5.0 out of 5 stars Great Laptop, July 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820T-5570 14-Inch HD Display Laptop (Black Brushed Aluminum) (Personal Computers)
First, I would just like to compliment Acer on this masterpiece. I say masterpiece in the sense that it is perfect for what I do, which is a lot of excel, downloading files, surfing the internet, checking email, etc. No gaming whatsoever except for a game of solitaire here and there. The build quality is excellent. Having read plenty of reviews about its build quality, I would just like to point out that the professionals reviewing it put it through strenuous tests that if, you use it as it should be used, you will never encounter problems or inconveniences they speak of. This machine is lightning fast with its Intel i3 processor and 4 GB of RAM. It doesn't slow up when I have 6 programs running at the same time either, which is key for me, as it is for many people. One aspect that I love is how light the computer is. It isn't incredibly light, but by no means is it heavy. I expect to have no problems when I put it in my backpack and ride my bike to school. It's that light. The screen is crystal clear, and I have had absolutely no problems viewing text, as some reviews claim. Also, the viewing angles are pretty good, although not stellar, but lets be honest, who views their laptops with it completely opened? No one. So don't worry about viewing angles being a problem if that is your concern. The one downside, if you can even call it a downside, is the battery life. Acer claims 8 hours, although I have only been able to get about 6 out of it. Plenty long enough for me, and if you manage your power settings and brightness correctly, it should be plenty for just about anyone. The black brushed aluminum is very sleek and proves to be a favorite for those who are tech-savvy, and want a sophisticated looking machine(like myself). The price is pretty reasonable for what you get with this laptop-not too many better buys out there. Overall, this is a great computer, and Acer has really outdone themselves. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is in need of a computer for the uses that I have talked about previously.

4.0 out of 5 stars Generally satisfied, September 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820T-5570 14-Inch HD Display Laptop (Black Brushed Aluminum) (Personal Computers)
This is the 4th laptop I have ever used. I had Toshiba, Lenovo T61, Asus before this, and they all have some good points.
I got this product 2 days after the purchase, and the packing was nice and beautiful. I was impressed by how thin this laptop is, however, its length and width are larger than my expectation. The screen is 14", but it has wide edges, so the overall size is bigger than my previous 14" laptop. The smooth plastic inner surface part makes it looks kind of "cheap".
It is not heavy though, actually lighter than the 14" laptop I bought 3 years ago. I guess it is unrealistic for me to expect it to be as light as a netbook.
I love the input/output ports on its side--it has everything I need and doesn't have anything I don't need. It has 4 USB ports, which is great for me. It has HDMI output, which is the main reason why I'chose it. I could connect it to my wide screen TV, and watch movies from the internet. The quality of the transmission for both video and sound was great. My friend said it was really fancy to use it this way.
The program is not running as fast as I have expected. Although it is similar, or maybe faster than my dual core-lenovo T61, I thought technology should have developed a lot after 3 years. My lenovo had some systematic problems though--the soundMAX is always inactivated, so there is no sound unless I restart it over and over again; and I couldn't successfully backup or restore. I haven't seen any similar problem in this Acer machine. The software for backup and restore was easy to use, and ran pretty smooth.
This product is the quietest laptop I've ever used. I cannot even hear the sound from the cooling fan. And it has never gotten too warm.
As other comments have pointed out, the 8 hours battery life may only last for 5 hours if you're really using it. But it is not bad either considering the thickness.
All in all, this is a compact, well-designed laptop pretty much worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great student laptop., August 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820T-5570 14-Inch HD Display Laptop (Black Brushed Aluminum) (Personal Computers)
This is my first Acer product that I have ever purchased. I've been using HP computers for the past 5 years. Although they have great products, I thought it was time for a change, and it turns out it was a turn for the better.

The screen is amazingly clear. 14" is just the right size for any student usage (Word, Internet, etc.) and great for video watching.

