I don't know what other people are talking about. I use this monitor to play games with on my PC. It is certainly useful in more than just reading Word Documents. Bright ? what do people mean when they say a TV monitor is not bright enough ? If it isn't turn up the brightness...LOL.. And it certainly isn't "Cheap" feeling.
IT ISN'T a Widescreen...DUH, so don't complain about it not being one or compare it to a widescreen.
AND it ISN'T a LED BACKLIT Monitor !! All this you know BEFORE you buy it. It's a basic decent 17 inch monitor. My movies look great on it but that is a partial function of my video card too.
I have a top notch Video card and PC and I have found this to be a superb little monitor, but I am going to a larger screen soon, although I'm not crazy about widescreens.
At any rate before you go judging this monitor, think about the rest of your system first. It will certainly bring out the flaws in your integrated video chipsets and inexpensive PCs, but at 17 inches it just doesn't cut it anymore even for "Word Documents".
IF you are still using a 15 inch or even 17 inch CRT it is a nice upgrade for a good price. I have had very good luck with ACER products over the years.
But keep in mind people what something is BEFORE you buy it..:-) Don't buy a Prius and then complain it's not as fast as a Porsche.

Monitors have gotten too large and wide for my tastes. I found this the finest monitor I've tested in this price range that fits nicely on a table that does not need to be more than three feet away to take it all in. I waited three months after buying this to post this review so I've kicked it around awhile. NO dead pixels, 250 nits is plenty of brightness because there are contrast and cool/hot brightness settings that suit any tastes! I just hope they keep making this winner and don't change anything if and when I need a second or third one. Nice job Acer!

Opened the box, plugged in cords, snapped monitor into base (from pictograph directions printed on box), turned it on and voila! Only resolution to be changed (easily on a Mac OS 10.6.4, under System Preferences - Monitors). So clear, so easy. No need for enclosed cd and printed manual (yet).
4 stars because monitor does not tilt (product specs didn't say it would) but my last ones (Samsung, ViewSonic) did. I don't yet know about product lifespan.

This is a great size for reading Word Documents...most of the screens are wide-screen now. But also most good screens are backlit and have better quality. I got an LG screen (widescreen) that had five times the quality and appeal of this for about $20 more. This has a very flimsy feel to it, but was a good replacement for the tiny screens that came with my Dell computer (although they seemed a lot sturdier). It's not as bright as a backlit computer and probably wouldn't be good for watching TV over the computer...but for writing Word Documents, it's the right height and width.

Does NOT have a flimsy feel. I agree with previous reviewer that says if you need it brighter then turn up the brightness. There is an easy to use front panel control for that. Not much to say about it. If you are looking for a good 17" lcd monitor at an excellent price,then buy this one. If you want something else like a widescreen then buy that instead.

I have an older HP (2005) that is still kicking. The integrated video card does not support wide-screen format, and I wanted to find a flat-panel monitor for my kids to work with. Acer's V173 17-inch LCD was the perfect solution. It's very difficult to locate monitors of this ratio anymore. I usually buy Viewsonic widescreens for my work machines, and have never before purchased Acer product. I was not very hopeful that I'd get anything other than an OK-quality monitor. I was thrilled with the color quality, so much that I'm thinking the kids can wait for Daddy to get another widescreen for his 2nd monitor at home. The Acer's mine for now. They can endure a few more months of CRT space hog.

This unit replaced a broken display on a server with limited space. It worked great and we just pluged it in. Nothing fancy just reliable replacement.

I am very pleased with the Acer Monitor. Price was excellent, size and weight so much lighter as compared to older monitors. I should have replaced my old one sooner.

Perfect new computer monitor for my needs. Larger, clearer, brighter.....exactly what I wanted. Came in quick time and perfect condition. Thanks so much!

I now have this same monitor on both computers. One is over a year old and has not had any problems. Highly recommend!
