchpad seems great. It is so smooth, I thought I would hate it but it is better than my D3ll touchpad at work. The vertical scroll works well. I haven't done much with the other touchpad gestures. Again, the smaller depth at the front of the machine (the touchpad buttons are right up to the edge) is easier for me than other touchpads on full-size laptops that are embedded within the space between keyboard and front edge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Netbook Choice, February 8, 2010

Perfect size, battery, speed!!
Have it for over a month now.
Initially I was going to get 1810T but it was out of stock. Also it's $100 more expensive now.
This one is equally good and a lot cheaper, plus, I prefer the silver over black or blue.
This one doesnt get finger print.
So far I am very pleased!!

This is a perfect laptop if you want one that is comfortable in your lap. When used w/a pillow, you don't even feel any weight. Having a bigger screen than a netbook really helps. Some have complained about low volume. Two options must be changed to increase the sound level. (1)Control Panel>Sounds>Playback>Realtek Speaker>Levels> The level slider will probably be set to about 2/3. You must change it to 100%. (2) Next, click on Enhancements. Check box next to "Equalizer". In drop down menu, click on "Powerful". Apply changes & you will notice difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1810 TZ deserves the raves, May 16, 2010

This review is from: Acer Aspire Timeline AS1810TZ-4008 11.6-Inch Olympic Edition Laptop (Silver) (Personal Computers)
I bought the Olympic edition 1810 TZ from Amazon in December. I bought it as a travel laptop, but it has become my favorite device for all my computing.

PROS- light, small, quick to boot up, Windows 7, great screen, perfect device for watching Hulu videos, keyboard works very well, and of course BATTERY LIFE OUTSTANDING!

CONS- Touchpad sometimes balky and can misread finger movements, need external DVD player

After much research, I bought this device and have been extremely happy. I have long travelled with heavier work laptops, and this Acer is so much easier. Windows 7 is a vast improvement, everything is fast, and you can take this around in a briefcase or even a zip-up padfolio, making it very usable for long business meetings when you need to look up information. Everyone is envious of this guy, especially when you explain that it isn't a netbook, but a real computer. Most everyone who tries it wants one.

I made the conscious decision to go with this smaller footprint, knowing that I would sometimes miss the ability to pop in a DVD. I did buy an external (samsung# for very cheap, but I hate having to bring it along on trips, and tend to do without. This is mostly a challenge on overseas travel, where Hulu is unavailable, and I cannot keep up with shows like 24 or Lost, and I don't have movies with me. The other challenge of no CD/DVD drive was when my other home computer with Itunes died and then I left my ipod on a plane in China. I had to rebuild my new Itunes on this laptop through loading CDs into the external drive. It worked fine, but just to emphasize the cd/dvd drive still has occasional utility, even in the thumb-drive world of today.

My one true beef is with the touchpad. On my Olympic edition, there was no guide on using the touchpad, and it regularly misreads my finger movements, expanding, contracting, and scrolling when I am just trying to move the pointer. I'm not sure if it is the dry mountain air where I live, or something idiosyncratic about my finger movements, but this is the first time in 5 laptop touchpads I have used regularly, where I have had a problem. I like the shrink-expand two finger function, but not when that isn't what I am trying to do. I haven't bought a mouse #again, defeats the purpose of going small) , but that would eliminate this concern. Haven't seeen this as a concern for others, so this touchpad issue could just be me.

Overall, this laptop has worked so well that I never use my other computers except my work laptop at my office docking station. To be honest, I've started bringing in my Acer to work! If you are looking for a high performing, affordable ultra-portable

This is an excellent product. I love the compact size combined with the great power of a full size laptop. It is so light weight that I can carry it anywhere. I did a great deal of research before I purchased this laptop and it was very difficult to find a laptop this size that was powerful enough to run my applications. Excellent buy!! I highly recommend!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome little notebook, February 10, 2010

Goat Herder "Goat Herder" (Deployed to Middle East) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Acer Aspire Timeline AS1810TZ-4008 11.6-Inch Olympic Edition Laptop (Silver) (Personal Computers)
Finally got my notebook (netbook?) and so far it has been great during the past 2 weeks of operation.
Boots up quickly, decent graphics and the keyboard is easy to use. I was hoping it would play an old game called Beachhead 2002 but it's a little sluggish. But I didn't buy it to play video games and wanted a traveling machine. Was thinking about the 10 inch netbooks but they sounded too small and taking my heavy 17" HP on trips from the Middle East back to the US takes up too much space/weight. Have yet to take it on the road but I think it will do all I need.

I had already purchased the Samsung DVD burner (listed in the ad) in anticipation of getting a smaller notebook and both seem to work well together. Battery life running the burner is yet to be seen but I am impressed with it so far. Of course after running a bigger laptop with shorter life, anything would have longer battery power.

One thing I'm curious about (emailed Acer but no reply) is the Bluetooth indicator and switch on the front. The instructions call out that it is for limited models but I wonder if it's a hardware issue or if software can be added to bring it to life. Currently using the IOGear bluetooth adapter with a BT Microsoft mouse 5000 and it all seems to work very well.

This was a VISA rewards item to myself and as luck would have it, it was sent from Amazon to my Stateside address and then sent over. I still don't understand why Amazon won't ship electronics and some vendors have problems shipping to an APO address but thats just another rant.

Availability of this laptop has been rather limited but I recommend buying this one or similar size unit. It's a great blend of performance and size. Not a speed demon but for a small laptop it's quiet, doesn't heat up (so far)and good performance so I'm glad I was able to get it. The cover design is pretty trick but I guess I was thinking the cover was aluminum as per write ups and the color in photos. Not bad plastic but I was hoping. The inside piece where the mouse is located is aluminum however. I hope this little jewel lasts for a very long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good product, incorrect product listing, December 30, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer Aspire Timeline AS1810TZ-4008 11.6-Inch Olympic Edition Laptop (Silver) (Personal Computers)
Amazon lists this item having an optical drive (DVD), but this is incorrect. The true hardware specs are identical to the ones listed by amazon in all other aspects. The product's performance is as good as expected, and is well built. To sum it up, this product is a good buy in spite of it differing from what is specified in the product listing by the lack of a DVD drive. Hopefully Amazon will correct the listing soon.

I know it is not the wireless network problem because all my other computers link to the network in seconds. But I'm not sure whether it is Window 7 specific. This is my only one running on Window 7 and all others running on Vista or XP.