Keyboard feels nice. Its soft but still has a firm hold to it.

Webcam is alright. Not too bad for a 1.3 MP camera

This laptop really is light. I hope to have no problems when carrying it in my backpack.

With 4GB RAM, this is one fast machine.

I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a light laptop that still packs a fast punch.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Great!, September 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820T-5570 14-Inch HD Display Laptop (Black Brushed Aluminum) (Personal Computers)
I've had this notebook for a little under a month and i've used it everyday since. The notebook is thin and it is pretty sturdy; however, the monitor seems a bit flimsy. It is fast and can multi-task pretty well. For example I like to run itunes, mozilla firefox, and microsoft word at the same time, and my notebook doesn't slow down. I will say though because of my crazy multi-tasking needs my battery life gets cut down to 3 to 4 hours. Which is still quite a long time considering i'm using three processing hungry program.

I'm a college student so i do carry it in my backpack, and i do notice a little extra weight on my backpack, but it's lighter than my heavy textbooks.

i love the HDMI it works great on my tv, the usb ports are great although, i haven't found a use for all 4 of them nevertheless it's a great thing to have.

THE BIGGEST CON EVER: The multitouch touchpad is terrible! sometimes it can be unresponsive to most of my "multitouch" gestures. So i pretty much stopped using it, and anyways i don't need it! I can still scroll down fast with the scroll down bar on the side of the touchpad. I think the main reason i was disappointed with the touchpad is because i was so used to the macbook's touchpad(which is so awesome).

In the end i love this laptop it does everything i need and more

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised!, September 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820T-5570 14-Inch HD Display Laptop (Black Brushed Aluminum) (Personal Computers)
Whenever I buy an electronic device, I often try to find as many reviews from both professional reviewers and customers alike. Unfortunately, I could not find many reviews on the Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820T-5570. There were only a few customer reviews scattered throughout the internet, all of which said that this was a great laptop. I was frantically trying to find at least one person who disliked something about the laptop because I'm a very critical person in terms of the technology I'm going to use for both work and my grad courses. However, I finally found a more professional review through ComputerTV's channel on YouTube. Even so, the Tiger Direct reviewer for ComputerTV had little to say in terms of really bashing the laptop at all.

In the end, I will have to agree with the majority on this laptop. It's a great balance between price and performance in a lightweight, compact design. What most reviewers don't point out is the Dolby virtual surround sound the laptop produces. The sound is flat-out amazing for such a slender notebook. In terms of sound, it's only lacking in the deep bass range which is to be expected since adding a sub-woofer to this laptop would only create bulk. In terms of overall design, I couldn't be happier. One of the things I love the most is the ample amount of vents to cool the laptop: there is a dominant left side vent as well as 2 front vents and some scattered vents underneath the unit. The feel of the keyboard is excellent as well, rivals that of the Sony EA24FM/W (yes, I tried out the feel of laptops at my local retail electronic stores) which was lauded by CNET to have the best feel of any laptop. The Acer TimelineX 4820T does take a bit from the design of a Sony in terms of feel and even has a similarly designed charger that reduces torque on the cord. In terms of looks, the TimelineX takes from Asus with the monochrome brushed aluminum. This laptop is only a tad bit of a fingerprint magnet in the few shiny areas around the edges of the keyboard and around the screen. In time, it may even be a fingerprint magnet around the back of the screen as well (but that's hardly an issue). There is a little bit of bloatware in the 60-day trial in both Microsoft Office 2007 and McAfee antivirus. However, that too is not much of an issue since they're easily uninstalled and replaced with my full version of MS office 2010 and my ISP provided Norton.

CNET 2010 editor's choice for back to school laptops was the Toshiba Portege R705-P25 which I found to be too small for my taste and the fact that the keys felt cheap and loose as I typed on them. As much as I love the TimelineX's keyboard and feel, the arrow keys are a tad bit small. Sony's EA24FM/W was a bust for me because although it had excellent keyboard feel, the battery out of the box wasn't up to snuff. Although it packs a blue-ray player, I'm not up for an entertainment laptop that runs out of battery life. When I buy a portable device, it has to be as portable as it can be. The TimelineX 4820T was the best fit for me, and I was pleasantly surprised.

4.0 out of 5 stars very solid laptop, November 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820T-5570 14-Inch HD Display Laptop (Black Brushed Aluminum) (Personal Computers)
I purchased this laptop as a desktop replacement and am overall very satisfied. Perfect size/weight/performance combination with a battery that regularly gets 6+ hours of usage. Include an optical bay drive and this baby has everything you need for day to day computing.

There are a couple minor "issues" though, the first is that the outside laptop cover attracts a lot of fingerprints and stains. Secondly, there are no external volume controls (again not major, but should have been included in this price range.) Third the LCD screen seems a little flimsly and might break over time. And lastly (this might be Windows) the laptop will regularly freeze up when turning the screen back on from standby.

Though I wrote more negatives than positives, I still highly suggest this laptop for anyone in the market!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted, November 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820T-5570 14-Inch HD Display Laptop (Black Brushed Aluminum) (Personal Computers)
I'm a college student, and have had the laptop for about eight weeks. My HP laptop died and I needed to replace it. I wanted a laptop that was light so that I could carry it around campus, with a good battery life so that I wouldn't have to bring the cord along. I wanted it to have a good sized hard drive so I could use it to keep all my photos.

It turns out this laptop is just what I wanted and more. The 14" screen is still big enough for me to be able to use the side-by-side feature available with Windows 7, it is clear and bright and has a great picture. It's a little more reflective than I'd ideally want but all laptops I've seen are. One of the things I really love though is it has never once gotten hot, and the fan is still extremely quiet. The speakers are also very nice for the size of the computer. I have used the computer to play background music for a gathering of people. It definitely isn't going to provide what you want for a huge noisy party, but this is a little computer, not meant for that.

It is very light, so it's really easy to take along. It advertises an 8 hour battery and it certainly is quite long. I've never tested it for a full eight hours but pretty close. There are of course some restrictions. The longest battery life I experienced was with the lowest screen brightness and only using Microsoft Word and surfing the internet.

I don't do a lot of gaming, but I do occasionally play The Sims 3, and the computer had no problem running it. I also frequently have over a dozen internet browsers and a bunch of Word documents and PDF files open. It never freezes or slows down in any way.

As for software - it only came with a little bit of bloatware, not a problem at all. Acer also included though a program you can use to do back-up to an external harddrive. It didn't come with any back-up CD's but that's standard now. You can burn your own if you have four DVD's.

I would suggest this product

I have used Dell computers, Gateway computers, Macbook Pro, HP computers, and all have good points and weak points. What makes me happy about the Acer Aspire Timeline X I purchased is that it is everything that was advertised: compact, fast, great thin screen, long battery life. The speakers are dynamic and bright, but small (small speakers just can't give big sound). I have a Dell 17" that has great speakers, but it feels like it weighs twice as much as my Aspire. Internet reception on my Aspire is great! I am very happy with my purchase, and impressed with my Acer Aspire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Laptop and solid performance, December 8, 2010
This review is from: Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820T-5570 14-Inch HD Display Laptop (Black Brushed Aluminum) (Personal Computers)
I bought this laptop at Circuit City.com for only $550 on black friday. I love this computer because it is so light and thing. The black brushed aluminum cover is great too. For those who want long battery life and great performance (intel core I3), this is it! Also it comes with Built-in Bluetooth which i like a lot. It took me a while to find the device on this laptop and the support was no help at all.

This is how you can activate the bluetooth device on this laptop,

Toggle the FN key and F3(w/wireless symbol on it). It will have a pop up screen showing wireless and bluetooth devices with ON/OFF function. All you need to do is switch it on and you will activate the bluetooth.
